A highly underrated mod, thank you very much, Sir. The point is, there are so many bugs and bad decisions in this game, that you become used to it, a crackling sound in Arc Jet isn't the worst thing that can happen. I had this for years, but this time around I shut the game down in Arc Jet to find the problem. And your mod was the solution.
I maybe had a not too dissimilar issue without any sound mod or VR, which may be worth noting if it helps others, albeit I'm on Windows 7... When I started playing FO4 I had a small but annoying noise in home plate that I can only describe as white crackle/static. After trying game & software solves, connections & hardware, I felt my monitor's built-in speakers were to blame except I couldn't replicate it outside of FO4.
I later found a pc audio site's comment suggesting changing gpu cable type. I'd already changed my DVI and audio cables, but now switched to HDMI - and it fixed it. Not sure if it was monitor or pc, or just the way the game's audio is designed or interpreted via realtek in Win7.
HDMI has a digital sound channel and most modern hardware (GPU, Screen) supports it. DVI doesn't have this digital channel for sound and relies on the usually green colored analog 3.5mm jack to convey sound.
Digital transmission is mostly unaffected by noise and hum, as you can hear =)
Thanks niston, yes I was aware, but you're right to make explicit mention of it. What flummoxed me was being unable to replicate it outside FO4 - other games (FO3, M2TW etc), music and internet etc all unaffected - seems not a case of simply blaming analogue. And I wanted to mention it in case another poor soul was in the same situation and scanning nexus regards audio distortion.
