Description:
Vanilla Fallout 4 has a notorious issue where NPCs can spontaneously have their faces turn "rusty"/brown.  This isn't caused because of face texture resolution incompatibilities like what popular opinion says (though having mismatched face texture resolutions WILL cause a permanent rusty/brown face until you fix your load order, but that is a separate issue).

This is an engine level issue, most likely caused by heavy script load and the game fails to properly apply the correct texture onto the faces.
It can be noticed very  frequently on loading into a save, or entering into a heavy settlement.

What's in this mod:

The original Rusty Face Fix used a cloaking effect on cell load that affected all NPCs around you and swapped their head parts.  This was not only inefficient due to the nature of how cloaking works (this is why SPID has gained popularity in the Skyrim modding scene) and could potentially cause crashes upon loading into a cell due to the amount of script load, but the player had no control when the fix was being applied.  It would only occur on cell loads, so if you had a rusty face you wanted to fix, you were forced to reload your save/game, which is just tedious.

The redux 2022 version utilizes a more efficient way of resetting the face, and utilizes AAF's f4se libraries to allow a hot-key driven way of applying the fix whenever you have a NPC in your crosshair.  It also provides another method to avoid the vertice explosion effect on NPCs wearing vanilla clothes with physics.

Features:

This mod via MCM allows you configure two hotkeys:
RustyHotKey : refreshes the NPC to fix the rusty face.

RustyUnequipHotKey: This refreshes the NPC but unequips the main chest armor and re-equips afterwards, to prevent the vertices physics explosion effect that happens on NPCs who wear outfits with cloth physics (Preston Garvey, Hancock). Yes, there will be a brief period where the NPC is naked.

Configure the hotkeys, and when your crosshair is over a NPC, hit the key. You should get a notification that the fix was applied.

FAQ:

What about the player character?
This is now supported via an additional hotkey

Is this ESL-flagged?
Yes.

Why does it require AAF?
Re-read the description as I did mention the reason, but for those with poor reading comprehension, I need it for the NPC crosshair functionality.

Help! I'm still getting the rusty face after applying the hotkey?!
You have an improper face texture setup, where differing textures at different resolutions.
