When the Resource Wars first broke out in 2052, the United States were flooded with refugees from the European Commonwealth. Culture and language barriers threatened to exacerbate social unrest; the government was already considering setting up camps and ghettos, as well as leaving any newcomers to drown in the Atlantic. It was RobCo, then a rising star of a company, that solved the problem by introducing a device called the Traductron™.

Although based on advanced real-time processing technology that would later integrate the General Atomics Mr. Handy line, as well as the V.A.T.S.
, the Traductron™ was simple enough to mass produce and sell for as cheap as a new telephone. It seamlessly translated speech from a variety of languages (notably NOT including Mandarin) into English text, and vice-versa; it was also pocket-sized, allowing citizens to carry it everywhere they went.

RobCo, of course, reserved the rights to remotely store all processed data and share it with its strategic partners, including, but not limited to, Vault-Tec, the Nuka-Cola Corporation, the West Tek Corporation, the State Department, the Department of Defense, and federal and local law enforcement agencies.

Despite two centuries of wear and tear in wasteland conditions, RobCo Traductrons have proved surprisingly resilient; most units still function even today. In addition, prospectors soon discovered it's easy enough to salvage a working translation module from any RobCo terminal - including any version of the Pip-Boy - and make it work as a Traductron, missing only the sleek factory casing.


This mod does not add the Traductron as an item; instead, it makes the Commonwealth more linguistically diverse by changing the voices of various characters using the game's own language packs. Subtitles and text are entirely unaltered, allowing you to keep the game in English (or another game language, just change the termination on the ba2). The .esp is light and has no record changes, meaning it's fully compatible with any mod that doesn't alter or add voice lines to existing characters.

Language lover or not, with this mod, you will experience a more varied, deeper Commonwealth - the different languages reinforce faction identities, and also help disguise the fact the game often reuses voice actors as a matter of necessity. In fact, in my opinion, several dub actors actually give a noticeably better performance than their English counterparts!

This is how I managed distribution:

  • Spanish: Spoken by the Brotherhood of Steel, which, as well as having a "Catholic" approach to their doctrine, are based on historical holy orders such as the Order of St. James and the Knights of Calatrava, both quartered in Spain. Furthermore, they come from the Capital Wasteland, which has a significant Hispanic population in real life. Also spoken by Arturo Rodriguez, his daughter, and some important characters from two DLCs.
  • French: Spoken by the Railroad, which are very reminiscent of the French Resistance. As well as fighting the Nazi occupation, the Resistance helped smuggle out Allied soldiers from behind enemy lines. And Desdemona and Deacon have amazing French voice actors. Also spoken by (guess who!) Curie.
  • German: Spoken by Institute scientists, except for Father and Madison Li. All non-covert synths, including Coursers, retain their English voice acting. In the real life 1950s, the US scientific community was full of German scientists brought in by Operation Paperclip; it was also during this time that the "evil German scientist" trope concretized in cinema. Also spoken by Phyllis Daily, the woman convinced she's a synth.
  • Italian: Spoken by the Triggermen, including Darla (she's a quick learner!). I don't believe any explanation is required. Also spoken by the Goodneighbor guards and Fahrenheit, but not Hancock.
  • Japanese: This was a tricky one. The Japanese translation, for some reason, runs in an outdated version of the game, so it was a bit harder to work with; and I couldn't identify any real "weeb" faction in the game that I could justify speaking Japanese. So at the moment it's only spoken by Marcy and Jun Long and Doctor Sun. But do leave suggestions in the comments!

There might be a couple of NPCs I forgot to mention or to change, but overall that's the mod.

Might require Nuka World, Automatron and Vault-Tec Workshop, as it includes voice files for these DLCs; I have no idea if it will run without them. Also probably requires playing with subtitles, unless you can understand 6 languages.

Credits for the inspiration go to Language Lover by ImmortalForeverNow, which changes Nate and Nora's voices. The 'Ventilabo NPC Mixup' included in their misc files can be considered a lite version of this mod.
