Interestingly, thick skinned creatures would be the most likely thing to have subsurface scattering applied. Their skin would actually absorb and scatter light due to the fact that sunlight is only reflected when a skin has a coating and the effect would be more apparent on a natural armor such as chitin or in the case of deathclaws' body plates.
Which is frankly a bizarre decision. There seem to be so many cool ideas and plans that were either trimmed or left functional yet disabled in the Fallout 4 release.
It makes me wonder if there are other such settings in the material files that could improve the models as well.
