If your using a custom mod like More Feral Ghouls or anything that adds a new creature, your going to have to open the mod in FO4Edit and manually check the box "can't open doors". It's actually quite easy and doesn't take that long to do and it doesn't mess up your game. In fact, you could use this mod as a patch for other creature mods too.
A curiosity around compatibility. I notice the mod touches a number of forms that don't seem to have any changes on them, a cell around V81 and the mongrel NPCs. Is that necessary or is it just a matter of flagging the race form for "can't open doors". That's what a number of other races have already.
I don't know why you would have such an issue. I updated it within the first month I posted it. Since then, this has been untouched. Also, there is nothing preventing a potential overwrite. It's a simple esp. What is a plus plugin?
Why wouldn't/couldn't they? Ok, molerats might not be that smart, I could agree with that point, but Dogmeat is a trained animal, he's not your ordinary German Shepperd dog out of the blue, he has an interesting backstory in this game. He's quite intelligent, showing in the BoS storyline (talking about THAT scene on the Prydwen), so I find his ability to open doors quite ok-ish. At least believable in the Fallout world. Also for a bunch of pixels and lines of code in a videogame, the dog is damn cute. XD And ghouls, even the feral ones, are still remnants of former humans, beings with their brain capacity to some extend capable of doing things. Just because they rot inside, doesn't mean they lost every brain cell, every instinct, or every ability, they've possessed in their previous life. We still don't know to what extend they are rotten/unable of doing things. Assuming they CAN'T open doors, just because they lost the ability to speak and to think clearly, seems to be just wrong. This is not a rant or a complaining, just some ideas to consider. There's still some unknown in the game and the range of abilities of feral ghouls and trained animals might be part of that.
Has anyone fully verified, has solid evidence that animals need to open doors? I see these claims every time some one makes a mod like this, but never find any evidence of it in my game.
Isn't Ashes already out past the elevator when you enter vault 81? Been while since I did this quest/been to V81, so could be wrong. I think the cat is out of the bag, err past any doors.
I've used a mod like this some time ago and had an issue when Dogmeat is following the scent trail from Diamond City. The quest fails to progress as Dogmeat is unable to exit Diamond City as he needs to "activate" the transition from the city to the entrance. However, temporarily disabling the mod solved the issue. I would assume any similar occurrences would have the same issue, but could be resolved in the same way.
Now if only someone could stop Dogmeat running in the way of your line of fire, running into minefields, triggering sensors, etc etc etc! Or acting as a mobile barrier - he loves to just wedge himself when you are trying to sneak, and refuses to budge out of the way!
I use Amazing Follower Tweaks which has an option to disable the "range ahead" and takes care of that pretty well. Normally, Dogmeat just runs in any direction you start moving.

It cannot be overwrite.
It is not a big problem, however it is adding a plus plugin.

it's realistic until you try to zone into an interior cell. then it's woefully annoying.

"But this is a game not real life!" You say.
Yea, yea, heard that old one.
