This is my first time editing shader code/config, so let's celebrate with a big party at the super secret feral ghoul strip club, The Gnaw!!!
Goal: To be serious for a moment, the aim of this DoF effect is to provide a performance friendly, HUD friendly, subtle cinematic (Bokeh effect, plus subtle film grain applied to the blurred areas) DoF to the game, and can be toggled on or off in-game by pressing F10.
Performance: The effect was tuned to the game's ultra settings on 1080p, and with RenVision ReShade Configuration installed. I run an average FPS of 55 with RenVision+Alt DoF (the inner city and huge settlements I've built tend to hurt my average FPS) on my 3-year-old rig. CPU: 3rd gen quad core i7-3770 up to 3.9GHz, GPU: Gigabyte Over Clocked Edition 4GB GTX 770, and 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM @1,866MHz, if you were curious.
General Technique: I've tweaked the settings to keep anything between the camera and focal plain fairly focused, and anything past the focal plane will get dramatically more blurred depending how close the focal plane is to the camera. I love DoF for screenshots, but many DoF wipe out the foreground subjects if the focus (center of the screen) is on something else. This is maddening for those of us who generally follow the Rule of Thirds when taking screenshots, as our subject is rarely going to be centered. Bright lights and reflective surfaces past the focal plane will have hexagonal Bokeh distortions to match the lens flare RenVision uses. Areas that are blurred will receive subtle film grain, and will be more pronounced the greater the blur. The look is reminiscent to the cameras used in Star Trek: TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. Classic 1990's TV. :)
Compatibility: Compatibility with other ReShade presets shouldn't be an issue so long as you have them installed properly. No guarantees on how it'll look with other ReShade presets, though. This only changes the McFX.cfg (ReShade DoF, and a couple other post effects) file in the ReShade folder, and touches nothing else.
Passive Disclaimer: This was created for my own personal use, but I'm so pleased with the result, I thought I'd share. :) Keep in mind this is a stylized effect. I will not care about any critics who say it doesn't look real. That's the point; it's cinematic. View the readme for more info.
