Before Installation
Scrap Everything in the Settlement, either with a scrapping mod or manually.
After Installation
If the power doesn't work just place a new generator anywhere you wish. The original generator is located at the main entrance.
You may need to manually disable some shrubbery and trees that encroach or go through the wall that scrap everything doesn't delete.
