Version 1.1 is published. New texture set that looks better imo. Now comes in 2 versions: Retexture only and Retexture plus mirrored stock mesh for right handed animations. Open for criticism.
As a carpenter, wood only looks that 'fresh & nice' when it is pristine, and unhandled/weathered. You can build a gun to look like this, but it won't look like this after only a few weeks of use. If this is supposed to be well over 300 years old, it would have to be a 'unique' that was kept in an air-tight display case since the day it was made (which is fine).
And if we are going with the "why is he even bothering to comment" thing, consider this more along the lines of 'helpful feedback' (hopefully), because I do quite a bit of retextures myself, and have done similar, and have seen similar in other people's mods. Now, I know not everyone is an Immersion-Natsi, and thats fine as well. Its just that after playing this game for 6 years, I have downloaded so many mods I thought were 'kewl' at first, and after a very short time I felt didn't belong (no knock on the work - its usually amazing - its just hard to come up with plausible backstories for why these things would exist so long after an apocalypse).
You could possibly play with the Normal and Specular maps to give the 'grain' some more depth and shading, so it 'pops' more. (hopefully more of that 'helpful' critique... YMMV). Cheers
wood for a gun is usually sanded down and varnished, it doesn't have cravises like it's the bark of a tree. even when the gun would be used for a longer period, the wood would be smooth, maybe dirty, yes, but smooth. All i'm saying is that the normal map is quite bad here, and the gloss...and the specular, and the diffuse..
@MarkusTay No no, I get it. It would look worn after some years. Maybe some cracks in the wood here and there, not as shiny, more profile. I personally don't want to make a totally worn and cracked up wooden stock texture. Since the wooden stock in the referenced mod is crafted new, and not found in the world, I feel like the wood would be somewhat new-ish. As new as it could get in the apocalypse. I think it would be good to make a new version with a different texture setup. Thanks for the criticism. Always great to hear from people who know a thing or two about this. @Marcurios Lmao so everything is bad ^^ I do agree though. Out of my selfmade textures this really isn't the best pick in retrospect.
I'll see if I can make a better and new version for this.
If anyone needs the mirrored stock mesh due to the right handed animation replacers (I personally use Hitman's hunting rifle anim replacer) I can easily make it happen
