About this mod

Bringing proper ART to Boston celebrating actual Bostonian things like Thomas Paine, the Tea Party, New England architecture, Baseball, Terriers and Stranglers!

Let me tell you something: I used to deal art. And by that I mean, I'm a reformed burglar. These days I mod, and some say I'm also an artist, but people will say that to anyone these days who has a longstanding interest in making pictures, playing songs and writing prose.

Point is, I like art. Good art. No more Johnny Fingerpaints, we're getting visually interesting stuff that has a purpose beyond snobs asking "But what does it truly mean?"

I'll tell you what it means, it means you're phoning it in, that's what it means.

Art should be about evoking something real, and interesting, and thought provoking. It should make you feel something. Abstract art can obviously do that, but Bethesda's selection is bland at best, half the time I don't even notice it hanging on the walls.

So instead we got stuff like Fenway Park, Boston Fire Department, Dogs Playing Poker, Harbours, the Molasses Flood (true story), the great fire, and Irish-American stuff. I also included HP Lovecraft since meh, it's New England, close enough.

And on top of that, there's now twice as many generic paintings as there was before! The ones in the screenshots is just a preview, there are lots more to find on your own in the game.

On top of that, we also have all kinds of other things because of how ridiculously many paintings there are in the game, including general American things, like Old West paintings, WW2 paintings, American Indians and my favorite: Paintings of ordinary people living their lives, captured in a way as to be thought provoking, interesting and admiring of the spirit of the common citizen.

The mod itself is easy enough to install: Just drag and drop into data and you got yourself some art. Art about history, science, culture and literature, art that took a bit of effort and wasn't just some CIA scheme to culturally dilute the social realist movement.
(Yeah that's right I said it! And if you hassle me in the comments about it then I will recommend you book titles on the subject, you have been warned.)

FAQ:

A: How does this mod work?
Q: It is a simple texture replacer, just drag and drop.

A: Is it true that you removed the cats?!
Q: Yes, but I added new ones, you can find them in optional files.

A: What kind of art can I expect from this mod?
Q: I'd say popular art, not to be mistaken for pop art (although pop art is popular art for sure). Which is to say, stuff that is generally enjoyed by ordinary people as opposed to high street art critics and collectors. Some might be a bit amusing, some might be a bit interesting, some might evoke thoughts and ideas and discussions. The kind of art you'd see on the street corner as opposed to the gallery, so to speak. In fact I wrote an article about my own thoughts on art at Medium, where you can learn more about my take on the matter.

A: Does it have a performance impact?
Q: Not at all, in fact, I suspect it might increase performance due to how I use a better file compression format.

A: Is this mod lore friendly?
Q: Yes, barring one easter egg. But that has been established by Bethesda convention as perfectly fine.

A: Will there be updates or added content in the future?
Q: I sure hope so, but I don't want to force it. These art items are based on my own study and interest in art over the years, and I have picked my favorites. I don't just want to gather up random paintings for the sake of more content, I want it to be stuff that I think compliments the game world and setting well.

A: This is a Thumblesteen FAQ... where is our happy little song?
Q: I am afraid I am no longer making happy little songs for the FAQs... so I guess you will have to make due with HAPPY LONG SONG!
