Marie doesn't mean "Star of the Sea", that's Baby Names book/internet bullcrap. It's just the French form of Mary. In French, star of the sea is "étoile de la mer". The linkage is from Virgin Mary also being called "Our Lady, the Star of the Sea", but that's a title, not her name's meaning.
Marie, Mary and Maria all come from the same Latin translation of the original Biblical name Maryam (in Aramaic) and Miriam (in Hebrew). The meaning of the name is argued over, often interpreted as beloved (or bitter, or rebel - that's to do with Moses' sister Miriam's character/life).
One of the best characters in the game. It is kind of devastating that they did not even try to make more Far Harbor characters into companions, especially The Mariner.
Yeah, by the time you go to Far Harbor, you are potentially either the smartest scientist/doctor ever, or at least are in charge of them, through running the institute, being general of the minutemen (with many pre-war ghouls, robot medical experts etc) and of course, Curie and the Cabots.
You can't do it in the DLC because .... they didn't want to pay the money for the voice lines, I would say. There's no logical reason you can't cure her, or Shaun for that matter, and someone else did a mod exploring exactly that.
Meh, she ends the game still alive, which is better than either of the cut content's options - which is probably why they're cut content! I don't know why so many gamers keep seeing cut content like they're finding crucial long lost Gospels of the Bible. Fact is they aren't even lore, they're just drafts that didn't make the story's final edit. Sure, sometimes it'll be because they ran out of time or budget, but often it will be because they're dumb, broken, lore breaking, or cause some other issue - practical or logical, or plot. Her disease may be incurable and painful and eventually killing her, but obviously it isn't doing her in that quick. My elderly mother has multiple incurable diseases (lung and rheumatoid), been living with them for 4 decades, slowly getting worse, but managed.
As for Father, the purpose is to show you that not everything is curable, kiddo, not everything can be fixed. It's a serious plot line and legit ending for him. Don't know why folk want to mess with it in a trashy "nobody gets left behind" Disney children's makeover.
As I was nearing the end of the questline and learnt of the Mariner's condition, I wanted to invite her to an adventure in the Commonwealth for an unforgettable experience before the unavoidable Long Walk. This mod made my day, before typing "mariner" in the Search Box I was convinced that I won't get any results. Great work! Endorsed!

It's great to have the star of the sea traveling with me. Endorsed.
How about you can save her with a Mysterious Serum (Lorenzo Cabot's blood)?
