As this is a skinned weapon it doesn't work well with Classic Holstered Weapons. If you have CHW enabled you will most likely get a CTD (possibly at the workbench) if you do not exclude it.
From Reisstc: You can keep CHW active if you add "ExcludedWeaponFormId_Crossbow=Crossbow.esp|F9C" to the bottom of ClassicHolsteredWeaponsConfig.ini without quotes.

Does anybody know how to remove the crossbow from the leveled list? Almost all gunners in my playthrough now have or use crossbow. They should change their faction from Gunners to Crossbowmen.
Also anybody knows how to switch bolts? I try pressing the reload button twice and there's a confirmation about changing bolts but I'm still using the same field bolt. I have several explosive and storm bolts in my inventory.
I'm no expert but you can go in FO4Edit, look for the tab QUEST in your loaded crossbow.esp and exclude the entries you want there. Gotta look for the entries. I believe you could exclude QUEST too if you like without any major bugs, it would exclude the crossbow completely from the leveled lists.
Why is the crossbow going into weird level lists, BOS / Gunners and such, surely a crossbow would be suited on low/mid raiders/scavengers not organized military groups
You may just need to change the file name for one or the other. I have a merged mod with the old crossbows of the commonwealth, and am using this mod, which tbh I'd recommend you pick one but you CAN technically use both.
