Howdy, all. I've noticed a large group saying how the .223 ammunition and 5.56 NATO ammo from the vanilla game are generally the same thing. While I agree with those individuals, I just want to leave a remark saying that this serves only a lore-friendly aspect of the game, as both the Light Support Weapon and the .223 Pistol both share the same .223 ammunition in Fallout 2.
That being said, Scail does currently have a weapon on his LSW page called the "Army Support Weapon" which is currently calibered with conventional 5.56mm.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a .223 weapon that can't handle the increased pressure. Especially because firearm manufacturers know that many people make hand loads which can have increased pressure as well.
If anything, firing .223 Remington in a 5.56 NATO semi automatic/automatic rifle would be worse due to there not being enough pressure to complete the action.
Well that's mostly true, 5.56 can be fired out of some .223 firearms. They are almost the same except 5.56 has more pressure. You can fire .223 out of a 5.56 upper receiver and vise versa (at least for AR-15s). There are very minor differences but the extent of which is so small that it should be fine using either.
.223 is very similar to 5.56 with the main distinguishing feature being pressure differences
the main differences in terms of guns firing them come down to the rifling of the barrel and the pressures of both rounds barrel instances being a barely meaningful decrease in accuracy ive noticed when putting standard .223s through my m16a1, something caused by the rifling twist of the barrel
but yes gun platforms meant for .223 or 5.56 are going to get a very loud and flashy surprise when you sneak .300 blackout in some guys stanag magazine at the range
and this pistol is still going to be a ridiculously loud flashbang to anyone unfortunate enough to get shot at with it
Recently the Light Support Weapon mod has updated and changed the .esm file name to AdditonalAmmoTypes.esm. This mod will need an update if it is going to work.
.223 Remington is just a civilian load of a 5.56 NATO. They're virtually identical in size and proportions. The only major difference would be powder variations. A .223 designed weapon might not be capable of withstanding the increased pressure from a 5.56 NATO. But that's highly unlikely due to the number of powder variations within the .223 family and hand loads alone.
Hey, Slaughters! Though I definitely get where you're going, the main aspect of this mod is to bridge two separate mods together by lore factors. For instance, the .223 LSW and the AK-112 Assault Rifle were both introduced in Fallout 2. The two weapons were base loaded with distinctive ammunition which, while complicating gameplay with ammunition specifics, allowed the player to utilize their stocked pistol ammo on greater weapons. Here, I wanted to implement the same idea by sharing the LSW's signature ammo to a different gun.
But I do find your point about the two ammo types having similarities very interesting! I'm guessing that's why Bethesda decided to scrap that kind of ammo for their future games!
