3/28/24: Appears this works in the 6.0+ series of Reshade! I had to change processor edit to change the "Reverse" line item to 1, but it works just fine.

I wouldnt mind a hand getting this to work.

Ive just installed Reshade 6.1 and then this afterwards. It was selectable at the top and Haze is also ticked in the list but im not seeing the effect in game at all.

I have a feeling the issue might be the same as MisterKen's above but im not experienced with Reshade so how do you change processor edit/ ergo reverse line to 1?

    Thanks.

Thanks bud. I got 73 active plugins so far (mostly yours from desert list) and games loading up and running fine. Not using all of yours as some i had LO issues with surprisingly, or just didnt feel them but it will still be a full FNV game due to your work, so thankyou :) I decided on balance not to use a 'Needs' mod at the moment though F76 looked impressive, from experience it can create a lot of additional stresses/headaches and i must have 2000+ hours logged in F4 anyway, so this is just about trying to relax. I hope i can get Shimmer to work. I keep getting my ass kicked by your heat punishment mod, i wondered why my heart kept thumping when i was focused on testing till i remembered its a constant health drain lol. She's in a bikini currently and i dont think theres any stores selling sun bloc [though i have scarved up for them sandstorms] so she's probably snafue'd LOL.

I am surprised being that your desert orientated that Nightstrikers werent in your list but ive installed them:

      https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/23004

Thanks for the continuing efforts to help as and when folks like me need it. Respect.

PS- Im trying to find a sweaty body overlay which seems appropriate for your desert setting but the only one ive seen so far is no good, its OTT characters look melted (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/675/)

      Can you recommend any?

I thought i had something. if its working the start menu also is shimmering and hard to read right?

But i lost it again, and clearly something was not quite right because the trees were lined with what looked like black blobs flowing up the sides of them, i know what a heat haze is meant to be clear, so something might be off with it unless you tell me thats how it is. i reset the values, but not sure if its right. Can you please look at the attached thumbnail and tell me if this is what im meant to be seeing because i have a heat haze but the sides of the trees have jagged black flowing up them etc but theres defintaly a heat haze it just doesnt look right..

Also is it supposed to effect all the in game menus because for example i cant see anything in the chemistry station i just tried because its all effected by a heat haze, that cant be right surely? Page Down key doesnt toggle the effect on and off on my keyboard so where do i set a toggle key for it?

      Many Thanks

This is a Reshade effect. It has no understanding of what you are doing, crafting, etc. Just ensure you have a hotkey setup to turn off the effect in the Settings of Reshade, and use it when you want and turn it off when you want.

Remember that crouching will turn off the heat hazard, and the hazard only works noon+. I had to ensure the effect could be ignored when a player wanted to sleep in the middle of the day (siesta), and since you can sleep when taking damage the only sure way to to crouch yourself into the bed.

Do you mean the settings of Reshade when your in the game? accessed in 'Home' menu? Dont forget im fairly new to Reshade. Otherwise im not sure settings you mean..

Yes im aware that crouching stops the effect, because im currently testing i just tgm for time being. If the effect starts at Noon+ at what point in the day does it stop. The reason i ask is because in my game late into the evening even after nightfall (which is 7pm due to True Storms) i still get the shimmering. As i have little RL xp with deserts i cant say if thats normal, but id be surprised if the shimmer effect existed in deserts in real life that late in the evening or does it? You seem knowledgable about real world deserts..

Also regarding my thumbnail, heat haze is a warping of air, and in RL is transparent, am i meant to be seeing jagged black around the objects with your shimmer or do i need to manually tweak something because the shimmer doesnt look right..

I won't help you understand Reshade here. Watch a video about on YT.

The heat hazard and the heat Reshade effect are two different things. They are wholly unrelated and do nothing together; the former is a game mechanic and the other is just a visual effect. Learn how to open the Reshade menu so you can set a hotkey to turn the effect on and off.

If you don't like the look of the heat shimmer, don't use it.

yer your right, best way for me to learn is go research myself, ive already learned to use other tools.

ive got it sussed now anyway, it looks like a proper heat haze, i even tweaked some variables such as distance of effect & so forth because i could still see clear lines moving up the screen with the effect so toned down the speed which resolved that, it looks pretty perfect now id say, though it hasnt singled out objects which heat hazes dont normally, its the entirety of the landscape in front of you, so i found your screenshot confusing initially.

Shimmer is the incorrect verb though im afraid. i wouldnt describe it as a shimmer (in the british language the definition of Shimmer in the Canon is: shines with a soft wavering light i.e the sea shimmered in the sunlight, light being the variable, not heat.) So perhaps a different word would better describe it, though ofc many do use the word Shimmer, it aint a crime. Im a Wordsmith of my language, thats part of what I do for a living, the official canon for describing heat hazes is the word 'mirage' should be used as the usual, primary use of 'mirage', is to define an illusion, a metaphorical usage coming from the literal meaning of the appearance of a shiny water like surface on the horizon caused by heat refraction. That doesnt take into account of course objects present in the scene which exist but are subject to illusionary states during heat haze events. Thats the official English language Canon line anyway lol.

And this point doesnt require you to be arsey about it, i am grateful for the help i have received but im still right nonetheless. Thanks for making it :)

It isn't mine to name or rename. The effect is a product of Marty McFly, a well known Reshade guru, something he cooked up probably a decade ago or more for Reshade version 1.0. I only tweaked it. Feel free to be technical with him on his Discord.

I'm having a problem where the flies for it are not compiling in the reshade menu and that they can't be opened, im kinda new to modding so i don't really know what this means?

Probably a problem with your version of Reshade. I'd go find a lower version, v4 or even v3 to see if it's as simple as that.

This is ALL presuming you see that the heathaze.fx isn't compiling. It is the ONLY effect in this file. Any other effects aren't part of this mod.

I'm going to presume you completely deleted Reshade before installing a new one. You can't just "reinstall" various versions hoping it overwrites. Did you?

If you are using it alone and not with other effects, use Reshade's GUI to disable with whatever hotkey Reshade is using. You can use it when you want and disable it when you don't. I ONLY use it occasionally. It's great, but not that great.

Also, deleting the .fx file you added will stop the effect. Just look in the same folder path as the file you downloaded.

guys this preset is absolut porno and so fu...cking awesome sry for my vulgar tongue but i rarely saw something more immersive then this preset. the feeling its like when i was in egypt in the desert. the heat haze looks so realistic i literally got thirsty while playing my desperado overhaul playthrough;-) thank you for that incredible experience mate you deserve a lot more credit for that. its a real hidden gem what you have made here. job f***ing well done. endorsed and voted for mod of the month. and for all players out there which want to play a real immersiv desperado/desert playthrough you have to download this and show some love to the creator. the only complain which i have is, that indoor the heat haze should stop automatically than it would be perfect but you can set a manual toggle to switch off the effect. so im complaining on a really high level.

I feel the same about the shimmer in my Desperados/Badlands 2 characters. Being able to turn it on/off at will is the one nice feature of an effect that otherwise can sometimes become a little obnoxious. lol

      Thanks for the vote!

And remember, if you don't stay hydrated we will find your skull someday baking in the scorching midday sun.

Once you have Reshade installed, then add my Shimmer from the download, open the user interface when in game (Home key usually with mine). Make sure the box for Heathaze is checked. You'll also know it is working even as you load the game because the effect is auto-on, so your game menu will shimmer. The Page Down key toggles it on and off.

The video in the Tab section can help you install Reshade using Reshade, but here's another one that's just a few minutes long if you want to do it manually: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVFJ40lo3zA

This is what I wanted for long, but I just use an ENB and not yet Reshade. Can I install Reshade without a preset and just use your mod for the heat effect or would that conflict with the ENB (I use Spirit, https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42461/)?

Till now I've seen Reshade as the ugly little less talented brother of ENB. If that might be wrong and Reshade could replace ENB or should be used in addition, what Reshade presets would be recommended for a hot Commonwealth? I prefer a world with haze and not-so-sharp far away structures cause frankly said detailed and sharp textures frequently look like from a toy world. Currently therefore I'm mostly using polluted Far Harbor and Nuka World weathers in the Commonwealth.

Hello! You can use Reshade and ENB together, and a "preset" is just certain effects turned on that you can just as easily turn off in the GUI in any order or number your like. Obviously in many ways that makes that Reshade preset go from interesting to look really bad! Without any effects active Reshade is doing practically nothing at all other than taking up a tiny amount of memory to be On.

So my "preset" in this download is only one effect, and that effect is the Heat Shimmer/Haze. The only way to test it is to try it, and if it just doesn't work with your chosen ENB preset or looks awful with it, you can untick the effect in the Reshade GUI or even remove Reshade without any problems just like you can with ENB.

One good thing with having only the one effect is that you can toggle it with a hotkey (PgDn in this case) on and off as you see fit like I show in the video. If you had already been using Reshade with another preset, the toggle would turn the whole preset off as its the preset not the individual effects. I currently only use Reshade for this heat haze. I too use an ENB preset called Mojave from the Badlands 2 page. It's bright and desert enhancing and does a great job for me of saying its hot! It underlying ENB beneath it is Film Workshop that provides a lens effect that distorts things on the fly depending on what you had just been looking at. In that way it distorts the far distance but also sometimes it looks like you're having trouble focusing even on your pipboy for a moment. It's hot out after all, your brain is baked so yeah, it's cool.

Brewing a cup of coffee at some random campfire in the Mojave, or now in the Wealth, having to use dirty water you sucked from a nearby pool God knows if drinkable, adding what few edible bits were left on the scrub plant you found earlier to give it kick . . . that's my desert. I have another mod coming out later today, a patch of Desperados Overhaul related to settler farming. Fun!

i cant wait! few games/mods set in the desert ever really manage to convey the feeling of actual heat. only times I've actually felt like i was in a boiling dustbowl during a game has been playing both red dead redemptions, and playing with your mods. i don't know how to explain it but its always the little things that capture that feeling. the sound of footsteps, the haze in the distance, the empty sky, even the names of things in the world like landmarks and plants. maybe you feel the same way.

Yeah I tried my best to provide some image that showed off how it might look at various angles and had to settle for a video. lol

I hope more people play with the controls of Reshade effects. Its how I came across several cool effects I hadn't known about.
