niche knowledge that always sorta explained these for me: IRL compressing waste graphite from nuclear reactors into diamonds can create diamonds that give off a consistent electrical charge lasting a couple thousand years, i always assumed considering the lack of power plugs on vending machines, radios, and even the desk fans, that they were powered by these nuclear diamonds

The lengths some people go to preserve the fragility of their immersion...
I'd like to believe that someone at Bethesda has actually thought about it.

You'd be surprised how many things Devs of games foul up or make mistakes on... It's a LOT. They're not magical gods like some people want to think.
People often make excuses for Dev's mistakes like the guy above does to make sense of that which makes no sense. It's like people who look at the surface of Mars and see things which aren't there from just seeing a funny shaped rock. It's natural.

I know this is dead but this made me giggle because in the Fallout universe nuclear fission was discovered earlier than in our timeline, so it's not exactly a far stretch to consider the idea that most portable devices use some sort of nuclear battery. A "fission battery" perhaps? Oh wait, there's an item in Fallout: New Vegas called exactly that. LMAO

It's not a stretch considering it's been canon since FNV and the tech exists (albeit primitive IRL).

Of course, developers make mistakes, and thank the gods we have Modders, however, the person creating a narrative to add immersion to their stories and gameplays is not a bad thing, and it's not as if he was somehow covering up the mistakes or defending the mistakes from the Devs, but man, there are things that the Devs don't need to answer, you'll see an ''error'' it could be something intentional, like this fact about the fans, you know you're talking about a fiction of a dystopian reality, right? so... many forget that the Fallout universe is a futuristic universe...

Great saw this mod while browsing mods. Ignored it. But after that, whenever I played the game I couldn`t unsee the spinning fans for no reason! Agh! Downloading now!

Thank you for the mod, the spinning fans are nonsense. Could you go a (to admit, overly huge) step further and add a version which deletes the electric lights in the buildings which are not occupied by humans? I'm thinking of similar mods for Skyrim, making dark dungeons. Even if there were fusion core reactors running forever, the bulbs would have been destroyed after the long time, and the electric net would have gone out of order even if it had survived the bombs (it needs a constant balance of potential and brakes down easily). In human living spaces you can imagine that they have a hidden generator active, but for ghouls or even supermutants? Maybe it's too much work but it would make for a nice primitive Commonwealth.

I agree with everything you wrote, but what you want is not that easy.
It is one thing to replace a mesh of some unimportant prop like these fans - they are not used for anything else but decoration, and whether they are moving or not, will not affect the gameplay.
But if i would do this with the lights, it would affect great many other areas where the same lights are used, including settlements and other places where power is supposed to exist.
Also, not every lightbulb is an actual light source - very often there are some other "meshless" light sources placed around to emit a light as if it is coming from some lightbulb or lamp, etc., so simply replacing (or even removing) the lightbulb that you can see will not get rid of all the light in the room or hallway/whatever.
Because of that, you would need to edit the interior/exterior cells to remove the light sources, and that will create a lot of compatibility issues with any mod that touches these cells.
But the real problem is that it would require a lot of tedious manual work, where you go through all cells to change the lightbulbs/lamps into ones that are OFF, and edit/remove any of the "meshless" light sources.
I dont want to do that - it is too much work for something that doesn't really bother me, sorry.

But didn't somebody made some suitable "LIghting Overhaul" mod already?
I mean, you can find about a dozen lighting overhauls for Skyrim, so i would expect ppl to do the same for this game too, did you look for such mods?

You can just delete those meshes, and leave only desk fans.

Finally, a way of stopping those annoying spinning fan blades, which should have had their motors seized up either due to the initial EMP magnetization from the initial nuclear warhead detonation, or 200+ years of rust, grime, lack of lubricant, and general neglect.

Considering that The Wasteland is undergoing what seems like a perpetual summer, with the heat alone being enough to fry deathclaw omelettes with, and the want for a convenient breeze, I can understand why some people are complaining about this mod...

Anyways, looking forward to how this mod affects the fans in-game, once I have figured out which mods I'll be using for my next game

Would it be possible to have them move if there is ambient/radiant power but stationary when there isn't?

Like how lamps and televisions work?

Maybe if these things are also available as placeable workshop items, those items could be changed in this manner, but i am not using workshop myself so i am not really interested in doing that - something like that would be best as part of some other workshop-related mod.

Not sure about you but fans i have when powered are much faster, i always saw the slow move in game as wind.

Or maybe wastelanders glue flies on it...

And there are signs that some power still runs through some of the electric network as it shows by the lights still on at Red Rocket and other places. When we find a power core for the power armor, it is not depleted so i guess there could be giant power cores in some plant still supplying power for a while if network is not too damaged.

i know, there are arguments for both sides.
But wind would at least sometimes result in chaotic, random spins, but the fans are spinning consitently at the same speeds, forever uninterrupted - not wind.

I did this originally only for the desk fans, which not only irked me simply because they still had some magical power, but most importantly because you can find them literally just lying upside down on top of some garbage pile outside, and that just seemed super weird to me.

Then i added the prewar/restored desk fan, not because it wouldn't make sense that such a pretty new thing still works, but because it still keeps running after you blow it up or shoot it during a firefight and it lands on the other side of the room (also applies to the regular one).

Eventually i added the ceiling fans, because there are few places where they definitely shouldn't be in working order, and its better to replace the mesh than to edit the cells.
A fan that is not spinning doesn't bother me, even if it would be in a shiny prewar house, it doesn't imply the fan is borken, maybe its just switched off, no big deal.
But spinning when everything around is in ruins, including half of the ceiling, that makes me cringe - and if there is a sparkling wire nearby, its even worse!
...tell you what - make your wires sparkle like that, and then go have a looksie if your computer fans are still spinning ;-)

I belive in the lore that they are as much other things in the Fo universe fueled by fusion cells/core.

Thus they could still be moveing after all this time, if the metals havent rusted or been damaged.

Given that the lifespan of alot of the fusion fueled items was belived to be 200+ years and some.
(some of them however do require cooling fuelant, like the cars, as you can see from the signs at the "Gas stations")

Lore reasons sadly mean nothing because Bethesda hardly seems to care for lore so they likely spin due to wind and even possibly fact people simply wanted to see them spin. If they were powered they would likely move a whole lot faster.

Haha was thinking something like this. Someone managed to make them spin from hat I remember and it was a big deal even though you could not even use them from what I remember in any way.
