About this mod

Re-purpose underused vanilla assets to add .38 and .45 revolvers.

Permissions and credits
Given the small variety of pistols in FO4, it seems strange that they did so little with the pistol assets in the game. The .44 has rare ammo and doesn't appear until fairly late-game, and the Deliverer is beautiful but relegated to a unique 10mm variant that you could easily miss for several playthroughs.

What this mod aims to do is fold the existing vanilla pistol assets back into the lower levels, and enemy leveled lists. Specific reasons to do this:
  • Aesthetics: Many find pipe weapons ugly (myself included) and getting more prewar weapons to appear across all leveled lists waters down the pipe ugliness.
  • Gameplay variety: The only early-game pistol ammo with a purpose-built pistol is 10mm. .38 and .45 can only be run through pipe weapons, and while (probably) in some technical sense you can get a lot of variety out of pipe weapons, it sure doesn't feel that way.
  • Immersion: The .38 ammo box has a picture of a revolver on it, and any human-being from planet Earth would most closely associate .38 with 20th century Police service revolvers. It really doesn't make sense that the Commonwealth would be overflowing with .38 spc and no .38 spc revolvers, to the point where desperate people are building pipeguns to fire the mountains of bullets they are sitting on.

tl;dr - This mod creates a standalone .38/.45 revolver (convertible between those two calibers, with Standard/Hardened/Powerful/Advanced for each).

Some gameplay details. The new revolver:
  • Is balanced around the pipe revolver, its .38 conversion mod, and the hunting rifle's .38 conversion mod. I have play tested (mostly with .38 because I just like it) this myself quite a bit and I found it both fun and balanced versus vanilla weapons.
  • Shoots as slow as the .44, but has less recoil and is more accurate. This is a compromise between gameplay balance, technical issues (the single action animation severely limits how fast you can make the revolvers fire), and realism. Yes, in real life you can fire a double action .38 spc real fast in a tight group, but this feels more balanced honestly.
  • Has the same mods as .44, with the exception of scope and bull-barrel-- to keep the special hunting revolver feel of the .44.
  • Has different sounds for firing .38 and .45 rounds. If you don't like the .38 sound then file a bug (or let me know some other way)-- I wanted it to sound noticeably wimpy compared to the .45 or .44 but the current choice is far from perfect.

Some technical details. The new revolver:
  • Is based on the .44 mesh.
  • Is retextured (see credits).
  • Is not a replacer.
  • Is added to leveled lists via script (see credits). It will show up on raiders, in .38, straight away (unfortunate workaround to vanilla bug in main raider weapon LL, fixed in UFO4P).
  • Has custom InstanceNamingRules merged via script (see credits).
  • Does not modify any vanilla assets/forms at all, except by script.
  • Has no dependencies on other mods.
  • Should therefore not conflict with any other mods, except ones that replace the vanilla .44 mesh or erase all the leveled lists, etc.
  • TODO: pack assets in an archive, they are currently loose.

F.A.Q.
  • Why would anyone want a .45 ACP revolver? These existed during, and for a short time after, WW2, because there was so much .45 ACP around and it's a very effective pistol cartridge. You have to load them in a special crescent clip and ejecting them is finickier (I guess), but it works.
