This mod allows you to upgrade your Pip-Boy so that it will give you audio warnings when faced with a wide variety of environmental, combat or health hazards, similar to Half-Life's HEV suit. You may be given warnings when faced with situations like:

- drop in health
- being poisoned
- being exposed to radiation
- being caught within the blast of a mini-nuke
- being exposed to freezing/high temperatures
- fracturing your limbs/skull/ribs etc.

There are also internal cooldowns so that you do not get these messages excessively.

You'll also gain some very minor defensive perks, but this is mostly cosmetic and won't significantly alter the game balance:

- 1% reduction of all damage taken (2% if wearing Power Armor)
- tiny amounts of periodic healing when dropping below certain health levels (for comparison, a single bottle of purified water is significantly more effective, even on Survival)

The HEK is customizable and comes with a control holotape. You can choose:

- volume (Normal, Low or Very Low)
- activation of silent mode (defensive perks will still work)
- shutting down the HEK until you re-enable it (perks also stop functioning)
- voice type (2 choices: RaDOS and Crissa Nog)

If you lose the HEK's control holotape you can craft another for a few simple materials. You don't need to rebuild the entire HEK system.

Questions and Answers

Q: How do I get started?
A: You'll need Medic and Science perks (rank 1 both) first. You'll also need a bunch of materials, visit the chem station to see the full list of requirements.

This upgrade is not done through the armor workbench.

You only need to craft it once and then use it as you would a stealth boy or a chem/food item to upgrade your Pip-Boy forever. Once upgraded, you'll get a control holotape to customize things about it.

Q: Why are there two versions of the HEK in the chem station menu?
A: There really aren't. But you can decide on a default starting voice (RaDOS or Crissa Nog). Otherwise the "two" HEKs are really the same upgrade with different starting settings. Even if you pick the "wrong" voice, you can change it using the control holotape.

Q: I crafted a HEK. Why can't I craft another?
A: You will only need one. If you crafted the version with the "wrong" voice, use the control holotape to change it after you upgrade. The safeguard is in place to prevent wasting materials. Do not try to circumvent it, it won't help you at all.

Q: Can I use on NPC companions?
A: No. This is only for you, although Father's power armor from the Father Companion mod has a similar hazard system.

Q: Do I need a power armor to make this work?
A: No, but wearing a power armor will increase the defense bonus from 1% to 2%.

Q: Why are the perks so poor?
A: This mod is mostly for cosmetic purposes, it's not a cheat mod so the perks are intentionally poor so it doesn't affect balance, which is already poor enough at high levels even on Survival. No need to make it worse.

Q: I actually hate the perks, can you remove them?
A: A protective system that offers literally 0 protection would make it hard to suspend disbelief.

Q: Can you remove the requirements?
A: I will not. A protective system that's completely free, no materials, no expertise in science required would make it hard to suspend disbelief. This is Fallout not magic. Come to think of it, even magic based games like Skyrim have to at least make sense on some level.

Q: I found a bug, can you fix it?
A: If you can detail it enough for me to replicate it, yes. Otherwise, your post will likely be ignored as unfounded until you can provide adequate details.

Q: Is this compatible with [insert popular mod here]?
A: As the mod doesn't edit a single vanilla ID and all of its content is optional unless you craft a HEK from a chem station and use it, this is about as compatible as it gets. You shouldn't have issues with most mods unless they do something really unexpected and... well... wrong.

If for some reason you find the HEK warning system doesn't work well with another mod, you can also just shut it down.

Q: Is this available for consoles?
A: Only XB1 as it's completely impossible to replicate on the PS4. PS4 has no custom audio and no custom scripts. Effectively, no part of this mod can be made on PS4.
