To answer a question, this is an actual HD shot of the night sky courtesy of photographer Kai Pilger. It was obtained for free personal and commercial use with no attributing requirements necessary.
Kai has several beautiful shots of the night sky and should you wish to see this and more, you can find it here:
It is brighter than the Vanilla sky but, has a more natural feel to it. As the game tiles the sky together, there may be some slight and subtly variations where the pieces meet. Usually this is directly above the player and not in the normal view during game play. Anyway, hope you are able to spot familiar constellations and I hope you enjoy it!
I'm about to try this. There was another I was interested in awhile that showed the galaxy, but it seemed outdated and was afraid it wouldn't work with newer updates.
I was just wondering - is this at all based on the real night sky? In other words, would we be able to see any constellations or planet? Or is it just a random pattern?
And thanks for bringing us a new night sky mod. Cheers
Yes, in fact you will see some highlights of the galactic arm in the sky. Image is actually an HD stock footage from a telescope so, yes, actual night sky will be seen. Very subtle though so, if you use the HD Galaxy mod like me, it will work fine and not look awkward!!
Thanks for the reply. I am enjoying your mod very much. WAY better than the vanilla night-sky. I have been considering a 'moon mod' for my first modding attempt (if your going to mod something, make it something everyone has to look at, am I right? LOL), and this is giving me the incentive.
Only two minor quibbles - I can see the 'seams' where the textures end. Its not that noticeable unless you really look for it, and being a bit of an artist myself I love to study other people's work. There are some tricks you can do with GIMP (and PS) to fudge that stuff. It still looks really good, though. The second thing is that the stars look a bit large. I assume that's because they were taken from an actual telescope image, enlarging them. Regardless, I will continue to use it because it is a VAST improvement over the vanilla game.
Yes, I have the same mod as well as the the HD Moon with phases mod. Works fine with both on at same time. It just replaces the starsky.dds file. The actual galaxy texture in the galaxy mod is an overlay to the vanilla sky texture and has a transparent background.
