About rusty/brown/black face issue! Read this if you have this problem:
Spoiler:
Show
There are two things that can cause rusty/black/brown face:
One is when loading a save game. The game for any reason don't load the texture right and thus gives the rusty face. This can even happen when changing cells or worldspace. It is random, can be fixed by disable/enable in console or even with a load game, or a game restart. This is what Rusty Face Fix [Nexus ID: 31028]... well, fix.
The other problem is entirely texture related. One cause could be corrupted, missing or wrong texture file. The other is that Beth harcoded the texture files to be all in the same size. So if you have one file in 2K, all other (face) files of the same type must be 2K too. Original game uses 512 _s files, and HD DLC uses 1024 _s files, that's why people had rusty face issues when the HD DLC was released. They were using texture mods for the face that were using 512 _s files. HD DLC still uses 1024 _d and _n files, and Real HD face uses 2048 (2K) size for these, so everything is incompatible.
When using a mod that retexture *face* files to bigger resolutions, you must take away all other mods that change anything related to face, including tints - makeup. Only hair and eyes are safe, but brows suffer from this aswell, if i'm not mistaken.
Note: DeLuxe Makeup is an example of an incompatible mod. I tried upscaling it to 2K to use here but i just can't get it to work. Maybe the author can give some insight or help with this, i'll send a pm.
Possible fixes:

Show
- Disable any mod that changes makeup, tints, freckles, warpaints and other face related textures. Eyes (not eyebrows) and hair are fine. LMCC have it's own 2K patch... i guess you read that in description.
- Install Real HD loose Face Textures from original mod page. Not the Main, only one of the face textures. This will overwrite any 1K face file from other body textures.
- Give up on your old body texture, and install one without face files - like the 8K one -, or delete manually the face files from it. Please download manually the loose files from Real Face HD original mod page to look what is used, pay attention, and delete the same files from your Data folder or from the texture mod if using MO. You'll want to do this if the loose files from Real HD brings performance problems.
- Be aware that any mod that edits NPCs, or add NPCs, and include standalone textures for them will NOT be compatible. I mean, if they have 1K face files, they will have rusty face. If that's the case, you have a follower mod or a mod that changes vanilla followers, you may want to replace their face files and tints with 2K ones.
- If only your character still have Rusty face and you don't know what is causing it, open LooksMenu (slm 14) and save a preset of the character. Or just make a hard save of the game before editing, so you can go back. Open the tab to change makeup, scars and everything else, and disable EVERYTHING. If your character face returns to normal color, then you may want to check the addons one by one. Maybe it is an eyebrow, maybe a freckle, maybe a scar or a face paint. If your character still have rusty face, pray. I mean, well, try a different preset or a new game and see if it fixes the problem. If not, give a shout here and i can pray with you. Or try to help.
Since this was made with performance in mind, a note for AMD graphic card users (the game was made with NVidia in mind, but you can try too if you wish):

I already used some other fixes, but changed to High FPS Physics and FO4FI FPS Fix, along with some of the ini changes for HBAO and Anti Aliasing, and game is SMOOTH. I even had a decent FPS gain that i never experienced before, playing at 2560x1440 with Improved and Expanded Everything II ENB and lots of mods.

Please be aware that using ForceVideoMemorySize=FALSE can cause the problem of textures loading with low resolution. I don't see FPS difference with this on True or False, but as True it prevents this bug.
Also, try to learn how to compress textures to ba2. Be it with my guide or something else, but do this. Pack all your textures in files with around 2gb. I packed the textures from weapons and armors and got nearly 20gb of free space on my SSD. Probably another 20gb from other textures. Just double check: in Archive2, the path MUST start with Textures, if not, then the ba2 may just not work. The path must be the same as the original game.
In regards to 'better makeup' and other tint/skin mods, after troubleshooting my own upgrade dealing with the rusty face issue, when upscaling, it seems: tintmasks w/o alpha need to be encoded in bc1 (4bit).. makeup with alpha should be encoded in bc3 (8bit).. face textures (with or without alpha) need bc3 (alpha) even when there is no alpha.. normals and spec both need bc5.
I was attempting to use bc7 which worked fine for face textures in Skyrim SE but seems to cause issues in fo4 in terms of face tex. That and of course making sure the dimensions are consistent across the board in terms of dimensions. RealHD Face being 2048 for D & N.. 1024 for spec.
The ba2 creation for looks menu compendium was a great idea and I was shocked how much it reduced the file size. That in combo with your ba2 is working great and after upscaling the loose makeup mods i'm back in business. ty!
Now here we have a treasure of a comment! I tried saving the tint files with different formats to no avail, and now you just give me all that i needed!! Thanks!! I was struggling to find what was the right way to do it, always failing. Now i'm really overwhelmed with RL, so i'm not messing with modding for some time, but i'll take a look at it when i have some free time.
I'm very happy that you shared this information!
With some attention, you can create a ba2 for all your texture mods, like all body, face and makeup/scar, both to decrease size and to make the game read them in a better way, thus probably getting a more stable game without 'lag'. It really improved the overall feeling of my game. Same fps, less stutter. This whole compression thing is a ''game saver'' :)
Wow, ezFreee! This is a goldmine information. It’s difficult to get all this boiled down into such quick highlights, since I’m still learning so much about textures across the board. AFAIK, there’s no way to tell the encoding of a texture after it’s saved.
Anyway, thank you for this. Saving it to a text file for easy reference on my own!
I was getting the brown face bug with this mod and some of the Heroine presets. Thanks to your BA2 archive info I was spurred take a look the files. After extracting and archiving and trial in game I figured out it was the eye liners causing the issue for me. Looking at the extracted files in the TintMasks folder there are 9 files - mostly eyeliners - that have a 2049KB size, while the rest have 2731KB. I pulled the 2K files from LMCC (renaming the appropriate CurioINC files) to replace the smaller extracted files. After archiving them into RealHDFace Tex - Textures.ba2 and restarting the game I'm no longer getting brown faces on the presets.
Might be the type of dds format that was used for the smaller files that is causing issues... Like ezFreee says in the sticky and from a post in deLuxe Makeup (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4398?tab=posts) squaresphere response includes: - Tint masks WITHOUT alpha: BC1 (4bit) - Makeup WITH alpha: BC3 (8bit) - Face textures: BC3 (with alpha support), whether the texture has an alpha or not - Normal/Specular: BC5
Hope that helps a little! And Thank You for ridding me of the stuttering!
No problem, and many thanks for the info. Sadly, i was never able to succesfully upscale and compress deLuxe files. I tried this all and it doesn't work in game. But i also left it behind a long time ago too, so i should try again to be sure.
I use GIMP to do this and was able to almost make Unique NPCs files to work with 2K but not makeups... jokes on me i guess lmao
So with a little further experimentation over the weekend here's what I found: The CurioINC files are for males and don't match the face eye position on females but they were the correct size of file. When I took the deLuxe makeup files and enlarged to 200% (2048x2048) and saved as BC1 they came out as 2049KB. However if you make sure to tick the Generate Mip Maps box when you save (I was using paint.NET) the file size is 2731KB. Testing in game on my presets - many used to have brown face - I haven't seen any brown faces.
Try upscaling and compress saving as BC1 with Mip Maps for the deLuxe files and see if it works for you.
Ty for the info again, i may try it but i'm in the process of leaving FO4 after completing the Main quest with my character, so i prob won't be messing with mods anymore xD
For anyone that wants to test I'll share the changes I made, The file needs to go into the Fallout\Data folder and overwrite (you could save a backup of the original file first, or if you forget you could always reinstall the mod and it should overwrite)
I use the Real HD Faces Textures, (the Main mod + 2K Face Textures) I changed the deLuxe Makeup to include Mipmaps (and I think I may have changed the moles to appealing moles as well) Dropbox of RealHDFace Tex - Textures.ba2
I too had to give up and tried Albamuths tip (thx for that). Natural 2K Face Textures (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/33331) worked like a charm for me. Used the first main file (all in one). Thx Di3sIrae, I really liked the textures but couldn't get that rusty face bug to disappear from some of the npcs.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but the NPC's also get these textures right? (I mean judging by the images, yes they do but just asking :)) Also with the middle file RealHD Faces Textures, I'm basically getting everything right? No need for any files from Avallonkao original mod?
Yep that's right! Original mod is not a requirement.
Second one has the RealHD 2K face files, first one has the old and now removed RF/RM textures from same author. Not much difference but I used RM/RF myself as personal preference.
All characters in the game use the same texture files
Not sure if anyone else had the same problem as me, but I reinstalled my mods to get rid of the main mod and add this one instead. Just spent the last 4 hours trying to get my face preset to work again. Found out I still needed the LMCC 2K face texture patch from here https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/24830?tab=files to make this work again.
Figured I'd post this in case someone is having a problem. Didn't see it mentioned.
So I could be being dumb, but whether it's this mod or the original, it doesn't seem to mention whatsoever that this already includes textures for for makeup, freckles, blemishes, scars, etc. NOT just simply face textures for base, young, mid, and old (and some replacers include ghouls too). That's what viewing the BA2 through a browser is showing me anyway. This is a total, complete comprehensive replacer for everything face related, excluding eyes, lashes, mouth, and teeth, as those are totally separate models (and if you get the invisible face bug, all those are visible, clearly separate from the face). Yea, the file size should have tipped me off, but but there's nothing on the description hammering in this point, or communicating it at all. "2K Face" doesn't communicate that it's a total overhaul of all face textures and cosmetics.
Could (COULD, I don't really know, but maybe ) be a source of conflicts, incompatibility, and rust face if you're losing your mind as to why you're getting rust face when you're using what are suppose to be 2k freckle, makeup, and etc textures with this mod that you might (understandably...) be thinking is JUST faces textures. Loose files should just simply overwrite(?), but face/cosmetic textures are notoriously fussy anyway in this game. This isn't to flame the mod or anything, just, in the event this it totally true... some much needed clarification is warranted.
First of all, i must agree there is a lack of thorough information on what is included in my ba2 file. However, your confusion actually comes just from a simple lack of information.
From my sticky post about the 'rust/black face problem':
So if you have one file in 2K, all other (face) files of the same type must be 2K too. Original game uses 512 _s files, and HD DLC uses 1024 _s files, that's why people had rusty face issues when the HD DLC was released. If you have a 2k texture for your face, you must have 2k textures for makeup, brow, facepaint, etc. There's no way around it, unless someone released something new that changes that. I stopped playing in 2021.
While I did not include this in the description of the mod, I did mention the sticky post in case you are having rust/black face problems.
Hope this can bring some light to your worries, but feel free to ask if you need any help, just mind that i've been away from FO4 modding for some years now.
I finally managed to get it working the same day I posted that comment (after wrestling with it for a couple), whether it was about load order, it just deciding to work, or one of the makeup and moles texture mods were causing issues... but after getting this to work without those 2 mods enabled and shuffling things around, I then re-enabled them to make sure... but then there was no rust face, and just left them on (below this mods textures). I think(?) simply knowing that this mod includes everything related to face textures helped to sort of the order and get things to work. Didn't change any of the mods in the end, even after downloading others just too see if it would go away. Utterly no issues so far for several hours in a new playthrough. Also installed 2 rust fixing mods (one passive, the other active hotkey), but I've seen no one thus far with rust.
Looks great, and textures actually look natural toned (especially compared to some other textures on here).
Oh I'm very glad to hear that. I once had problems with Rust face due to a bad ba2 i made... And it took me a good amount of time to realize that hah
The game is a bit sensitive to this so yeah, load order matters in the end. Loose files will always take precedence over a ba2 and this requires user to install things carefully. It is too easy to mess up if you still had 1K face paints lying around. NPCs will load using their facegen files, and this is really a grey area to me. Player is easier to find incorrect files because they'll show instantly, but for NPCs they may or may not have rust face even with wrong files because of facegen.
If you really want to test, the way would be to open the character creator menu and go through all tint files one by one.
Nowadays i believe we may have tools to make the process easier and in batches, but I'm sorry, i can't take the request. Not playing FO4 anymore and not really doing much modding (i was converting some stuff in Skyrim and now it's on hold too...). Sorry, but i hope someone can do it!
I feel sorry for my understanding ability. From the description, if I want to replace the original Real HD with the BA2 version and not use other body textures (which include face textures), do I just need to install the Real Face HD Textures (194.8MB)? It seems this is equivalent to the Real HD Main File (129.3MB) plus Real HD Faces Textures (43.5MB) in the original mod.
Don't feel sorry, you have a better understanding ability than you think, because you got it right.
If you're not going to use any other body texture mod, Real Faces HD Textures is the main file with everything included. RF and RM is the same but with different textures.
Keep in mind that if you want to install a body texture that has no option for 2K faces, you would need to delete the 'head' files from it. I'm always open to lend a hand if you wish so, it just depends on which mod manager you're using and the mod you're installing.
even better than the original i'm having a weird problem, the faces of some males ghouls it's the same that my character player, make up,scars...anyone knows something about this?
If i wanna use a body texture mod that comes with its own 2k face textures, does that mean i should download only the "Real HD Face Main file"?
Also, would it be redundant to use this mod with FO4FI HD? im not sure if this mod only effects the player character or not, and i want npcs to have 2k faces as well
You should be safe to use only the Main File, but it's always good to read the description of the texture mod because it may already have these files in 2K uploaded, so this one becomes redundant. Or maybe they have their own requirement.
As for face files, i have 0 clue if NPCs are really not affected or not. It's a big grey area to me because, when i was working with UNPC, the author told me that yeah, for NPCs to work i would need to redo ALL facegen files with 2K face tex, but then we got to a "what" moment when we realized the NPCs were not getting black face without the facegen files.
So, i am not sure if the game just ignored the files i replaced entirely for NPCS and used only facegen, or if somehow someway somewhere it decided to use them real time.
I am not sure anymore because i dropped FO4 3 years ago, and newer mods are probably right and have more research done over my experiments. Back then only the author from UNPC, that i'm aware, was talking about facegen for NPCs as the correct way to do it. And, as you can see, this implies on downloading an absurd amount of data only for some upscaled textures.
yeah the 2k face textures i wanted said i need to download the original "Real HD Face Texture 2k" mod, but i wanted them packed in ba2, so do i download your "Real HD Face Main file" instead?
i think the FO4FI HD mod i linked, it explained the issue with npcs not using the 2k face textures in the description, so they redid every npcs face, hence the big file size. but what i dont know if i should also use your mod along with the one i linked...
I'm sure they have everything the main file from this mod has, because otherwise it would be pointless to upscale NPC facegen and not the base tint files for player, but it's not my mod so i can't say for sure. If you already have that mod installed and want to download this one, and you're using MO2, the option to show conflicts inside packages should show you if they're overlapping each other.

And, as you can see, this implies on downloading an absurd amount of data only for some upscaled textures.
i think the FO4FI HD mod i linked, it explained the issue with npcs not using the 2k face textures in the description, so they redid every npcs face, hence the big file size. but what i dont know if i should also use your mod along with the one i linked...
