Really? That's great to hear. Couldn't find it in the UF4P Version History to confirm but if they did add this to the patch then they probably added a proper lod mesh as opposed to making its visibility permanent like I did.
Yep. It's there. If you look at the change log for 2.1.1, go down to the "Placement/Layout/Ownership and other World Object Fixes" section. It will be the 6th bullet point down in that section.

See, I dunno but the billboard and the fences up at the vault elevator ALWAYS disappeared when I was more than 3 inches from them, until I used this mod that is. Oh crap, it's because there was a conflict between FOLIP lol. Well, I'm still gonna argue that this mod is still useful because it still contains something the no other mod, not even the Unofficial Patch covers: the control pod. The little control station next to the elevator? Yeah, this mod flags that as persistent.. no other mod touches it.
so dont count yourself out, this mod isn't obsolete! :D
oh, and uh, not for nothing...but it has 4 ITMs in it. Just sayin'
I have 1,400 hours on this game. This has bothered me for every second of those 1,400 hours. I never knew this mod existed, and only found it because I thought your name was funny and clicked on your profile. Thanks for this, endorsed. Now its time for another 1,400 hours with less bother.
The only other area in the game that does this that I find infuriating is USS Riptide, but I'm not sure if there's a precombine issue there. Still not sure why Bethesda decided a big tug boat that crashed into a bridge shouldn't be visible from outside the immediate area.
Yep that area is one of the worst offenders with object pop in because of how open it is. Coming from DC you can see the road to College Square pop in and walking towards DC you can see parts of the stadium pop in. Then of course there's the USS Riptide itself which you already mentioned.
As of now I only play with weather mods that make the world absolutely foggy or snowy so I don't have to see the terrible LOD or pop-in. My "LOD Fix" really isn't an elegant solution on a large scale. It works for small things like the Vault and Billboard, but applying this to more objects could result in some performance loss.
Like I said in another comment; I'm trying to come up with a more elegant solution but I still have a lot to learn, so no ETA on that.
Firstly - thanks for the mod, love the fact that the Billboard and Guard Post don't just 'pop-in' any longer :) Secondly a request if at all possible ..... Any chance you could move your magic eye over the APC near Sanctuary and fix the LOD there?? It annoys me a bit that I can't see it all the time even on the Sanctuary bridge. Ain't nowt major just an annoyance lol. Anyway thanks again for your mod and I've happily endorsed it amigo :)
Hey thanks a lot! I will take a look at it. Some objects I can't touch because I don't want to disrupt the precombines system -- sometimes objects just won't be rendered when using this tweak which is why other suggestions haven't been added. But I will take a look at the APC. I'm currently trying to work out a more elegant solution than what I'm using in this mod, but we'll see if that ever comes to fruition.
I haven't tried this mod, yet, but it looks great from the screenshots. The reason I'm commenting is to perhaps offer a different, more positive, perspective, on objects not loading until up close. The map of the FO4 world isn't big, when I'm playing the game I'm often distracted at how out-of-scale most everything is. The roads are so thin that they barely are wide enough for a car to use them. The houses look teeny weeny, and for the most part they are ridiculously small. The landscape is cluttered with lots of trees that serve to make the world feel more full and alive, but it's in the areas where you can see for a distance, that you begin to see how small the world is. And, by being able to see billboards from a distance, when they're not far away, unfortunately highlights just how small the world is.
I use this with Starlight Drive In LOD Fix nothing more frightening than having a Huge black monolith pop out of nowhere in front of you problems solved, but there is the case of the Drumlin Diner & its signage it has no LOD. : ( & I think it is an offender in this category. (I was looking at Pimp My Diner reminded me of this)
Thx again for this mod its a bit of a game changer I no longer fast travel to Sanctuary I'm happy to approach on foot. : }
I know what you mean with the Diner pop-in. I'll take a look at it when I get the chance. I know that I've tried doing the same with some other signs and billboards but it didn't turn out so well because they were part of a precombine mesh.
I'd be glad to upload another file if I manage to get it working without issue.
Thanks for your consideration, & good luck with this one I have pretty dense foliage so if I walk there I approach from the road so I cant see the Diner beam in on me, pity the Diner wasn't placed a bit closer to Concord or they did it for optimization reasons. (consoles)
This is some great work. You asked for some suggestions so here's some of what i think are the worst pop in objects without LOD. The freeways in downtown boston are particularly bad(around the turnpike and dartmouth professional building theres a freeway that has zero lod that is near a small childrens playground and parking lot.), the boat that hit the bridge on the way to hangmans alley (wreck of the riptide), the other boats that hit some bridges.
