It's a fairly obscure reference to the text game Violet, where you can change the character to a lesbian using the command "heteronormativity OFF", which I just thought was funny.
Well actually it is a legit term (not just a reference to a game), which basically asserts that heterosexuality is the only sexual orientation or only norm. So for example, heteronormativity is why a character whose preference isn't stated is assumed to be straight.
Fact is, its a "norm" because its the default orientation of the majority of human beings. I don't get the LGBT crowd. Im bisexual and I dont consider it 'offensive' that homosexuality/bisexuality are not 'the standard'. f*#@ being normal man. Embrace individuality.
Yes, I'm aware of the use of the word (ex-trustee of a LGBTU charity). BUT I included it as a reference to the other game.
I just thought I'd add this to give a little choice and see if I could make a mod (hah, work in progress). I'm sure it'll be superseded by more capable modders when the GECK for Fallout 4 comes out.
If anyone knows how to change the icons, please let me know!
That's a problematic display of institutionalized, systemic oppression and transmisogynistic toxic masculinity. I'm filing a report on this to the United Nations as I type.
@Soljer13 I don't think their complaint is that bi/homosexuality is not the "standard", I am under the impression that they just want their orientation to be considered unremarkable and not "abnormal".
Heteronormativity is more that gblt people are erased from things like legislation, popular media. They just don't experience exposure in things.
For example direct mailings or say placemarkers at an event for something might automatically say "Mr and Mrs._______" for a plus 1 I've even seen it in restaurant, hotel, travel reservations. It really goes through public life.
If you analyze popular media, gblt people are unrepresented. The expected rate of about 3% is higher than expressed.
Good for you. Fortunately, you don't speak for everyone.
Representation never seems to matter until you *need* it. I needed it. I had no exposure to the people, concepts, and education that helped me figure out who I was. I came very close to taking my own life on several occasions because I felt like there was no one to relate. Fortunately, I started to see people like me represented in media and in real life, and I started to figure things out. Without that representation, I'd be gone.
So don't f*#@ing say that because your anecdotal experience hasn't led you to care for representation that nobody needs it. I'm not sure if that was what you intended to imply, but that's very much how it came across.
Actually, it's not. Unlike in the previous games, the black widow/lady killer perks don't add any unique dialogue, it just increases the success chance in persuasion and damage in combat. You can romance characters of both genders even without the perk.
Instead of trying to add in new perks, or replace existing ones, why not not make cherchez la femme and confirmed bachelor parts of the already existing lady killer/black widow perks? Either add a level inside it, or replace one of the levels with it?
JohnnyH87: That excuses exactly nothing since the dialogue between those romances is gender neutral and works for either. The game felt like a slap in the face to me as a lesbian especially after Obsidian went and fixed Bethesda's original highly heteronormative game, Fallout 3.
Brunhildr, I'm sorry to hear that, I'm Bi myself and I thought it was fine, a bit lacking in depth perhaps but Bethesda games have never been big on romance. But if you have a problem with it, be sure to send your feedback to Bethesda then. The only way to enact change is to make sure the problems don't go unnoticed.
Speaking as a bi man it did'nt really annoy me as this game is set in the 50's we don't know if the LGBT movement happend in the fallout world. Of course post war no one reallys cares as they have more pressing matters, like getting water and not getting killed.
Fallout isn't set in the 50s, it's set in an alternate future with 50s-inspired culture and style. If it was actually the 50s then you wouldn't see many interracial couples or black and white people living in the same neighborhoods either (like you do in pre-war sanctuary)
You can replace the dog handler/Critical banker perk, their effects are literally available to you without the perks. Replace these 2 useless perks with the gay ones, see if it will work.
lol crit banker doesnt work without the perk? i dont play with the dog so i dont konw about that... but crit banker lets you save up to 4 crits, without the perk u can only save 1... replacing such a valuable perk would not be a good idea
How in the world is it useless? The base perk option allows you to store one crit, and continue to fill up your crit meter. That effectively gives you 2 at base level, which is a huge step up from without the perk.
Son would you like some help finding your mommy I think you're lost. Don't worry about him AKST4R anybody who takes a fit and starts saying all your opinions are wrong is clearly too young.

I just want to have a perk similar to the chez la femme perk in NV
Uh, what?

I am in full agreement with you there.
Edit: Just saw how old those comments are. Whoops.
