I have a bunch of mods so it's probably some sort of conflict, but just in case it happens to anyone else, if I select Sarah my computer freezes so badly it can't even bring task manager up and I have to restart it. Jess and Elisabeth work fine. I know it's just odd., but I thought I'd put it in a comment in case someone else had the same problem.
Hello Zangron, thank you for your post. I must say that's really odd, as there really shouldn't be anything that would cause such an issue, as the presets only contain a bunch of vanilla face parameters. Maybe some ranges of parameters cause conflicts with another mod? If you are using a high polygon mesh, maybe the mesh deforms in a way the engine doesn't like it? I don't know.
Hey Immortal, actually that's a nice idea. I might do that at one point. :-)
I'm working on a pretty large sized mod at the moment, though, and designing faces takes a lot of time for me. It's a collection of many underground interior locations, and I think it's going to take a few more months to finish it. So, it might be some time before I get around to create a collection of settler faces.
Nice looking characters. Also, it's nice to see presets that don't require any mods. I'm sure that people with full (or nearly full) Load Orders will appreciate that.
I really grinned while I was reading Elisabeth's Deathclaw story in the Glowing Sea. That's just pure awesomeness. I might steal that idea for a ruthless character. Walking around, listing to Chopin and killing everyone who opposes me. Awesome...
Jess however, is my most favorite of the three. Probably a LITTLE biased here since she is basically like my character, Mila. Everything you said for Jess, applies to Mila. Although, Mila was with the Minutemen since the start and she only "joined" BoS for their resources and technology that could aid her in finding Shaun. But now that the Minutemen are becoming more and more stronger, I feel like Mila will dump the Brotherhood very soon as she doesn't approve of them completely.
But everything else is true. Mila is a hard working women who only wants to help the people of the Commonwealth. She doesn't care too much for her own comfort.
I agree with you that Fallout 4 definitely has a lot of RPG in it. I haven't had a chance to play many RPGs that would allow me to develop my character, so with Fallout 4 I wanted to try that. And I honestly believe that the game gives you a lot of choice. I'm also using an ingame Journal mod in which I write what has happened every single day. Using that Journal, I developed Mila in ways I never expected I would. And for that reason, I will remember her as a character for a long time.
Yeah, the journal! I wish I was using it when I was doing my playthroughs. There were so many things that happened randomly that shaped the stories and made them very special.
Jess was so traumatised in the beginning that her emotion was completely frozen, and she was unable to feel fear or pain (like the condition Jeff Bridges' character had in Fearless). When Prydwen entered the Commonwealth lighting up the night sky and Nick feared for what was to come, Jess basically said to herself, "That's my ticket. The Institute... I'm coming for you." She even walked around wearing Kellogg's outfit in a hope that would draw attentions of the Institute. When she got to the Institute and the truth unfolded for her, that was when the ice melted.
About the random events -
When Jess got banned from the Institute within 10 minutes and reappeared outside, she was greeted by a very heavy rain (thanks to True Storm mod).while her roller coaster emotion hadn't settled yet. Then, in the North End, while she was trying to make it back home, she got ambushed by a group of synths, in a random enemy spawn. It hadn't even been a day, and they have already sent soldiers to kill her. She was a complete wreck when she finally got to the Homeplate.
A few days later, she asked her neighborhood friend Piper to come help her gather some junk because her place was pretty much empty and needed furnishing. Jess was at a complete loss as to what to do with her life at that point, because finding her son meant everything for her. Then worried Piper handed her SugarBomb to cheer her up, and started to talk about why she is a journalist. And that was what inspired Jess to go help the Minutemen, the people she didn't help because she could only see herself at the time.
I know those were random events to the computer, but they made a very special and unique story for Jess in my playthrough, and I don't think this story will happen again even if I played the game the same way. I know your Mila is very different from my Jess even if they have similarities. That's RPG enough for me. :-)
I nearly fell off my chair when Elisabeth's Pip-Boy started blasting Ride of Valkyries as she was readying her quad missile launcher to attack Nuka World. That's also totally random to the computer, but so right. This game has a life of its own, LOL.
Thank you for the reply. It's really fascinating to read about how other people experience the game. Now I feel like I need to share a bit more.
Honestly, while they are quite similar, Jess and Mila are very different. Now that I think about it a bit better, the part about Jess being emotionally frozen doesn't really apply to Mila.
What happened to Mila is that she was in denial from the very beginning. She didn't want to believe what has happened to her. Also, I think she feared the truth. She didn't want to go to Diamond City. Over a month has passed before something clicked and she was ready to go there and find out the truth.
The journal mod I Installed later in my playtrough. In game, 25 days have passed. So I roleplayed that in the story, saying how Mila didn't want to go into her old home.
Quite possibly the biggest surprising turning point for Mila was her slow decent into cruelty. With each passing day, Mila wrestled to continue on her quest. But it was hard, really hard, as in the process she was loosing her humanity. She lost her innocence. Before the Great War, she was a very patient, calm woman and it would take A LOT to piss her off.
And now she was killing Raiders, Ghouls, Supermutants left and right. She was trying to stay on the side of good, on the side of justice, but there were many times when she almost crossed the line. All those kills, especially of her human opponents started to take a toll on her. The biggest break for Mila was when she realized that Kellogg wasn't a monster she thought she was. She ran to Diamond City to the Home Plate. I came up with a similar story you have with Jess and Piper at the Home Plate.
Then there was another breaking point when Mila realized how miserable she was without a proper home. Currently, she lives in a small shack in Sanctuary. Better said, she only stores her personal things in that shack. She is so busy running around the Commonwealth that she doesn't even go there that often. But when she does, it's a bitter reminder of the fact that she doesn't have a home.
And this is when the companions came into play. Piper, Nick and Curie. They have helped Mila in their own ways and things are starting to look up for her. Mila has arrived at the point where she needs to travel to the Glowing Sea to find Virgil. But she realized that she needs a break. So now, she is starting to build the settlements she controls. And the first thing she is going to do is build herself a proper home.
About the random events. I couldn't agree with you more! I also had a ton of random events that just felt like they NEEDED to happen RIGHT at THAT MOMENT. And I was really happy to incorporate all those events into Mila's story. And that's how she grew and is still growing as a character.
Sorry for the wall of text (these are my specialty ), but I really felt compelled to write a bit more about my adventures in Fallout 4.
Ah, so Piper told Mila that knowing the truth is the best thing even if it hurts and encouraged her to face it, then?:-) And Mila's home situation is exactly what Jess went through, too - Jess only had a bed, a bench for lifting weight, and a few boxes until that point. I think it is great that the quest line gives you a moment for emotional reset like this - the sole surviver was basically thrown into a situation he/she wasn't ready for.
Honestly, I'm very happy that you are posting back with your story of Mila. I think we all play RPGs because we want to create stories, and I've been pretty much dying to talk about my Jess playthrough also, LOL.
I think I've finally found a storyline for Sarah : A gen 3 synth who was given a partial memory of Shaun's mother, designed to seek the help from the enemies of the Institute and then come "home". Then she one day meets DiMA, and starts questioning who she is.... I think that would make a great storyline for the Railroad playthrough. "What if the Sole Surviver was a synth?" theories obviously have some holes, but that's an interesting theme, I think.
I'm really glad you are enjoying my posts on Mila! Let me clear up some things for you.
Piper didn't have to do anything with the truth Mila was seeking. Mila realized on her own that she needed to seek the truth and find out what happened to Shaun. When she exited the Vault, she was overwhelmed. A new, strange world full of dangers. Mila thought that she should go to Diamond City only when she felt like she was 100% ready. Unfortunately, once she arrived at Diamond City, everything went downhill for her. She became obsessed. She became reckless. The only thing on her mind was to find Shaun.
The conversation between Mila and Piper in the Home Plate happened right after Mila experienced Kellogg's memories. What exactly they talked about, I forgot. I need to re-read my log entries to remember. But I'm pretty sure that Mila was talking about how much pressure she is under and the fact that she doesn't have a home. I think that they were talking about Mila switching her priorities and slowing it down a little.
I like to write, so the conversation between Piper and Mila will be released as a short story named "Changes." I really need to find time to write that thing. The good thing about me keeping a journal is that if I really like a certain event or part of Mila's story, I can go back to my entries and turn them into a proper short story that I can then post online for people to enjoy (as much as it can be enjoyed, because my writing isn't super great ).
Your idea for Sarah definitely sounds interesting. I'm not sure if I would ever be able to come up with something like that. I'm definitely curious to read more of her story if you decide to post it anywhere.
LordMJ - wouldn't it be cool if there was a FO4 "fan fiction" section on Nexus? Not lore stuff, or theories, but stories experienced from the characters' point of views? Like you said, I too find it fascinating to see how others interpret the same game, and enjoy reading others' stories, also. We can't be the only ones who want to share and exchange stories, lol.
I'm not much of a writer, either, but I think I'm going to try my hand at writing Sarah's story from my current playthrough. It will be a very long term project, but I think this is going to be a lot fun. I just wrote the intro and started on the first chapter. Hopefully I can keep it up. :-p
You are most welcome! And I'm really happy to hear you are starting to write Sarah's story. Can't wait to read it.
One thing I've learned about writing is to not worry. Just write, put your heart in it and I'm sure you will find people who will enjoy your work.
I do think that Nexus would really benefit from having a section for fan fiction. I'm sure that there are a lot of passionate people like us that would like to share their stories. But I don't think that will ever happen. So I will just post my works on Deviantart and direct Nexus users there.
Bree van der Kamp - tidying up the Commonwealth and collecting empty wine bottles one settlement at a time! There's definitely a fun build you could do for her - pistols, gun nut, the booze one, intimidation, fortune finder, anything food related. I'd keep her off the Jet though, cos she was vehemently anti-drugs (wine obviously doesn't count...). Definitely have to side with the Institute, partly for political reasons, mostly because they keep everything so sparkly clean. Nice work, Jess is especially good; realistic, attractive without being too idealized, a bit of character to her face, and seems to suit the voice.
Well, I didn't do the Bree idea all the way, but that was an interesting starting point for developing Elisabeth's personality, LOL. Elisabeth was definitely fun to play, and in the end I could actually sympathize with a lot of the choices she made, which seemed like the "evil" choices in other playthroughs.
The playthrough with Jess was my favorite one for sure. She was a sort of character who lifted weights everyday after waking up, before going out on quests. Way too hard on herself, very kind to others.
Happy to report I've started a new game with Jess and have completely fallen for her. She's unremittingly positive despite everything, extremely perceptive and agile, quite lucky and likeable but weak as a kitten and thick as two short planks (for now, gonna build up her Specials), and loves cosplay (cos I have a bunch of fun mods I need to get some use out of). She's very much inspired by Kimmy Schmidt (if you know her) or will be once I've got her strength up. I kept her appearance the same, apart from removing the subtle blemishes which I suspect were on the base face you used (they're not really noticeable but I wanted her to be perfect). She'll probably go ginger too once she finds the time to visit a hairdresser. Gonna have to go with the Minutemen to stay in character - not the most exciting but she'll obviously want to avoid too much mass murder...
One other thing, and I'm not 100% sure it's from your savegame but might be - the item names are sometimes in French. It's no big cos 1) Educational and 2) changes to English when you mod the items (presumably due to me using AWKCR and/or VIS). If that's the case might be worth mentioning that in the description. Anyway, sorry to go on, just thought you might like to know someone is making use of your lovely work.
I am indeed playing in French (I use RPGs to study the language), and I suspect at least the vault suit is in French as it is already in the inventory? Or is it everything placed in Vault 111 (which would mean everything in the loaded cell gets renamed, like the coffee cups, etc.)?
I am very sorry about this - didn't think that sort of thing would happen! The way the game works, the IDs used are common for all languages, so that's the reason when you use the workbench the name would revert, I think.
I am going to mention it on the front page and recommend to use Face Ripper to transfer the face data to the local save. Thank you very much for catching it!
I still haven't watched Kimmy Schmidt, I've been meaning to. Looked like a good one. :-)
About the blemishes - I wanted Jess to be not-so-perfect, so I've left in some imperfections such as red nose and things on her cheek on purpose. Sarah on the other hand has no imperfections, unless I've missed something.
Off the top of my head - yes, the vault suit she was already wearing, her wedding ring (but not Nate's) and the 10mm pistol from the desk. In Concord Museum I got a couple of (I think) raider armour piece drops in French. Really isn't a problem for me, happy to learn too, since my schoolboy French c'est terrible (see, I'm improving already!)
Thank you for being so positive about this. I wish I'd known better before making this public. :/
As I've said, the IDs being used by in-game objects are constant across all languages, so you should have no problem with functioning of the game itself. I have mixed English mods into French game without no problem, also. I'm very sorry about the inconvenience.
I hope your Kimmy Schmidt build will be an enjoyable one. I think for my Sarah I'll go with "These violent delights have violent ends" storyline, with a pistol and hand-to-hand combat stealth build, for Ghost in the Shell theme.

But I'm okay playing as myself :)
