I never liked how Dogmeat was the only dog that looked like a shepherd. There's pitbulls, mongrels that kind of look like emaciated pitbulls, mutant hounds that look like buffed up pitbulls - and then there's Dogmeat. In the past, I 'fixed' that by downloading a mod that would make Dogmeat look like a pitbull.
This time, I fixed it by changing the pitbulls to look like Dogmeat. Personally, I think it's almost lore-friendly. I mean, scrawny humans can become super mutants and emaciated ghouls, so why wouldn't a shepherd be able to make similar changes? And since Dogmeat is no longer the only one looking like he does, maybe there's a wild pack of post-war shepherds out there, somewhere. (Probably not - at least, I certainly didn't add them.)
I used Bellyache's textures for variants, so rather than find brown & black pitbulls you should find black & white shepherds.
Installation:
Pick one of the downloadable files and use your mod manager of choice to do the heavy lifting. As far as I know, both MO2 & NMM's beta version support .esl files. Alternatively, manually download the archive and extract it to your Data folder. Don't forget to add the mod to your plugins.txt if you chose to manually install the .esl version.
Don't want black & white dogs? You can replace the textures in Textures/Actors/Dogmeat/Raiderdog1 & Raiderdog2 with your favourite Dogmeat textures.
Credits:
Bellyache for the amazing retextures.
