technically speaking, dogmeats child is from fo3, and dogmeat is originally from fo2. he has nothing to do with the people preston garvey or the minutemen.
I'm all for having options, and this is a pretty minor nitpick. but if you didn't know, Dogmeat already has a bit of a backstory. He was traveling with the Minutemen, and Mama Murphy sent him off toward Sanctuary because she 'saw' that he'd be able to find help there. She'll tell you about this depending on the dialog choices you pick when you first meet them in the Museum of Freedom.
This would be really helpful for characters who skip over the Concord stuff early on in the game though, because you won't be getting this explanation from Mama Murphy, and it provides a bit of an explanation for a domesticated dog being there.
I'm already well past recruiting Dogmeat with my current character, so I haven't tried this yet, but I'll probably be checking it out with my next "ignore the Minutemen until the end of the game" character.
Dogmeat from FO3 and Dogmeat from FO4 aren't even the same breed of dog. Dogmeat in 3 is an Australian Cattle Dog, and Dogmeat in 4 is a German Shepherd.
Well it breaks the storyline a bit for me.. if you talk to mama in concord before saving her, she tells you that she sent dogmeat out into the commonwealth to find help... sooo actually dogmeat allready had an "owner" or as she says "dogmeat is his own man"
What Mama Murphy means is Dogmeat is his own dog. He picks and chooses whom he attaches himself to. Been that way for all 4 Fallout games . The entire series. So , to me , Dogmeat could have just as well traveled with a scavenger knowing full well they would meet up with the Lone Wanderer eventually
I guess you probably dont remember the old TV Series "Lassie" . If I had my guess , that is the model for Dogmeat in the series.
dogmeat has been in all the fallouts i have ever played. i believe it was inspired by a boy and his dog. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szdWp6epMSs).
As others have said he accompanied Mama Murphy for awhile plus he's helped Nick on a few cases. I think a better route would be to have the NPC with him say, "Thanks for helping out. That was close. If you and this dog hadn't come along I'd have been a goner for sure. It's just too bad I'm having enough trouble feeding myself otherwise I'd take him. I know! You look pretty healthy and tough, too. Why don't you keep him? He's good in a fight plus he seems to like you."
Option 1: I'm sorry. I need to find my son and don't have time to take care of a dog. Option 2: I could but I'm going to need some currency to buy extra food from traders. Option 3: What if he belongs to someone? Option 4: That sounds like a good idea. I'll take him. Are you going to be OK?
Reply 1: ...I understand. I wish you luck. Come on, boy. (NPC leaves) Reply 2 Well...alright. I don't have much but do take care of him, OK? (NPC gives money) Reply 3: You can take him with you and look around. If they're serious about finding him I'm sure you'll come across them. Try down in Concord. Just be careful. That's raider territory. I heard a lot of shooting coming from that direction. Hope whoever owned him didn't get caught in a firefight. Reply 4: Yeah. I'll be fine. Thanks for looking after him. Just be careful out there. Especially in Concord. That's raider territory. I would have scavenged there for some supplies but I'm not as tough in a fight as I used to be. You might have better luck especially with your dog by your side.
After whichever reply you could have the npc say, "Well...guess that's that then. Good luck, dog. Take care of your new friend, OK?"
This works as it leaves room for Mama Murphy's having sent Dogmeat to the Red Rocket and helps give the player an earlier interaction to connect with the Commonwealth's NPC's. Let me know what you think.
