"A Profile of Nate & Nora" by Oxhorn, refers to a mod that 'restores' a terminal that was originally in their home... There is a mod, according to him, that "Restored Cut Sanctuary Terminals," that gives a lot more about their default backstory.  "Corsino Silva," that's the actual father (when I write the backstory for my own character - using a Journaling mod), a name derived from the terminal... a case Nora was working on around the time the bombs fell.

In the 1950s (that's the cultural  mindset/style of the game), adultery was actually illegal, even punishable by jail time and large fines, but was overturned nearly everywhere by the 1960s.  Anyway, Nora wanted to get back into the world of law and order, and was going to take a pro-bono case to defend a young black man falsely accused of a crime.  For a wife in those days to have an affair, get pregnant by a man of color especially, while her husband (a decorated war hero) was away serving his country - oh the scandal! Her law career, and reputation in general, would be ruined.  But if Nate remained silent, did not make an accusation or bring public charges, people might just ignore it (other children and gossips would not of course), Nate would be humiliated and mocked behind his back for choosing to go along.

For immersion, my mind has to justify the kid's appearance, so I assume she knew this young man (Corsino) previously, and had an affair with him.  She had to cover it up, hoping Nate was either too stupid to notice, or that her fair skin (default) would make the child light enough to pass for Nates(?); or maybe Nate just accepts the responsibility like a good little soldier.

When people go away to war for months, years at a time, spouses left behind will often stray. A way to cover up having an unwanted pregnancy, in the days when abortion was mostly illegal, was with cover-up sex - pregnant with some other guy's baby, have 'a special night' with your husband/bf, so you can make him believe he was the one who did the deed (without a paternity test who will know?).

Will admit, my first wife cheated on me, got pregnant by another man, and I have a lot of bitterness about it (divorced her and never spoke to her again, moved 3000+ miles and cut all ties with everyone), so it is the adultery part that is irritating - but the black baby is a dead giveaway.

Honestly, think Bethesda is intentionally, if back-handedly, pushing an agenda with the default character - demeaning Nate, subtle dig at him (his kind as it were).

In the backstory I make - he played along, while quietly seeking out legal advice - an ex-military buddy, former JAG officer who lives in Boston, was looking into it, gathering evidence, and finds she's still having an affair with Corsino, has even helped him get a room in Concord (for work purposes mind you).  Nate plans on using leverage of evidence to make a clean but quiet break, feigning stupidity until then.  Before his plans come to fruition, the bombs drop.   This justifies the fact he tears-down everything in his house, that he does not perhaps doggedly march on in a direct unwavering line toward Kellogg and the Institute.  He grew up with Nora, loved her, so he would still want to avenge her, still it would be horrific to watch her die, and he might be worried about the child -- it's not Shaun's fault what happened, he's a cute kid.  I would want to find out what happened to any child who was kidnapped by people in hazmat suits, worried about what was done/being-done to the baby (any baby).  That the Institute does such things to many people, the slaughter at University Point for instance, is justification for their destruction and Nate's utter disdain of them.  Yet, why go down all kinds of rabbit holes in pursuit of his wife's killer and son's kidnappers - maybe they are not as precious to him as he puts on, for cause.

Finding this mod today, means I no  longer have to justify Bethesda's little "joke," with an elaborate backstory.

It's strange that, despite Shaun seemingly being black as a baby, he would become whatever ethnic variety the sole survivor was in adulthood. The whole baby color thing was definitely a bug. I still think there should be a Native American option for baby Shaun. But, the "Hispanic" option will probably work well enough for that.

How does this bother anyone? Wow, Like you only see the baby for like 5 seconds in the game before the bomb goes off? Am I missing something? lol. I would like to see a mod where you can walk around with your baby out in the wasteland, you never see any wasteland mothers, is sad!

    LMAO! Good one!

Would be even better if you could make the change automatic based on your character's skin color. Though I'd think that would be pretty tough. Maybe start with finding the script that alters the appearance of Adult Shaun or Kid Shaun... Just an idea. Since Baby Shaun is only seen for a few minutes, it may not even be worth it.

I've started a black sole survivor before and it does make baby Shaun black. So there IS coding for it in the game, it just forgets to include being able to make Shaun white I guess..

THANK YOU! Broke my immersion too. I have played multiple different racial characters and baby shaun always stayed the same. I never understood why!
