Please note that any ESL file will not work in your game if it is not at least Version 1.10.20.

So do not try to get them to work in game if you are below that due to not wanting to even waste the bandwidth of downloading the Creation Club update.

Even if the Creation Club is a thing, I still would get it due to ESL files now being a thing alone. Screw that 255 Mod Limit!

I have a problem with ESL’s becoming Un-selected in plugins.text i.e. no * to the left. This happens if I add anything else to my load order after the ESL has been working fine. I then get the missing mod when I start the game.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    I am using NMM 0.63.14

      That might be your problem.

ESL support with NMM started with Version 0.63.17 (this is the version that I use currently). So if you edited your plugins.txt list with active (*) ESLs then went into NMM, NMM wouldn't recognize the ESL plugins that you just manually added resulting in NMM removing them from being active. So if you don't want to mess with NMM or Vortex and do everything manually, just never turn them on (I just assume that you still are using NMM for something because you mentioned your version of it).

I suppose there is no way to get NMM Version 0.63.17+? Vortex seems to have a few problems which I want to wait until resolved before installing.

I remember getting my version on GetHub. That was long ago though. I suggest looking around on google, there has to be someone out there that uploaded it for those of us that prefer NMM to Vortex still.

While using Vortex any Mod that is an ESL file shows up in my load order and counts towards the 255 limit... So for people who use Vortex but want to use ESL mods.. Are we supposed to disable the ESL plugin on the plugins page and then leave the mod activated on the mod list page? Is that how to properly do it or once in-game do I have to activate the ESL from the in game fallout 4 mod load order menu?

In the older NMM Versions you couldn't even see an ESL File in the Plugins of NMM. So if you can see the ESL Files in NMM under Plugins then you have a good version of it. The ESL Files in NMM are located near the top of the Plugins list right under the ESM Files that you have.

ESL Files replace ESP Files so make sure that when you enable an ESL File to disable the corresponding ESP File in NMM as well. Otherwise it might be a NMM problem itself in that it recognizes that there are to many plugins... in that case go to your games Data Folder and delete the ESP Files that you have ESL equivalents of, doing this will remove the ESP Files completely from NMM Plugins List.

That is strange... I don't have that many mods active in my game. You might want to try to find someone that does and see if they have a similar problem with NMM and ESL Files, because I am not sure myself I wish I knew though.
