UPDATE v1.1 - fixed a bug that caused the folder name to be always "auto_backup_executable/Fallout4.exe_for_F4SE_0.5.0" regardless of F4SE runtime version
Make sure you update the mod before you later update your game to 1.10.26 and F4SE to its new version! (Or failing to do that just delete all the previous backup folders and you're good to go.)
DISCLAIMER yes, I know there's a way to use Steam in offline mode. yes, I know it's possible to turn off auto-update. yes, I know that you can backup your exe files manually.
yet there are always users who forgot to do any of those. (sometimes me included.) this mod is for them.
and yes, I know that new updates usually change more than just Fallout4.exe. this tool is not about rolling back entirely. it's about having an exe F4SE might still work with. if you have a problem with that just keep in mind that it's impossible to forsee what a new update will change and since I'm obviously not making a tool that backs up your whole game library during runtime, having this tool around, and being sure at least your exe is safe is a cup half empty/full situation I believe.
Although sort of mentioned, just to expand on the previous comment.
Concerning Fallout 4 and using new and old versions of the EXE files. You can not use the OLD EXE and use the NEW Fallout4.esm file, any of the new Creation Club content, or any of the DLC changed for the update. This includes any mod saved with the new CK not just official files.
If you revert to the OLD EXE you MUST use OLD plugins. Any plugin made for the NEW version will instantly crash your game when using the OLD EXE.
This is basically the concept of backward not forward compatibility.
For anybody who accidentally updated their game to the "next gen" version and broke all their mods, using the Auto-Backup alone won't help make them playable again. This is because, as said in Sharlikran's pinned comment, the Fallout.esm and such have been updated too.
Just stumbled upon this mod, i haven't installed it yet but i'm pretty sure i'll have to when the new next-gen update will come. What do you all think? Also is there a way to simply turn off steam auto- updates?
Really glad i found this mod last night, with this new update coming and 3-400 mods i have something would surely go wrong. i backed up my .esm, turned auto updates off on steam and used this mod to back up the exe. i hope i did everything right and can continue playing when the update arrives. thanks CDante!
FO4 is getting updated again in the near future and it's a major engine update that is likely going to break everything, so yes, this is still mandatory to have in your load order.
I sure hope folks are coming back to this mod with an update looming on the horizon. I've already made a copy of my entire fallout folder and even my ini folder. I have a perfect working load order with 219 mods running. I do not want to suffer what I know will be the doom of at least 50% of those mods.
I followed the video exactly and now my game is broken. F4SE_loader is missing and whenever i try to launch the game from the f4se_launcher.exe that i created a desktop shortcut for, there's an error message that tells me I have renamed f4se_loader and I have not specified the runtime.
Fallout 4 may auto-update when you "CLOSE" it after starting it with F4SE.

I just recently started a new game after not having played FO4 for several months. My exe is Version 1.10.138 and I'm still using the matching F4SE for that version. When I closed the game, steam started to download the update even though it's set to "Only update at launch" and I only start the game with F4SE after I've started steam. Steam doesn't even show the game is running. Luckily my Cable Modem is within arms reach and I quickly unplugged the cat6 cable.
Vortex is showing 171 plugins and I like the way my game runs and I just don't want it to change it so, I don't plan on ever updating it.
So now, before starting FO4 I have to restart Steam in offline mode (which is a total lie as it will still auto-update your games this way) and then using a 3rd party program (I use WFC, the pre-malwarebytes version 5.3.1.0) I block everything to do with steam in my firewall. (You can't block steam with the built in Windows Firewall alone. You can try, new rules allowing and overriding your block rules will be automatically created the next time you start steam, neat huh?)

Please refer to the comment by Destructionares on the thread for F4SE on how to roll back properly.
