The instructions are pretty easy to follow for me.
I've already made three custom name plates.

I personally used photoshop to make my custom name plates.

Here is a step by step, more detailed tutorial for those who need help still and use photoshop.

First of all, get the loose files version. That is key for the correct folders to appear.
Also get the miscellaneous file called, nameplate customization. It has the base file used for the custom nameplate file.

Photoshop should come with the option to save things as Targa [.tga] files.

Next, you want to extract the miscellaneous folder in the area you keep your mod zip files, if you have a specific area for it.
Once this is extracted, go into the Tag_1_Replacer folder within the folder you just extracted.

Open the file Tag_1-1.tga with photoshop.

As mentioned in the tutorial supplied. If you want the same kind of writing as the other tags for your custom tag, you need to download the font file from the link supplied in the tutorial given.
I looked on google for a tutorial on how to add custom fonts to photoshop, so do that, it's pretty easy to follow.

Here is a link for multiple windows types - https://www.adobe.com/products/type/install-instructions.html
I believe windows 10 works much the same as 7 and 8. I haven't added a font for a while though.

Once you have the font and the file opened, add a text box and write your characters name in the empty section, underneath where it says N7R.

Font size 45 seems to fit quite nicely into the image box provided. You can use the arrow keys to adjust the text just so also.
To do this, select the move tool and move the text into place, then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to adjust it better.

Save your file as Targa [.tga] in whatever folder you want to save it, don't overwrite the base file you edited though, you'll need it for new character name.

What I did for mine, was save the file as a Targa [.tga] with the same name as the base file, which was Tag_1-1 but I added a name in [Name Here] after the base name, to keep track of things.
Next, you want to create a new folder. I named this folder after the character I was currently using.

Now comes the more complicated part. You are going to have to download an addon if you have photoshop.
    This one - http://gametechdev.github.io/Intel-Texture-Works-Plugin/

Close photoshop and follow the instructions on how to install the plugin.
Once the plugin is installed, open your .tga file and you should now be able to save it as a .dds file.

When you are saving it as a .dds file, look at where it says texture type, and change it to color + alpha.
Next, where it says Compression, select BC3 8bpp (Linear) and underneath it'll say it is also known as DTX5, which is what you want according to the supplied tutorial.
Now go down to where it says Mip Maps and make sure it's set to Auto Generate.

Alternatively, you could always look online for a site that will let you convert your .tga files to .dds files.

You then copy your new .dds file into the folder mentioned in the tutorial provided.
You follow the instructions to replace the old file and get into your game.

Go to a workbench and add a name tag to your gun, if you already have a game with the gun.
Add the nameplate for player and you should be able to see if it worked or not.

I hope this helps people out some more.
I recently got back into fallout 4 with a new character, so needed to come back to this. c:

I will try to update the documentation in the next few days. Been pretty tight on time lately. If I can't get a video made I will add some images to show the steps.

Love this mod already, but these nameplate instructions are a joke. Here's why:

    1. The file in the nameplate rar is a .tga not .dds, and photoshop is the only image editing program I know how to use. And I went to school for two years to use it. A total beginner is gonna have a VERY tough time following these instructions through sheer text. I could write meticulously detailed instructions in how to do the photoshop edit, however. My version of Photoshop (2014) does not support .dds files without special plugins. It can handle .tga files by default. I already successfully edited the .tga file in the rar, though I'm unsure of the compression since the instructions are for .dds not .tgaAnd that brings me to my second problem: I don't know where to PUT the damn thing to test it because the directory in the instructions is flat out wrong (unless my mod manager does weird things, which could be the case)

    2. I'm assuming that the file path changes depending on how you install mods, if not, the path "Data\Textures\Weapons\N7R\ACR-W17\ACR-W17_Tags" Mentioned in the instructions is flat out wrong. There is no "Textures" folder in the mod. There is a "Materials" folder, which is where the textures would be, but there is no "Tags" folder. The actual path is "ACR-W17\Materials\Weapons\N7R\ACR-W17" For me. No "tags" folder in here to be found. Just "attatchments," "camos," "camos bonus," and "prestige."There are .NIF files for the nameplate where all the meshes are, but those weren't mentioned in the instructions either.

    Still loving this mod though.

P.S. I feel like you could do with spawning a BIT less ammo for it outside the vault. 900 bullets is noice and all, but it makes you OP as hell in the first parts of the game where ammo and resources are supposed to be scarce. And if you're late game just coming to pick it up, you're gonna have PLENTY of ammo already.

DM me if you want me to write those photoshop instructions once you update things.

Yeah...completely lost with these instructions, wrong file type, compression what? I can add my name via Photoshop but after that im lost. A Tutorial please, the instructions for getting rid if the idle animations were just as vague.

I concur. The instructions in the RAR don't line up with the content of the RAR. for starters it's a .tga not .dds file. Second, define "image editor of choice." I wager most of us aren't familiar with what you mean by that.
