Would be cool if you could also change it so it scales off Heavy Gunner instead of Rifleman/Commando. Heavy builds are really lacking in automatic weapons since the Minigun is super weak and the Gatling Laser is super late-game.
You know what, there is an assault rifle mod which does that - I stumbled upon it just last week, but I can't now remember which one. Just search for "Assault Rifle" like I did - an awful lot of mods.
How does this change affect the overall DPS? Since it lowers the fire rate but raises the base damage... Although i'm certain this'll at least make it FEEL different from the Handmade rifle, right now it feels incredibly similar.
I can say with some certainty that the devs were inspired pretty directly by this heavy SOB. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3XTPWnV2rw The MG-08/15. Features include: Water jacket!, Belt Drum!, Shoulder stock!, Pistol Grip!, conical flash suppressor!. Quite the suspiciously familiar feature list. Anyway, Beth should have given everyone the Homemade rifle for free and renamed and re chambered the Assault rifle when they made Nuka World. Good thing there are modders to fix their mistakes! Cheers!
I never thought of the assault rifle as having a water-cooled jacket due to the obvious weight problem but instead saw it as an air-cooled shroud like with the Lewis gun. That too was considerably bulky, but can and has been fired off the shoulder with relative ease like modern assault rifles.
Who know why they decided to call it an assault rifle when it's called a machine gun in the game files, plus the aim data clearly better suits full auto (it's way overcompensated for semiauto). It seems to me like they decided late to release the actual assault rifle with Nuka World and just renamed the machine gun.
Anyway, I share your thinking and made my own mod in the same spirit, but I even got rid of the semiautomatic receivers altogether. It's a machine gun after all! I also added a .308 option, increased the weight of the water cooled barrels, and made it a heavy weapon.
I think you should make the .308 the standard caliber. Set the damage and recoil to .308 standards (ie; whatever feels right). Switching to 5.56 lowers the recoil and damage, switching to .50 ups the damage and recoil.
Perhaps using power armor adds stabilization and reduces recoil. Maybe a similar feature for characters with high strength. Maybe low strength increases recoil and sway. This would add reason for a person to use power armor. A version chambered in 5.56 and wielded by a character in power armor should have almost no recoil unless you rip a long burst.
Maybe the .308 and .50 versions are heavy guns and the 5.56 is a regular rifle.
I'm probably asking too much. I just like this idea.
it's actually not a lesson in terrible weapon design, because this was always supposed to be a machine gun from its very conception. https://staticdelivery.nexusmods.com/mods/1151/images/22043-1-1487091714.png
