I really thought he was Sean when I first played. I shot Father without talking to him because I thought Preston was going to be my son. I didn't look at news or memes before my first playthrough, because I didn't want to spoil it. My wife in Sanctuary even looked just like Preston.
I think the game would be better if he were really your kid. At least you would have had a good kid instead of an evil one.

I saw an interview with the creator guy and he said the kid and the grown up was supposed to look like the two people in the bathroom mixed together. And Preston really looked that way for me. That's why I didn't read any news or look at memes. I thought Preston was going to look different in every picture I saw and spoil the plot.
Since the game has pastor vestements, I would have expected Father Preston to be wearing one. That, or a long white beard, red jacket and red pointy hat, riding a red-nosed reindeer...
