The reason why Beth made Nora into a lawyer is a simple one. They are both canon characters in the Fallout universe. See, in the previous games, you had only one Vault Dweller, only one The Chosen One, only one Lone Wanderer and only one Courier. Whatever choice you've made - male/female - their counterpart simply didn't exist. But in FO4, both Nate & Nora are part of the Fallout world. Sure your spouse is being killed in the Vault, but that doesn't remove them from existence. And now for the reason behind the change. It would be weird if both parents of young Shaun were war veterans, so one was kept, the other was changed to a different occupation. That's the only reason there is. You sure can have a family, where both married people do the same thing in life, but it's still pretty uncommon and may seem weird in the eyes of their neighbours for example. It's clear, that Bethesda planned for both Sole Survivors to be the same (evidenced by the female SS lines being hidden, but still coded into the game/not removed completely nontheless), but the way they decided the game (and more precisely the story) to go, they had to make changes. So from story telling point Nora has to be different than her husband, despite what the player's choise is. If they simply switched genders (like in previous games), then having the player always be the war veteran and their spouse always be the lawyer regardless of the chosen sex, there would be no complains. But they didn't do that, they coded the sex change in completely taking over a somewhat pre-made character with every their quirk and trait and their own backstory, you choose between Nate and Nora the way they both are, you don't simply gender-swap, you are either Nate or Nora with a complete background included.
Why couldn't they both be veterans? Plenty of soldiers serve in the same units and marry one another after getting out of the military or transferring units (it's obviously frowned upon while still on duty)
Nothing else in the game matters whether its 1 veteran and 1 lawyer or 2 veterans, and I don't think it really adds anything to have them have entirely different jobs and not both be veterans. If anything, as the mod author states, it makes more sense if both are veterans since Nora knows how to operate military equipment and keep cool under fire like a pro right out of the cryo pod.
I'm not saying that the mod is wrong, or bad, or anything, just that the reason behind Bethesda's decision is evident. They simply wanted to make them different from each other. Two war veterans would be too much similar, or simply just gender swapped, copy pasted. Having a veteran and a lawyer makes sense to me.
There is no reason why Nora can't be a veteran AND a lawyer. In fact, Courtenay Taylor was interviewed about how she prepared for the role and she based her character on an actual female veteran friend of hers who was/is a "JAG" lawyer aka "Judge Advocate."
Mines an Ex Sniper and when she finds out the Enclave are still around thanks to the America Rising mod she jumps at the chance to set the country back on the right path.
I want to like this mod. Bethesda changing the female SS from a solider to a civilian feels almost disrespectful. There's nothing wrong with Nate and Nora being a military couple; that makes more sense than a lawyer being able to use power armor and mow down raiders.
Unfortunately, this mod seems to make a lot of NPCs refer to a female SS as male, even in contexts that have nothing to do with the military. In other words: This mod isn't just using military lines, where the only lines it has to work with are ones that call the SS male. X6-88 (for example) sometimes calls the female SS "sir". In short: This mod is fixing one immersion problem by creating another.
Folks, is that your experience with this mod? Have you had this same problem?
probably a little too late but x6 calling the female player sir or straight up saying “should anything happen to this man” when switching companions happens without this mod. not sure if its caused by another one but i think it happened when i played vanilla on ps4 too.
Coming in a little bit later on this Already Late reply, but just today I had a bunch of raiders switch back and forth a couple of times while referring to my Sole Survivor's gender.
I have found one part that isn't changed, when you first encounter the railroad, the war veteran response referencing the oath of enlistment is still only available to a male sole survivor.
If I could ask one minor thing. For the Officer Version, could you please make Nate, at least the rank of Major, (0-4), or preferably a Lt. Col. (0-5) on his Discharge Papers for the Living Room. As former Military myself; I can confirm that the Army would "Frown" upon a Staff Sergeant being Married to an officer. And with the reference being made that he "Retired" from the military It stands to reason that he would have made at least Lt. Col. before he did so.
I tried to edit the files you provided but I couldn't seem to get it to work. So I would really appreciate it if you could help.
It's not ideal but if Nate was 11Bravo and Nora was JAG, she could have made the jump to officer. If they were already married not much the military would do about it since they were both NCOs when they got married.
Something that would feel appropriate as a compromise option, at least to me - Nora was part of the Judge Advocate General's Corps, aka the Judicial branch of the US Armed Forces. Which allows her to have been a military lawyer, possibly with a background in the infantry (where she might have met Nate?) - thus, she can viably be a lawyer and veteran.

My wife and I are both Marine veterans, perfect example of what you're referring to.

That good ol' Bethesda jank!

Hope you can fix this!

Thank you for the Nice Mod.
I imagine they got married before joining, or perhaps one joined before and the other after they were married.
