I agree. It does seem the most appropriate weapon.
It's tricky though, because I think that'll make the basic machine gun turret one of the harder ones to build. The Assault Rifle is basically non-existent at low levels, it only starts appearing around the level 30 range, if I recall correctly. Laser Rifles are a lot easier to find (they spawn even at level 1), so Laser Turrets would actually be a lot easier to build, assuming you have the Science perk.
Though I agree an assault rifle is the most logical by application and caliber, wouldn't a 10mm pistol (or a combat rifle) be more logical by when they come available? You can make both automatic after all.
It could even be possible to have a different weapon required for each rank in turret. Or say 10mm for Mark 1-2, Combat rifle for Mark 3-4 and son on. Just an idea.
I love the idea for the mod, but I'm going to have to track for now (I do not trust myself not to accidentally scrap my fave weapon for a turret, and not to do so repeatedly, as I'm very much the absent minded professor type).
I would like to suggest a work-around, though, for the problem:
Make a new, unique type of scrap that each weapon can be scrapped for. Missile Launchers, for example, can scrap for the usual plus a Missile Guidance Chip. Laser Rifles can scrap for the usual plus a Laser Beam Fresnel Lens. You get the idea here.
Then make those unique items a requirement for crafting the related turret.
This would probably be a decent amount of work, but it would be worth it. And for hardcore/survival mode? Turrets should require (and probably should, any way) schematics. *nod self*
