Correct me if I'm wrong... "Realistic" "Gas Mask" "Radiation" - as far as I know gas =/= radiation. 'Realistically' you can have 10 feet of lead around your head and still be radiated through your body. But it's a good little mod to make the masks more useful. Because sadly as PaddyGarcia said ... 'realistic' is more akin to boring than entertaining or fun in a game. The best realistic fallout mod for fallout would sadly be; bombs fell, nuclear fallout, all life dies, the end. Are you my mummy?

really though, I think charisma should gain a point.

"You have to shout to be heard by people even a few feet from you"
Really? Than MCU must be a real crap. I have old MP4 polish gasmask, and it has special voice membrane so you can even whistle silently or whisper and people still hear you.
"Because wearing a gas mask SUCKS."
Depending on your preference. I like wearing gasmasks. Once there was power surge and whole neighbourhood went black. I put on my gasmask and started patrolling the streets, running around, checking abandoned houses. It lasted an hour or more and I never took the mask off.
"your lenses fog up and make it difficult for you to see anything more than blurry shapes"
Than use some good antifog like McNett Op Drops.

You're right about realism, but the radiation in Fallout is inherently unrealistic. Radioactive water, which is more dangerous to stand in than to drink?
And if you think gas masks are unrealistic, check out the 5 pound Hazmat Suit which stops just about all radiation. (Not to mention RadAway.)

But... a more realistic radiation system would be not much fun - you'd just gradually get sick and die a slow, boring death. In Fallout physics, radiation makes scorpions gigantic, not sterile or sick. It makes tomatoes and potatoes interbreed. It makes ghouls rot forever without dying, and so on.

In my game I made the hazmat suit weigh 35lbs so you couldn't just keep one folded up in your pocket, but it's still magically resistant. And I use a gas mask mod that gives gas masks MORE rad resistance, plus some armor, to make carrying a gas mask worthwhile - otherwise they're just heavy costume accessories.

Anyway... here's a maybe useful recommendation for realism: How about perception (and maybe charisma) penalties for wearing gas masks?

Very good points, PaddyGarcia, and you've given me a few ideas (whether they'd work or not, I dunno yet). Hazmat suits have to be intact in order to work correctly, right? Let's say you're wearing your spiffy Hazmat suit to avoid some rads and you're attacked by Raiders and one puts a couple holes in your suit. It would not provide the same amount of rad resistance after that. Can item "condition" even be modded in? Hmm.
Another idea, try to change the amount of rads your receive from drinking questionable water. Which opens up the whole concept of bacteria and such. Aside from Molerat disease, I don't think I've seen any illnesses in this game. I'm going to have to do a LOT of experimenting with the CK, I can see it now. Thanks for the enthusiasm and inspiration, guys. Cheers!

The last time Item condition was added into something again, skyrim.. it was easy to crash the game with, ruin save files and all in all mess up the game, Be VEEERRY careful about adding that in if you try to do so. I myself miss weapon and gear conditions and wish it was in skyrim and Fallout 4, buuuuut... item degradation did not happen in the old fallouts.

Damn, that's a shame. I honestly am not a fan of degradation, but in this case, it would make a lot of sense and be fairly realistic, too. Thanks for the heads up, SephMacLeod.

the durability system is in the game already, it just needs it to work the same as power armor. if you can get it to work the same way you can make a hazmat suit appear over the top (like power armor) as the the player model (and armor) and have it unequip when the durability hits zer0... maybe... idk..

Nice, like the perception and charisma nerf for gas-masks. I wore one once and almost had a panic attack because it was like trying to breath through a thin cushion xD

Just some idea to make radiation more interesting:

    - Radiation "wears off" after some time away from it. The more rads you have the longer it takes.

    - Severe penalties for a large dose. Such as seriously messed up vision, slight blackouts, (Vomiting? making you hungry in Survival mode)

    - Certain areas of water being DEADLY. Especially pools with waste barrels in them.

    - Here's one I think would be fun: Anti-radiation grenades. Simply throw one in an enclosed space and it releases an gas version of Rad-away. Nullifying or dampening the airborne radiation.

I know that's not really the scope of this mod, just throwing ideas around.

But if you could make some form of degradation for filters, that would be amazing!

Those are some good ideas, but it would take me a seriously long time to be able to do some of them (but having long-term goals aren't a bad thing, right?). As a single widowed father (of a four year-old), my modding time is limited to an hour or so after my son goes to bed. And then, it cuts into my playing time (just started a new game for the 78th time, finally got my load order working almost perfectly). The stat nerfs are completely PaddyGarcia's baby. He suggested them and I realized that they made perfect sence (and that they were something I COULD do with my mreager CK skills), and they were born.

I would LOVE to be able to add filters, and plan to (SOMEDAY), though presently, that's way beyond me. I won't promise anything, but I plan on trying once my CK-fu is strong enough.

    Hey, a fellow Morrowind modder!

Have you considered adding poison resistance? Sure, it would only protect against inhaled poisons, but we're already stretching reality to let the masks protect against what is probably 99% gamma radiation, so why not?

I actually had not thought about adding poison resistance, but that IS a good idea. Will mull it over and probably end up doing three versions, the one here, one that does away with the rad resistance, and one that adds poison resistance. I like options, like everyone else, and I think that'd be a good balance. Always nice to see a fellow TES "old-timer", lol. I tip my hat to you, Sir (or Ma'am).

Thanks for the download and the endorsement!

I figured this would be the easiest way to simulate a bit of realism in regards to the gas masks and radiation. I think that, after 210 years, It would be extremely hard to find unused filters for the masks, although I'm sure they could be improvised, like everything else in the FO universe. There would most likely be VERY little radioactive dust anywhere, and the only really hazardous radiation would be gamma rays...which a gas mask would do nothing but make you really uncomfortable and hot while you're being irradiated. Would LOVE to see a radiation overhaul as well. I'd say I'd do it, but I haven't made a mod since Morrowind, lol. A lot has changed...

Interesting...I may use this during a "Realistic" playthrough.

Someone needs to make a complete overhaul of the radiation system. While Deathclaws and Raiders are a real danger, I've always thought radiation should be more than just an inconvenience.

However, for the moment short of wearing a full suit of lead-lined power armor this can't really be done :/

    Endorsed
(Well, I will once the 15 min cooldown is up)
