Fist of all i want to thank you for all the effort doing this gide, it was really helpful.
I was wondering, does anyone knows if Horizon is compatible with F4 v1.5? because I know that it uses interface folder but I don't get any clue if has a patch or a new released version that deals with this. I already readed the patch notes and there is no hint about this topic and I was thinking about make a fresh clean installation but I don't want to do that if finally horizon is not compatible.

Man, I've just stumbled into this after spending all day CTDing when simply trying to exit The Museum of Freedom to get the Minigun & Power Armor - just started a new game with the release of Far Harbor....

Anyway - I've no idea if this is gonna solve my issues or not - but you've given me a place to start because I was at a total loss - I'm not a total noob and had been "logically" going thru things that seemed likely one by one - However - there is no such thing as "Logically" with Bethesda

Thanks for the info - regardless of whether it gets me back on track or not - I know more now than I did then - and have a new place to start!

Just want to say that I totally vouch for Yatz' Description page and the discussion of how to deal with F4 version 1.5. Thank you for the tips and sequence of file and mod management for Bethesda's latest patch. I followed your suggestions and ended up with a flawless game update on my rig. Not only is 1.5 as well as the reconfiguration of my mod files working solid, but I am also impressed with the performance boost impacted, evidently, by the game's latest patch. I'm seeing a minimum increase, overall, of framerates in the range of about 10 to 15 percent.

    Peace!

It's almost as though Bethesda actually "optimized" the 3D code in their latest patch, if that makes sense. I'm not running the best nVidia GTX card out there (mine's a GTX 960m 2g DDR5), but I am getting really good FPS all around, running the game in medium settings, including additionally installed enbseries_fallout4_v0291 (which, btw, I highly recommend).

Not sure if you are referring to ENB in general or the ENBoost portion, but I do highly recommend using at least the ENBoost portion. I've been using the ENB series for most of my play throughs. Also use ShadowBoost sometimes, but those affects really only help in certain scenarios. I haven't noticed an FPS change much (running on a pretty high-end laptop), but I do agree with you that Beth did something. There is a no problem where higher resolution textures sometimes text a few seconds to display. So you go up to the Workbench, see this ugly texture, then 3 seconds later, the higher res texture pops in. ENBoost helps with that, but the 1.5 update seems to help with that also, even without ENBoost.

Yeah, I am using the contents of enbseries_fallout4_v0291.zip that I downloaded from ENB's website/server. I believe I obtained the archive sometime last month. Apparently it is the latest version Boris Vorontsov has available for Fallout 4. You might know more about this than I do, but I cannot find a separate archive download for ENBboost, that you alluded to. It appears that ENBboost is assimilated into the general enbseries_fallout4_v0291 archive download, possibly patched into the contents. Do you know anything about that?

There is a separate download I found a while ago. Not sure if I can find it again because it was buried. But you are correct also. What you have is fine. I don't think there is a separate INI entry yet for Fallout like there was for Skyrim to disable the ENB stuff and just use the speed patch, but I abandoned using the old download I found and am using the latest full version with no ENB's enabled and do see subtle benefits depending on what I'm doing. So I think you're good.

Yeah, I think you're right, too. Latest offering appears to include the "v0283" patch rolled into "v0291". Boris does have the earlier patch available for download, but it seems to make more sense to just go with version 291, so that's what I got. Game looks better with ENB, IMO, than without.

Thanks you for this...as an ardent user of "no dotdotdot" and "Pleasant UI" I must say I was blindsided by the fact I could no longer use them. I finally went to DEF_UI and while it's ok and I can get to really like it I think, I really want my old set up back!

Now if you could go ahead and make a sure fired fix for that NMM un-doing my mods every time I load the game, you'd be a God.....')

Actually, I believe it's when I install/uninstall any mods....NMM and Bethesda.net both freak out. It seems to be a common issue with many since the new patch dropped. I was mainly being funny when I said make a fix for it, that's probably something NMM devs have to sort out.

Btw, I think I like your Pleasant UI preset better than the original, lol, so will probably just keep it.

I see what you are saying now. I hadn't seen it happened until I just installed a mod update which specifically added an ESP. Then it reset all my plugins to unchecked. I think you're right - pretty sure that one is a NMM fix.

In the meantime, if you do any scripting at all, you make a VBS script (or Powershell) that reads in the Plugins.txt file, adds an * to the beginning of each line, then writes it back out. If I have time, I'll write it and upload it.

Thanks for the compliment on the UI!

Check the FAQ for DEF_UI, your sorting mod (Valdacil?) and Armor & Weapons Keyword Community Resource. I've seen that comment many times and know the answer is to update one or more of those to the latest version, but can't for the life of me remember which one.

Also, thanks for letting Crimsonhawk know about the NMM update. I was coming here to do that and you beat me to it :)

Just a note to say I've installed your Pleasant UI preset and I haven't had any issues so far. It may be useful to mention that I almost never fast-travel and have not done so since installing this, so I have no input regarding the issue others are reporting.

I've encountered a couple small issues at 16:10:

Dialogue subtitles display even though I have these turned off in the game settings. Just general subtitles are enabled, but I get both.

The subtitles display in the same screen space as the selection item (e.g., 'Command' ) so that both become difficult to read. For example, I'm using the def_inv_scrap_en plugin for DEF_UI, and the subtitles obscure the item components; or when hovering on a companion, the subtitles and displayed choices obscure each other. I should probably take a closer look next time I'm in the game so I can give a more precise description.

But these are small things compared to the overall improvement to the HUD.

I've been using DEF_UI for a while but with the default HUD—this is the first preset I've tried (mostly because it seems the others are only for 16:9). I use DarNified UI in F3 and NV so it's nice to have something for F4 that improves the clumsy Bethesda UI. We don't all play on a giant TV.

And of course anything that helps to eliminate or at least hide the console interface is welcome.

Interesting. I never use subtitles, so I've never looked at how Neanka's and Valdacil's DEF_UI interface handle subtitles as compared to your selection in the game options.

For now, try out the 1.0c preset I just uploaded. I specifically disabled dialogue subtitles using DEF_UI. Would be interested to see if that works for you.

Also uploaded an "alternate" 1.0c which just moves the subtitles if you want to test that out.

Thanks for the updates! They both work for me. I've decided to keep the no-subtitles version for now. Being off-center in the Alt version, I can't really read them in the normal course of play.

Basically what happens with the 1.0b version is that the subtitles and the NPC commands occupy the same screen space—the NPC's name and 'Command' text (or the options for containers) and the subtitle text are superimposed on each other.

One thing I like about the 1.0c version is having the compass centered—the center of the compass bar lines up with where I'm looking in first person.

Subtitles are an interesting thing. In New Vegas I used dialog subtitles but not general subtitles. I think this is related to the protagonist's speech being just text. You read what you say and you read what the NPC says—it's a natural back-and-forth. Also, coming from a text-heavy game like Planescape, reading dialogue feels like a basic part of normal game play. In NV, the general subtitles are uninteresting—mostly NPCs saying 'Oof' and so on (although you need the general subtitles enabled to see what Rex 'says' at the end).

The voiced protagonist changes this dynamic (at least for me). I actually tried a no-voice mod at first but quickly realized that I was missing the non-dialogue speech the player character has. I ultimately settled on dialogue subtitles off and general subtitles on—the opposite of my New Vegas setup. With both the player and the NPCs speaking in FO4, and with the full-dialogue mod, the dialogue subtitles were just in the way. Also, with both parties speaking, the 'natural' tendency is to listen to both characters rather than reading the dialogue of both characters, so dialogue subtitles are unnecessary. OTOH, there is a lot of background talk in the game that can be difficult to pick up, which is why I was using the general subtitles. But I don't really need them, especially since I began using headphones to better pick up the many aural cues in the game (I think they did a very good job with the environment audio), and also I'm not the only person in this room playing PC games.

Back on topic: In regular DEF_UI (with the vanilla HUD layout) the subtitles display in the space between the interaction menus and the compass bar. I haven't yet attempted to modify the HUD myself, so I can't speculate on why the interaction menus and the subtitles in your 1.0b ended up in the same place. In any event, thanks for doing this. I gave you an endorsement.

Thanks for the endorsement and you've very welcome. I'll actually have a version you like up probably sometime tomorrow. It's centered and sized correctly. I have also adjusted the the compass down slightly and the HP and AP bars up slightly so that the new status icons (from the 1.5 update, the location of which we can't control yet), show up perfectly underneath the AP bar, lined up with ammo, flashlight etc.

Keep a look out for v1.0d in the next day or so.

Well, thanks for this. I finally got inspired enough to do my own. It's a bit of WiP since sometimes what looks good in the preview isn't so great in the game (it's possible to make things too small), but I'm getting there. The new icons are a drag—my character has mole rat disease, and the icon is more that a bit in the way. I'm not sure whether I want to put the ammo and grenade icons on the same line, since sometimes there's more than one "effect" icon—I may raise the AP and HP bars (need to be symmetrical! ) and stick the ammo below.

I totally get what you say in the other topic about alignment. The flash screen would definitely benefit from grid lines. It's unfortunate that the axis values are relative to the original position rather than to the frame borders. . . .

This is for the people who author Mods and the clueless users who expect everything to work bug free....

I just wanted to say thanks for the hard work and saying what needed to be said. The comments by everyone are a welcome change as well. Yes, the updates and patches seem to break more than they fix. Yes, troubleshooting load orders sucks giant purple parrot lips (?did I really just say that?). The latest 1.5 update took two evenings for me to troubleshoot. Yes, the Bethesda Mod release sucks elephant butt compared to what we already had. Yes, Bethesda keeps breaking things and making the experience less than desirable. And finally, Bethesda needs to get a clue and actually support the modders here instead of of interrupting game play with each release; that's just low rent amateur behavior. It took Bethesda how many years to release FO4? Really?!!! I think the developers here could have done a better job in much less time.

The GECK (it will always be the GECK) should have been the first DLC and Bethesda's announcements are full of @#$% about the GECK. If it really is the tool they used to create game content, it would have been release ready long before the game was released, think about it... FYI- it kinda sucks lizard lips by comparison to what I was expecting. As a tool, it's missing a ton of UI polish.

These issues are Bethesda's fault, not the Mod authors. Bethesda's QA process sucks whale antlers, the developers are very sloppy and they regularly release bland, bug ridden code that they call a story line. Yes, my Vertibird has actually flown underground a few times and the NPC's are over the top lame and the NPC AI has the combined intelligence of a pair of dead monkey balls. Untwist your undergarments and get over it, there is much, much worse out there.

Yes, there are some "use at your own risk" alpha release mods, there are some truly bad mods that may render your installed code unusable. If you don't understand what an Alpha or Beta release is, you don't have any business installing it. If you actually read the description, you were probably warned by the author ahead of time. Stop whining and get a clue...

The fact is that I would have walked away from FO4 within two weeks if it wasn't for the MOD authors. The game gets very boring once you have gotten past level ?256? when you max out all out the perks and one shot kill everything in sight. I've got almost 200 active mods and yes, I'm the tard who has over 500 customized Power Armor suits at Sanctuary thanks to Worsin's mods (talk about load lag :/ ). It's a great decoration, I don't often actually use Power Armor during game play. And for that, I can only say THANK YOU!

As developers, the Mod authors are much, much better at their craft than most corporate developers; they actually have some creativity and problem solving skills. They did it without any real help from Bethesda and hacked together something really cool with very limited tools and they did it for free. That's just freakin' awesome!!!

I feel like I haven't seen anyone else with the issue I was having.. The game would start fine, but there's no such thing as the 'mods' menu inside the game. The game also wouldn't load a single esp.

I checked that plugins.txt file, and all those asterisks were there. After about two and a half hours I gave up and started reinstalling the whole damn game.

Assuming you were not part of the 1.5 beta test group and that you confirmed you did in fact have the public release version of 1.5 installed, the Mods menu item is part of that version. Shouldn't have any bearing on the existence of any third party mods (to my knowledge, anyway). The fact that you didn't see that menu item alone would suggest two things:

      - Either you need to Verify Integrity of the Game Cache, or
      - Delete and reinstall the game

The only thing I would have done differently in your case is verifying the integrity of the game cache first (may or may not have saved you some time, depends on your download bandwidth).

Let us know if this does in fact fix your issue.

I opted out of the beta, and since I have the digital Steam version (I don't know if there are legal versions without Steam), it was updated to 1.5 automatically.

Verifying the game cache was one of the first things I did, multiple times even. Very small files failed to validate (I think around 2MB-6MB), those were downloaded. Not fixed.

It's very annoying having to redownload a whole ~26GB of a game when an update of ~650MB comes out. It's not, however, the first time I've had to redownload a game due to something breaking when mods are involved.

You'd think I'd keep a copy of the original game backed up somewhere after this many failed attempts at modding games. Guess I'd better start now.

A vanilla install, as expected, fixed the issue. I just wish I knew what the hell caused it in the first place.

Thank you for summarizing what you did, and I'm glad in the end it did fix it.

I feel your woes. First, I hate forced updates. I love games like Euro Truck Simulator 2, Stranded Deep, and Subnautica that get around Steam's enforcement by using the Beta system in a unique way. For instance, ETS2 is actually on version 1.23, but I'm still on version 1.18 for mod support. Because of how they do their updates, the vendor really supported their user base in a unique and very helpful way and I never get forced updates from them. For other games, I usually play in offline mode or have a backup of all the game files just in case. Ridiculous we have to do that. The idea we are "licensing" the ability to play the content on their terms is just ludicrous, but a product of our times.

Yet, we've all complained in multitudes and received nothing but a deaf ear, so it is what it is. Had to do full installs on games before for the very same reason you did - just because of one or two files that aren't updated properly.

Hat tip to your patience. In the immortal words of Andrew in Bicentennial Man... "One sympathizes"
