This mod is a really good opportunity to install FOEdit and make a patch for it. You can change the NPC that get spawned rather easily, the part that might take some careful fiddling and experimentation is removing the negative effects (explosions, behemoth rock getting spawned) that turn your settlers hostile if you use it in a settlement ^^ But it's worth it, it contains no scripts and as such is a great minimal tutorial on how to make your own spawn grenades. There's some "extra weirdness" in it (the secondary explosions / spawned things), but otherwise it's extremely light-weight, no quests, no nothing. Just an explosion that places an object which happens to be an NPC picked from a leveled list. Perfect :)
If the spawned NPC only have a package that tells them to follow the player or sandbox in the area, then they'll do that. You can make copies of the grenade/projectile/explosion to spawn different NPC (or copies of the same with different packages), and maybe instead of making them craftable, also add them to loot tables and vendor tables.
I really want a mod that replaces ghouls with skeletons. That would make my game 1000% more immersive (i.e. fun). Although this goes a long way to assisting me in my goal into being a Necromancer.
It will be nice they don't have the plasma explosion so I can play it in diamond city without turning myself hostile to the resplendent there. But I got so much fun with it. LOL
