Today I was told by another Nexus member that the description of my mod was historically inaccurate and that it could be construed as promoting underage drinking in the real world. After a short exchange I am of the opinion that this individual has a very different view of this game and mods in general than I do. My descriptive page is unchanged so any that care to view it can see for themselves if there is any fault to be found.
I have blocked the individual and deleted his comments, however I leave my response for any with an interest in whether beer can hydrate a person in the real world or not.
"Beer is frequently consumed in pre-industrial societies because the brewing process kills most of the bacteria in the water. Without a knowledge of the Germ Theory of Disease, those people may not have known why water tended to make them sick, but they knew from experience that low-alcohol content drinks didn't.
As far as hydration, I refer you to The Journal of Applied Physiology and their study published 1 October 1997 Vol. 83 no. 4, 1152-1158
It all comes down to alcohol content. Many modern beers have alcohol contents at or above 8%. In these cases there is sufficient alcohol to have a negative effect on hydration. However, most beers brewed by early societies for general use were much lower in alcohol, generally 2% or lower. The aforementioned study shows that consuming beer with an alcohol content of 4% or lower has no negative effect on hydration, and as the percentage lowers, has an increasingly positive affect.
Of course, nobody is arguing that beer is the BEST thing to drink when one is dehydrated. There are better choices. However, if you're scavenging across the Commonwealth and all you're got is a bottle of Gwinnett Stout, it'll do."
I dunno about any childerns that know how to put mods on the game via nexusmods.com if they do they are definitely smart enough to know that this is a game and that Beers wont make them recover from bullet wounds... all jokes aside really!
Great mod, perfect for anyone with a "hard drinkin' merc" character, and a top notch mod to have for survival play as well. This mod along with keeping Drinking Buddy makes a very happy wastelander.
A suggestion: I'd reduce the 20 healing points a bit; and add a couple of radiation purging ones. Another one: I'd keep the bottle cap. First, because of previous games (you get caps after using sarsaparilla in NV) and because after some use and hand-to-hand pass, the top of any bottle cap should be plain aluminum. No trace of any logo. Wastelanders would use any cap they have.
I've been going back and forth about adding the bottle cap back in. I agree with your logic on why it would be acceptable to use. I originally went with 20 points of healing to make beer comparable to water and encourage people to keep it. For my own hardcore version I removed the healing ability from both it and water.
I could make a rad purging beer, but in the vanilla game its so ridiculously easy to make refreshing beverages, I don't think it would get much use.
The idea of radiation purging is because a documentary I watched time ago. During the early atom age stages, It was quite common for scientists to get slightly contaminated with tritium (I think it was tritium) during their experiments. As the tritium sticks to body fluids, to remove radiation from the body, they drank a lot of water and diuretic drinks (like coffee). They end up noticing that beer was the most efficient drink for this purpose.
I guess this have something to do with the fact that beer is one of the most radiation-resistant drinks/food? No actual idea, just guessing.
Nice mod! +endorsed! now I have a reason to not gloss over all the beer I find in my loot. Is there any chance for a compat patch with DG Give My Bottles Back by DaemonGrin? So far im using both and in a survival game resusing bottles is hella useful.
That hit the spot. Only downside is that renaming the items would create some minor conflicts with sorting mod, and possibly slightly greater ones with those which allow crafting of homemade brews.
It shouldn't conflict with any recipes that allow you to craft the vanilla items as only the names, but not the reference ID's, were changed. Unfortunately this mod will conflict with any sorting mods that edit the vanilla records. Most sorting mods do so by making name changes and will overwrite anything that edits the same record.
It would be fairly easy to remove the addiction chance all together. It's just a single number. I prefer to keep a small chance though for realism. There are so many ways to remove addiction anyway. As far as reclassifying it, it could probably be done with a keyword change. I'm a bit leery of doing that without the creation kit though. I don't know how many things are referencing those keywords.
