A basic set of rules for settlement installation to avoid common errors.
Rule 1. Save before installing. Settlements are dangerous to uninstall mid-game, always make a save before hand just in case you need to reinstall or remove the settlement.
Rule 2. Custom settlements need to be at the bottom of your load order. Most bug reports are the result of not doing this correctly. "Scrap Everything" should never be below a custom settlement mod.
Vortex Installation Steps:
- With the settlement installed and enabled, click on the "plugins" tab on the bottom left side.
- Find the settlement plugin and double click on it. This should open up a small window to the right. Scroll to the bottom of this window.
- Within the window from step 2 find "Groups." Assign the plugin to the "Dynamic Patches" group. Vortex will now sort the mod to the bottom of your load order.
If the settlement uses a separate "Previs" plugin then that should be at the bottom instead.
This must be done when the settlement is first installed before you load your save. Moving it afterwards wont work. If you did not move the mod before loading you must revert to the pre-installation save and complete the steps above.
Rule 3. Flickering terrain and objects are precombines conflicts. This is not an installation error or a bug with the mod. Identify the mod causing the conflict and then alert the author. They can most likely make a compatibility patch to resolve this.
Rule 4. When installing a new settlement be far enough away that its cells aren't loaded. Being too close can sometimes cause issues.
Rule 5. Do not uninstall a custom settlement mid-game, it can cause corruption. If you need to remove a custom settlement load to the save from Rule 1.
Checking for Correct Installation:
- Can you send settlers and supply lines to the settlement?
- Can you claim the settlement without using console commands?
- Does the settlement's happiness rating function appropriately(Empty settlements should start at 50)?
- Does the settlement show up in the pipboy menu?
If any of these aren't true there may have been an installation error. Return to your pre-installation save and repeat the installation steps to ensure there are no other mods beneath it.
