Triage v2.0

Summary:
Triage is a medical mod designed to find the balance between the very simplistic means of healing crippled limbs that exists in Fallout 3, without bogging the player down in complex treatment options and medical supplies.

Concept:
I found the vanilla Fallout 3 medical treatment system to be rather boring. You can sleep 1 hour in a bed and full heal all your broken bones and your sucking chest wound, or you can use a stimpak and remove the crippled effect from all your limbs simultaneously (though not fully heal them). On the other hand, I didn't want the mod to be overly complex, requiring me to to carry around 5 types of bandages with a have a half dozen ways to fix my various injuries. Moreover, all the doctors in the game had practically no purpose beyond treating radiation and selling you stimpaks, since a bed is as good a treatment for the most grievous of injuries as they are. Plus, I missed the days of the old "Doctor" skill from Fallouts 1 and 2, and like the idea that the character needs to specialize some if you want to treat crippled limbs.

This has the net effect of making getting crippled a much more serious matter.

The medicine skill is representative of your ability to heal cuts, treat deep bruises and other flesh wounds (your hit points). However, serious injury such as broken bones, punctured lungs and head trauma, while they may not kill you outright, require specialized knowledge of human anatomy in order to treat. Two new perks are added to represent this specialized knowledge: The Wasteland Doctor perk allows you to treat crippled arms and legs in the field and the Wasteland Surgeon perk allows you to treat the more serious crippled head and chest. Or as an alternative, you can take the Rad Child perk, and consume radiation to heal yourself.

Recommendation:
I also highly recommend MechanicalPirate's excellent Amplified Crippled Effects mod (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=85) which complements Triage exceptionally well.

Gameplay Changes and Instructions:
Crippled limbs no longer heal with sleep, and Stimpaks can no longer be directly applied to crippled limbs to heal them. In order to heal their own crippled limbs, players need to take one of the perks listed below, and have the appropriate medical supplies in their inventory. Alternately, you can visit one of the wasteland's doctors, or use the My First Infirmary to heal your limbs to full health.

To treat your limbs, 'equip' the menu item Triage > located in your Apparel inventory and follow the instructions.

If you do not have the appropriate perk, are currently in combat, or do not have the appropriate medical supplies, you can perform "First Aid" on limbs. By using a single stimpak and the appropriate medical supplies, you restore 5% of that limb's health.

Injured limbs can be treated by selected "Triage Injured Limbs" from the Crippled Limbs menu. Injured limbs can be treated with 1 stimpak to fully restore their health over time.

Medical Braces (with the Wasteland Doctor perk) and Surgical Supplies (with the Wasteland Surgeon Perk) can be recovered after treatment. Your chance of successfully recovering your medical supplies is a percentage based on your Medicine Skill. For example, a character with Medicine Skill of 65, will have a 65% chance to recover supplies.

Hit Points will heal while sleeping at a set rate, recovering your entire Hit Point pool with 12 hours of bedrest. This is progressive, so sleeping less than 12 hours will restore an appropriate fraction of your health.

Limbs with greater than 5% health will heal while sleeping at the same rate as health does. Crippled limbs and limbs with 5% or less health will not heal while sleeping and need to be treated by Triage, a doctor, or My First Infirmary.

Stimpaks no longer heal instantly, they now 25% instantly and 75% over 5 sec. With Fast Metabolism Perk, this is increased to 40% instantly, 60% over 5 sec. The total healing is the same amount of hit points as in vanilla.

Surgical Tubing has been renamed Surgical Supplies

Medical Braces and Surgical Supplies have had their weight reduced from 2 lb to 0.5 lb.

The various Doctors in the Wasteland now sell Medical Braces and Surgical Supplies.

Three New Perks added:
Wasteland Doctor (lvl 2, Int 5, Med 40): This perk allows the player to use 1 Stimpak and 1 Medical Brace to fully heal a crippled Arm or Leg over time. BONUS: In addition, you have a 5% increased critical chance on non-mutated humans.

Wasteland Surgeon (lvl 6, Int 6, Med 60, Wasteland Doctor Perk): This perk allows the player to use 1 Stimpak and 1 Surgical Supplies to fully heal crippled Head or Chest over time. Bonus: Arms and legs heal twice as fast (30 seconds). In addition, your critical hits do 25% increased damage to non-mutated humans.

Rad Child (lvl 6, End 6): When your radiation level is at 400 rads or more, you will consume any rads in excess of 400 and heal your limbs and health until you are completely healthy or you hit 399 rads. SPOILER ALERT: This perk stacks with the Rad Regeneration given upon completion of Radiation Chapter of the "Wasteland Survival Guide" quest from Moira of Craterside Supply, so if you get both, your limbs (only) will health twice as fast!

If you do not want to have to take the Perks with level up, I have included a 'cheat' which allows players who do not want to take the perks as part of leveling up.
Open the console and type: Startquest TriageFreePerks
This will grant you the Wasteland Doctor and Wasteland Surgeon perks once you reach 40+ and 60+ medicine, respectively.

Known Issues:
If you click on your injured or crippled limbs in the Status menu of your Pip-boy, a stimpak will be consumed, but no healing will be applied. This will waste stimpaks! To heal your limbs, you MUST use the Triage > menu item located in the Apparel inventory and have the appropriate perk.

If the progressive sleep heal isn't working properly, open the console and type:
Startquest aaTriageSleepQuest
This should reactive the sleep script should it become deactivated for some reason.

When sleeping in an owned bed, sometimes (approximately 25% of the time) the progressive sleep heal will not work and you will be fully healed instead. This is due to conflict with the script that adds the Well Rested Perk that I havent been able to resolve yet. I recommend you reload from the Autosave and re-rest.

Stimpak tooltips will not reflect the full amount healed by a stimpak, only the instant amount. The portion which is healed over time does not show up on the tooltip. Rest assured you are being healed for the same amount as you would with vanilla Stimpaks!

Compatibility:
This mod will cause conflicts with any mod that changes Stimpaks, Medical Braces and Surgical Tubing. To avoid issues, I recommend you load this mod later in the load order than any mod (such as many "overhaul" mods) which changes those items.

Changelog:
v1.0 - Initial Release
v1.1 - Added compatibility for Phalanx and fixed the issue with "feeding" stimpaks. Thanks Tarrant for the suggested fix.
v1.2 - Fixed bug where new characters would start with Rad Child perk. Fixed bug where after sleeping the "crippled limb indicator" will flash, even though your limbs are not crippled.
v1.3 - If you do not have the appropriate perk, are currently in combat, or do not have the appropriate medical supplies, you can perform "First Aid" on limbs. By using a single stimpak, you restore 5% of the limbs health.
- Head/Chest Triage only takes 1 stimpak (instead of 2)
- Treating a limb (with the appropriate perk) now restores 100% of the limb's health over time, rather than 50% as before.
- Injured limbs (with greater than 5% health) will now regenerate slowly with sleep, at the same rate that health does. Crippled Limbs and limbs with 5% or less health will not regenerate with sleep and must be treated by a doctor or Triaged.
- Weight of Medical Braces and Surgical Supplies reduced to 0.5 (from 1.0)
v1.4 - Fixed a bug preventing players who performed full Triage on their Head or Chest from getting the healing effect.
v1.5 - When the player attempts to treat a crippled Head or Chest with only the Wasteland Doctor Perk a message will state that First Aid will be performed instead.
v1.6 - Fixed a bug where the Rad Child perk would continue to remove rads even when the player is not injured.
v1.7 - The Triage menu now has an option to treat injured, but not yet crippled, limbs. It requires 1 stimpak, and will heal the limb to full health over 1 minute. The Perk requirements to treat injured limbs are the same as crippled limbs.
- Added a 'cheat' which allows players who do not want to take the perks as part of leveling up. Open the console and type: Startquest TriageFreePerks
This will grant you the Wasteland Doctor and Wasteland Surgeon perks once you reach 40+ and 60+ medicine, respectively.
v1.8 - First Aid treatment now requires the appropriate medical supplies, Medical Braces for Arms and Legs, and Surgical Supplies for Head and Chest.
- Medical Braces (with the Wasteland Doctor perk) and Surgical Supplies (with the Wasteland Surgeon Perk) can now be recovered after treatment. Your chance of successfully recovering your medical supplies is a percentage based on your Medicine Skill. For example, a character with Medicine Skill of 65, will have a 65% chance to recover supplies.
v1.9 - Fixed a bug which was preventing the progressing sleep healing from working properly. Thanks to Spamcan for discovering and identifying the fix!
v2.0 - Fixed a bug which could cause Crash to Desktop when placing Stimpaks in containers.
Fixed a bug which would cause Stimpaks to lose their hotkey when dialog was started.
Fixed a bug which was causing the progressive sleep heal to not work, and the default "full heal on sleep" to take effect instead. See known issues regarding sleeping in owned beds.
