Readme File
=========================

This mod attempts to bring Traits back to Fallout by adding 60 perks to the game, most of which are chosen during character generation.

This mod is best played with a new game, so that most of the Traits can be used. I have included my QuickStart.esp file for use with this mod so that players can start a New Game without having to deal with the childhood sequences.

Some of the character traits require the use of Caiman's must-have "nochilduse removed" mod, which I have included in this archive. You can get the latest version at his file entry here:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1817

I would also like to thank xpiratosx for his upload of the classic Fallout Pip Boy icons, here:

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2147

Give them lots of kudos, folks!

=============\
Where it Goes:
=============/

To install this mod, simply extract the archive to your "\Fallout 3\Data" folder. Let it overwrite if it wants to. Then activate "CharacterTraits.esp" in the Data Files section of your favorite Fallout 3 launcher, as well as "nochilduse.esp", and start the game.

If you are using Operation Anchorage, use the CharacterTraits Anchorage Compatible.esp instead.

If you want to start a new game quickly and skip most of the CG scenes at the start of the game, activate "QuickStart.esp" as well.

Also, make sure your Fallout.ini file contains the line: bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
This file should be located in My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3\. Otherwise, the Perk graphics may not show up properly.

=============\
What it Does:
=============/

This mod adds 60 new Perks intended to enhance roleplaying. Most of these are considered Traits in the classic Fallout sense - they each give a benefit, and they each have their drawbacks. Some of the new traits can have a huge impact on gameplay. This mod is therefore not indicated for a first play-through, but rather, it exists to add to Fallout 3's replayability.

===================\
How To Use This Mod:
===================/

A player starting a new game will discover that they have a Terminal called My Computer sitting on the desk in their room. Accessing this terminal will bring up a menu containing a myriad of character traits. The player selects a trait by using the terminal to select the trait and agreeing that the trait describes him or her.

The trait can then be removed by denying that the trait describes him or her. The whole process is actually very much more intuitive and less complicated than it sounds here.

Certain traits will cancel others out. For example, a person cannot be a Giant and a Tiny Person at the same time. A person cannot be both Agoraphobic and Claustrophobic (I can't imagine such a nightmarish existence).

The terminal will remain available until the player leaves Vault 101. That way, the Traits can be changed at any point until the Escape! quest is done.

==========\
The Traits:
==========/

====================
Psychological Traits
====================

23rd Century Schizo - You have a borderline personality. You have a remarkable indifference towards life, leading to an almost magical resistance to the elements (+25 elemental and radiation resistance). Your Perception is also heightened due to your paranoia (+2). However, you are rambling and alarming in your Speech, causing others to grow uneasy around you (-10 speech).

Hyperactive - You are overexcited, talkative, zealous and overbearing. Your excessive energy allows you quick movement (+1 Agility), but you find sneaking around to be excruciatingly boring (-10 sneak).

Liar - If there's a chance to tell the truth, you ignore it. If you're caught in a lie, you'll make up another lie to cover yourself, and then lie about it later. You liar. You've gotten pretty good at it (+10 speech), but keeping track of all those untruths has affected your memory (-1 Perception).

Mad As A Hatter - Mad As A Hatter - Twas brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe. Watch out for momraths. You are beyond crazy, my friend. Look at you, talking to yourself like this. You'd better find someone to help you before you meet a Jabberwock. You have no fear of fire (resistance +50), but your dissociation makeks it hard for you to react to all sorts of stitumulations (-1 Perception, Agility and Charisma). Smile!

Suppressed Rage - Your life is at the mercy of your temper. You manage to keep it inside, but you possess so much anger it threatens to overwhelm you at any minute. You will rage out as soon as you begin fighting in close quarters (+10 Melee and Unarmed Skill), but your hands shake constantly from your subconscious feelings, lowering your skill with firearms (-10 Small Guns and Energy Weapons).

Withdrawn - You're a regular Jackie Paper, born with a mental condition resembling autism. You are absolutely brilliant (+5 Intelligence, +5 skill points per level) due to prolonged introspection and vivid imagination, but you struggle to communicate with the outside world coherently (Speech capped at 0). Luckily, Dad was able to help you learn to speak fluently, if haltingly.

===============
Physical Traits
===============

Accident Victim - You were crushed under a malfunctioning Vault door when you were a teenager. All of your limbs were severed painfully during the rescue, but you were outfitted with robotic prosthetic devices, which have enabled you to live your live relatively normally. You are endowed with superior strength (+3 Strength, +10 unarmed and melee damage), but the delicate mechanisms of your artifice make damage more problematic (+25 damage received).

Bad Back - You suffer from terrible chronic back aches. While this has taught you to ignore pain to an extent (+5% damage resist), you can carry far less equipment with you (-50 carry weight).

Chronic Ailment - You suffered an illness while still in the womb, and you were born with physical symptoms that continue to plague you until this day. Your Endurance is drained (-2), but you have learned to treat life as a series of learning experiences (+20% experience gained).

Lady's Man / Supermodel - You are gorgeous. Stunning, even. And you are aware of it. Even heterosexual members of your own gender stop to stare at you. You are dripping with Charisma (+4), but because of your vanity, you have suffered in the more rugged values of Strength and Endurance (-2).

Radiation Allergy - You were born in the wrong time period. The slightest exposure to radioactive particles causes you great sneezing and suffering (-25% rad resist), but this rampant threat to your safety has made you a very careful and observant person (+2 Perception).

Ugly As Sin - To call you hideous would be an understated compliment. You are very likely the most unattractive human being ever allowed to live. When your Mother called you "very strapping," she was being sarcastic to make herself feel better. Your Father hoped you would grow up to look like him - you didn't. While most people can barely stand to look at you (-4 Charisma), you have gained Strength and Agility (+2) from fighting off those who have unfairly tried to rid the world of you.

=============
Phobia Traits
=============

Agoraphobic - The only thing you hate more than the idea of going outside is staying outside. Once you leave the safety of a building, you take immediate penalties to your Agility and Intelligence (-1), but you gain +2 Strength from the fear.

Claustrophobic - You were exploring an off-limits section of the Vault as a child, and part of the ceiling collapsed on you. You were unharmed by the ordeal, but it took the rescuers two days to reach you, and you never fully recovered emotionally. Being indoors fills you with dread, reducing your Agility and Intelligence (-1), but you gain +2 Strength from your fear.

Hematophobic - Your birth was exceptionally bloody, and it profoundly affected your psyche. The sight of blood or gore makes you violently nauseous. You cringe at even the mere thought of bloodshed. As a result, you shun combat of any kind (combat skills capped at 10), but you have devoted so much effort to learning that you are somewhat of a prodigy (+25 to all non-combat skills).

Hydrophobic - There was nothing you hated more than the Vault swimming lessons. Unable to confront your fear of drowning, you needed to keep coming up with valid excuses not to get in the pool (+10 speech). Unfortunately, you suffer terribly when forced to swim (concussion effect) and while in water, your Agility is reduced to 1.

==================
Personality Traits
==================

Bookworm - Comic books were not the only type you loved to read. Most of your childhood was spent in the pages of one book or another, and so you are well-read (+1 stat gain from books), but the strain to your eyes from reading in the dark has damaged your Perception (-1).

Bully - It's not that you weren't loved and attended to as a child. It's just that you were so egocentric that the love and attention weren't enough. So you pushed around every body that was smaller than you, seeking satisfaction through bullying. Your natural Strength helped this goal (+1), but your constant quest for conflict has affected your ability to communicate peacefully (-10 Speech).

Conscious Orphan - The loss of a parent is never forgotten. Growing up without a mother granted you an early, keener understanding of death and its consequences. You are reluctant to ever take a life, causing your attacks to deal less damage (-25%). However, your enemies may be able to sense this on some level, for their attacks do just as less to you.

Life Of The Party - You were always the first person to call when there's a party to throw. In fact, you were usually the person throwing it. You love to be around others (+1 Charisma), but you have an addictive personality (twice as likely to get addicted).

Reckless - Never have you used a gun's safety feature. You leave knives lying around in the open around small children. It is as if you care nothing for the safety of yourself or others. It's not necessarily true, but you sure act like it. Your attacks deal 25% more damage, but you take 25% more damage yourself.

Smithy - A childhood fascination with forging and metalwork never left you. Your body and expertise have been fortified by your metallurgy (+20 Repair skill), but your joints have gotten stiff after years of hunching over a workbench (-1 Agility).

Tomboy (female only) - You played with guns, not with dolls. You dislike dresses and hate the stereotype of women needing protection from men. Your upper body Strength is greater than that of many females (+1), but you tend to be overly assertive in your dealings with strangers (-10 Barter and Speech).

========================
Character History Traits
========================

Boxing Champ - You were the king of Vault 101's secret fight club. The first rule was... actually, you forgot the first rule. Too many blows to the head have harmed your Intelligence (-2), but you can fist-fight with the best of them (+30 Unarmed skill, +5 Unarmed damage).

Charlatan - Your entire life, you have excelled in the art of manipulation. You have always had a knack for wheedling people into doing what you want. You are gifted with a silver tongue (+15 Barter and Speech skills), but your reluctance to get into direct confrontations may be your downfall (-5 Combat skills)

Lily-Livered - You wouldn't be caught dead in a fist-fight. Not after the pounding you took last time. You have learned to deal with your enemies from a distance (+5 Small Guns, Explosives, and Big Guns), but you panic if forced to fight hand-to-hand (Unarmed skill -15).

M.D. - Screw the G.O.A.T. You were born to be a Doctor. Your knowledge of Medicine (+30 skill) among the residents of Vault 101 was rivaled only by your Father. However, you have taken an oath to do no harm, and so your combat skills suffer - the bigger the gun, the harder it is to bring yourself to use it (-5 to -15 Combat Skills).

Nasty Child - No matter what your poor Father tried, you were a horrible little brat growing up. You shot him with your BB gun so often he took it away. You pulled hair, spat, cursed, and got expelled from school for kneeing Mr. Brotch in the crotch. You even tried setting fire to the Overseer's office before Officer Gomez apprehended you. You get a bonus to your Sneak skill (+25) from prowling around the Vault, but your lack of manners and schooling affected you more than you'd like to admit (-1 Charisma and Intelligence).

Nietzschean Icon - Nietzsche said "That which does not kill me, strengthens me." You believe he was referring to you. Your life was been one of unfathomable adversity (-5 luck). It seems like every other month, something awful happens. Thankfully, you have taken your misfortune in stride, and have used your trials and tribulations to improve yourself in every way (+10 to all skills). This, said Zarathustra.

==============
Genetic Traits
==============

Anomaly - You were born with an oddly shaped genetic structure. It is as if your body and skeleton were designed for a planet with higher gravity. The concave in your chest has given you asthma, reducing your Endurance (-3). However, you are immune to radiation.

Blind As A Bat - Your vision has declined rapidly after your birth.Only your prescription contact lenses can help you. You can barely see at all, but your sense of sound has risen to compensate for your poor eyesight, raising your Perception (+3).

Photosensitive - Poor thing. You were born with dilated pupils, and they never contracted. You have always avoided brightly lit areas - even indoor fixtures bother you, and you find sunlight to be near blinding. Only your prescription lenses can help you. On the bright side (heh, heh, heh !! ), you can see in the dark better than anyone you know.

Escape Artist - You are exceptionally small boned (-2 Strength). When you were young, you were so frail that the Vault bullies would sometimes tie you up and leave you in a closet, helpless. Luckily, this gave you an opportunity to learn all sorts of escape tricks (+2 agility), and your small size can be a help at times.

Royal Blooded - You are distantly related to ancient kings, and you're damn proud of it. You fantasize about ruling over a castle and kingdom, and have begun to try bringing elements of your fantasy into reality. You have trained in the art of sword fighting (+10 Melee skill), but people find your demeanor irritating (-1 Charisma) since you treat them like inferiors.

Tiny Person - You hold the known record for "World's Smallest Person." You're so cute! You are dealt a terrifying amount of damage and you have almost no physical strength. A radroach is a terrifying beast to you, but you are better at sneaking and getting into things than anyone you know (+50 lockpick, +100 sneak, -95% damage resist, -9 Strength).

Troll - It's not your fault you were born so big (+25 melee and unarmed attack damage), or so slow (-3 Intelligence). You do your best, despite the wicked rumours passed around about you. You know, the one about your mother being a Super Mutant. Who knows? Maybe it's true.

Giant - You are bigger than big, taller than tall, larger than life. The Overseer tried to evict you from the Vault for consuming so much food, but Amata saved you from that fate. Your unbelievable size makes you a powerful beast of a fighter (+50 Unarmed/Melee damage, +9 Strength), but your hands are too big to do many tasks well (lockpick, sneak, science, small guns and energy weapons capped at 0).

====================
Miscellaneous Traits
====================

Born Under A Sign - Beatrice always said you were destined for greatness. You were born during a celestial event. Your whole life has been a dramatic spiral of fortunate coincidence and synchronicity (+4 luck), but this has led to a complacent life outlook and you have neglected the art of self-improvement (-10 all skills).

Glass Eye - On your tenth birthday, your Father presented to you a BB gun. On your eleventh birthday, you shot your eye out with a BB gun. On your twelfth birthday, your Father presented to you a glass eye. Your reduced Perception (-2) is offset by your natural prowess with small firearms (+15 Small Guns skill).

Medically Inept - It is a notable twist of fate that the child of a Doctor is so uninspired by conventional medicine. While you have a natural resistance to all sorts of Poison (+15), the concept of Medicine has always been mysterious to you (-15 Medicine).

Neat Freak - Uh oh, another smudge! You are obsessed with cleanliness (it is, after all, next to godliness, isn't that what they say?). You are so used to picking up and moving around clutter that you can manage greater burdens with ease (+25 carry weight).

Soldier - Enrolled in Vault 101's ROTC program (Rounding Out Troublesome Children), where you were taught basic training in the use of all types of combat. Your combat skills are all increased by 10, but your training did not cover civilian specialties, and you take a -10 penalty to all non-combat skills.

Special Person - You have what your Dad calls "con-gentle brain damage." You aren't sure what it means, but you'd never let a silly thing like that affect your life. Plus, there is no one better with their hands than you. Mister Gomez even let you fix his gun once. Your repair skill is excellent (+50) and you have no form of speech impediment, but it will take effort to overcome the circumstances of your birth (-5 Intelligence).

Colorblind - You will never know the beauty of a rainbow, and the subtle nuances of a traffic light will never be fully yours. Oh well, not a lot of those going around these days anyway.

=========\
The Perks:
=========/

In addition to the Traits available at the beginning of the game, this mod also adds 16 perks attained at the level up screen:

Born Again Mutant - You aren't Super yet, but you seem to be slowly turning into a Mutant. You have grown in stature, leading to an increase in Strength and Endurance (+4), but you are sluggish (-4 Agility) and words are getting harder to form (-70 Speech). On the bright side, your skin is like armor (+25% damage resist), radiation can barely harm you (+75% resist), and the other Mutants are looking sexier each day (Super Mutants will no longer attack).
Req: Level 20

Debutante (female) - You have mastered the art of making people fall in love with you. For better or worse, you have a knack for playing people's heartstrings like a harp. You are adept at acting innocent and vulnerable (+15 speech), but you are mediocre in a gun fight (-5 gun skills).
Requires: No Troll, Giant, Withdrawn or Tomboy traits, CHA at least 6

Dr. Jekyll - You can probably thank the Wasteland for your split personality. During the day, you are a gentle but brilliant Doctor who enjoys easing the suffering of others. At night fall, you become a crazed lunatic who enjoys cutting people into many different pieces before eating their hair (+25 Melee damage and skill at night).
Req: Level 6, M.D. Trait

Evil Bastard / Evil Bitch - All your life you have struggled against an inner evil that threatened to transform you into a cold-blooded monster. You have just stopped struggling. Your newfound megalomania makes your confidence soar (+5 to all skills), but your Karma plummets, and your soul is so twisted it will never grow higher.
Req: Level 10

Fit As A Fiddle - Time has all but forgotten what that expression means, but you represent it fully. You are proud to keep your body in peak physical condition, affording you a bonus to your Hit Points (+50).
Req: No Life of Party Trait, Endurance 6, Strength 6

Foppish - Dignified and proper, you consider yourself the epitome of the stylish Wastelander. You are quick to notice the flaws of others (+2 Perception), but your clothes (even your underwear) are too tight-fitting to allow for much flexibility (-1 Agility).
Req: No Uncouth

His Holiness / Her Holiness - It doesn't matter what people think of you or your actions. You know you're doing God's work here. Your study and preaching of holy scripture has paid off, and your deity has given you a boon to Medicine and Speech (+10).

Outsider - It's just something about you. No group of individuals has ever accepted you as one of their own. Even in the Vault, your only real friends were Amata and Jonas. Everyone else treated you as an outcast, if politely so. The problem only got worse after you left the vault. People regard you distantly (-1 Charisma), but this allows you to observe social interplay more objectively (+2 Intelligence).
Req: No Life of Party or Bully Trait

Radioactive Bug Man - Early in your life, you were bitten by a radroach. The roach's radioactive saliva mixed with your blood marrow and re-coded your DNA. Your sweat glands now secrete roach pheromones. Don't worry, humans can't detect the scent, but insects will no longer attack you, as they consider you kin. Hooray!

Resentful - Come on. After all the crap you've gone through, all the great things you've done for everyone, you deserve a little credit! These people would be nothing without you, damn it! They'd all be shot dead or starved or worse. The ingratitude! Your bitterness has strengthened your resolve (+1 Endurance and Strength), but people are finding you more abrasive (-2 Charisma).
Req: Level 12

Stench Of Death - You have begun to smell as if you are rotting from the inside out. Most sane folks are utterly repulsed by your stink (-9 Charisma). You are so odiferous that wild Deathclaws will mistake you for a decaying corpse and actively avoid going near you.
Req: Level 15

Sureshot - It is better to do something right than to do it quick. That's what you believe, anyway. You take more time and care than most people to aim your weapon (-25 AP), and as a result, your VATS shots are much more accurate.
Req: No Hyperactive Trait, Perception 4, Level 5

Tainted - The Wasteland is a harsh mistress. The horrors you have witnessed have taken their toll on your being. Your reflexes have been finely honed (+1 Agility), and your body has adapted to the rigors of your lifestyle (+1 Strength and Endurance). Your personality is another story - embittered by your experiences, you have lost faith in humanity (-3 Charisma).
Req: Level 16, Resentful Perk

Tough Hide - Dirt, dust, sunlight, metal shavings in the wind - the Wasteland is bad for the pores. You have developed scars and callouses all over your body, and your skin has become more like leather. You take less damage as a result (5% damage resistance), but you are somewhat less attractive than you used to be (-1 Charisma).
Req: Level 8

Uncouth - Barbaric as they come, you have no sense of manners and your hygiene is nonexistent. You are physically fit (+1 Strength, +1 Endurance) and good with a sledgehammer (+10 melee skill), but you can barely conduct yourself in a civil manner (-15 Speech, -15 Barter skill), and you're a bit dumber than most when it comes to social dynamics (-1 Intelligence).
Req: No Foppish, Neat Freak, Lady's Man, Debutante or Charlatan

Wannabe Shopkeeper - If things had turned out differently, you would have been a marvellous salesman. Your natural Barter skill is considerable (+60), but you are too involved with monetary matters to practice your other skills (-5 other skills)

====================\
The Traits and Perks:
====================/

Please see the file "character_traits_and_perks_rundown" for detailed
descriptions of each Trait and Perk and what they do.

========================\
Things That Must Be Said
========================/

- Reassigning S.P.E.C.I.A.L points at the Vault door after assigning traits will reset all traits. This is designed to prevent exploitation.
- Intense Training can overcome any natural-born deficiency.
- Tag! Skills will overcome any such deficiencies as well.
- Pouring points into a skill you have an extreme deficiency in is possible, but sometimes pointless (if you have -100 to sneak from the Giant trait, you would need to put 100 points in Sneak just to balance it out).
- This mod should work just fine with every other Perk package out there.

====================\
If Bad Things Happen:
====================/

- Make sure you are using the latest version of the mod, and that everything is where it belongs.
- If you are getting the "children cannot use that" message, that means you are either (a) not using nochilduse.esp, or (b) that another mod is conflicting with it.

This mod was tested extensively before being uploaded, but issues can get through with any mod, so please let me know if you find any. I'll keep fixing glitches as long as people are finding them. Tell me all your problems.

Questions, comments, and hate mail may all be sent to my e-mail address, [email protected].

==============================\
Current Snags Being Worked Out:
==============================/

- I can't seem to match face geometry to the player for certain perks
- Jumping giants will be able to see into the ceiling in certain interiors
- Weapons will always be size matched to the wielder, even with Tiny people.
- I wanted to use glasses for the vision traits but I couldn't get the new
glasses to properly stick on the player's face, so it's contact lenses for now.

========\
Conflicts
========/

This mod will conflict with any mod that makes the player's desk in Vault 101 unavailable.

============\
Future Plans:
============/

- More traits and more perks
- Updates
- Glitch fixes if necessary
