That updated *very experimental* LODgen linked here is a lot more complicated to use than the one from 2018 on the nexus...You should maybe put a warning for beginners like me. In other news how do you completely remove LODgen from your game because I can't find uninstall instructions anywhere to do that except very vaguely on reddit. Which files specifically does it add and why is there no uninstall for them in 2025 like every other mod out there lol. Unless I'm missing something obvious its just textures & meshes in a landscape folder right?
EDIT no idea why Nexus formatted my post like that either.
Not really my responsibility. But maybe I'll do a consice lod guide for beginners.
The experimental part is refering to the terrain lod which isn't really experimental anymore. The page needs updating. You can skip terrain and only do object lod like the old version. That's all you need for mods like aerfu lod, lodify etc.
All the instructions are in the xlodgen link page, but you probably saw the wall of text and thought this is complicated. That was my experience anyways. It's pretty much the same as 2018 version.
Basically all you need to do is: - Put the xlodgen files in the fo3 folder - rename xlodgen64 to fo3lodgen64 - right click fo3lodgen64 and change the output folder to where you like. Eg -o:"c:\YourOutputPath\" Best have it somewhere unrestricted like a desktop folder.
Then you generate lod with the program which is identical to the 2018 program bar terrain.
If you use vortex, it's best to zip the output so you can install the lod like a mod and also uninstall the lod like a mod.
If you drag and dropped the lod into your data folder, you will have to delete them manually.
This will delete lod from other mods too if they are loose files.
To restore the lod from other files, you just press deploy mods in vortex and it should give the option to restore them.
The lod files you want to delete should be located in textures/landscape/lod and meshes/landscape/lod
To avoid deleting some other files it's best to open the aforementioned lod folders, and for meshes, type .niff in the search bar and delete all the found files. Do the same for textures lod folder except you're searching for .DDS files.
All of that won't be necessary in the future if you zip the lod output files and install them like a mod, assuming you use vortex.
Thank you for the instructions @Drarack, with that you're halfway done with a basic guide already, just polish it up a bit and make it into an article now (in the Combined Lod ESPs page perhaps).
Yessss. I've been waiting for someone to tackle this. Thank you!
*edit*
Not sure what's happening but I'm seeing messed up LOD everywhere after generating with Fo3lodgen. I enabled the .esp for generation and then disabled it before running the game.
You're welcome. You should check out Reservoir of Mods New Vegas. Some of the new animations might benefit new users and fit well in your guide. Don't think any require an esp or esm

You might need to use xlodgen for this one too. See description for a link, and also a link to lodify if you don't have it already. It's very good
