Always run the game once through Steam/GOG after installing it to generate .ini files!
Vortex users: Install FOSE 1.3b2 manually in Fallout 3 folder after patching, do NOT use a suggested "Fallout Script Extender" option in Vortex!

     - I'm getting "Invalid executable" error
     - Verify game files on Steam or GOG.

     - FOSE does not work
     - use Fallout3.exe, not fose_loader.exe. Doublecheck that you have FOSE 1.3b2 installed manually in Fallout 3 folder.

     - My antivirus thinks this is a trojan
     - It's not, add the file to exclusions of your antivirus.

    - I'm trying to install the patch with a mod manager and it doesn't work
    - It's a patch, not a mod. Read the description for installation instructions.

    - The game works but steam overlay and playtime don't work
    - You have to start the game through Steam for that to work, since Fallout 3 does not use Steamworks integration.

    - Patcher window opens and immediately closes, game is still unpatched
    - Install the redistributables linked in the requirements of the patcher.

    - My game still crashes
    - If you followed all instructions correctly, it's most likely unrelated to the patch.

    • If you have just installed the game, you need to run FalloutLauncherSteam.exe (or FalloutLauncher.exe for GOG) before running the game to generate INI files.
    • If not, try deleting the ini files in Documents/My Games/Fallout 3 and running FalloutLauncherSteam.exe (or FalloutLauncher.exe for GOG) again.
    • If you are using Mod Organizer 2 and the game won't start through it, you probably created your MO2 instance before generating ini files. Create a new one through instance selection dialog (button below "File" in the top-left corner), or disable "profile-specific ini files" in MO2 profile settings, or copy ini files over manually if you know how to do that.
    • Clean reinstall of the game helped stop crashes for some users (uninstall the game on Steam, delete the installation folder, delete everything except saves in Documents/My Games/Fallout 3, reinstall the game)

Can confirm that this doesn't work for the German censored version (1.0.0.15) from Steam. I did a clean install of the game and followed the instructions here to a T. I still get the "invalid executable" error.

Edit: I guess since the German censored version was never updated, I don't actually need this. I installed a bunch of mods and the game runs just fine.

How did you find out you have the NoGore version?

I went in the the game directory and hovered the mouse cursor over Fallout3.exe file. I got a little pop-up with details about the file including the file version. Instead of either 1.7.0.4 (the new update) or 1.7.0.3, it says 1.0.0.15. There is also a Fallout3ng.exe in the game directory that I didn't put there. So I assume that it is part of the NoGore version as well. That one is file version 1.7.0.3.

I've tried this many times, verified the files, deleted everything and reinstalled, etc. It always says invalid executable. I think the problem might be that I have the german censored version, idk. Is there any way to fix this?

That just means it can use up to 4GB of RAM. That doesn't necessarily mean it'll use 4GB of RAM.

The patch worked perfectly and I continued with the installation tutorial correctly, the only detail I have is that the key configuration and the difficulty of the game are not saved in my game, whenever I open the game the key configuration is restored and default difficulty when I open the game again, a solution?

psddt: Another thing is that after a while playing when entering or leaving interiors (example George's town) the game crashes, I can't wait, I can't do quick saves :/

I also had a problem crashing (had to use task manager to exit the game) entering/leaving an area or during fast travel.  For me the problem was ReShade v5.1.0, I had to revert back to v4.9.1 (v5.0.2 caused the pipboy screen to go blank).

Anyone having trouble getting this to launch via Mod Organizer 2 (MO2)?

After patching, the Fallout3.exe launches fine if I do it manually from the folder. However, MO2, with no mods enabled, crashes on startup, doesn't even load the main menu. Little lost on this

So, I have a clean install of steam GOTY version (bought the game today, even if I already played it before by non-conventional ways).
Downloaded 4GB patcher, FOSE beta 2,
    - executed the launcher, disabled vsync, as asked
    - patched only the FOSE with 4gb patcher,
    - saw I needed to downgrade for FOSE to work, so downloaded this
    - starting the game with fallout3.exe

    - The game is visible for 1.5 second in the task manager, not any screen.
    - This can be found at the end of FOSE logs:
    patched
    init complete
    FOSE: deinitialize
So... seems like I got instant crash

    - restarted the PC, but as expected, no change
    - tryed with launcher as well

EDIT: It now works, I've downloaded a custom exe from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R2dzrfvTeupNQIdWUWBuQdL53ub_eOUO/view
Patched it with this current mod, because else it needs windows live

I'm having some trouble with the patcher. The console says that Xdelta3.exe doesn't support my version of windows. My laptop is getting repaired right now so I'm playing on a crappy pc running an x32 version of windows, which is probably why. Does anyone know where to get an x32 version of Xdelta3 or a workaround to make the app unnecessary?

      xdelta3 binaries are available here - https://github.com/jmacd/xdelta-gpl/releases
i686 build might work for you, rename it to xdelta3.exe though or the patcher will get confused.
