My particular brand of crashing on launching is launching via the launcher, screen goes black with a smaller black window in the top left corner. Then crash to desktop.
I'm using Windows 10 and the GOG version of Fallout 3.
That's the thing. I have no mods installed. It's the vanilla GOG version. I'm told it works out of the box but it sure ain't working for me. Tried a bunch of stuff suggested by GOG's support articles and various potential fixes via Googling it.
I'm open to trying anything you suggest but I've put in a support ticket to GOG and if I can't find a fix before they reply, I'm gonna cut my loses and get a refund.
Weirdly, Fallout New Vegas launches fine despite both F3 and New Vegas using the same engine.
1 - Okay, what I want you to do is to go to this page https://fose.silverlock.org/ and download the fallout 3 script extender and install it. Installation instructions should be in the folder when you unzip it.
2 - Go here https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/18107 and download Midhrastic ENB.
3 - On the descriptions page of Midhrastic ENB, scroll down past the first two pictures. The first one should be some people in a room and the second should be the lone wanderer and dogmeat on top of a hill. You then get to the install instructions. Use THESE install instructions ignoring entry 0 and then follow the rest of the instructions. Use these instructions and not the ones down in the installation section as those are outdated.
4 - Once that's installed, follow my guide to replace the necessary file.
5 - Now try to launch but remember to use the Fallout Script Extender Launcher and not the one on GOG or the native one.
Try this and let me know what happens. It should work, if not I'll see what else I've got, but I wouldn't refund it. You've got the best version and as long as you meet the system specs and I assume 99% of computers do now, we will get it working.
Don't follow the steps on Midhrastic's Installation section, but follow the ones above. They're as follows with some changes by me.
Installing this is actually not that hard. All the exposition below is for when you have problems, want to tweak, or need to know what mods do or don't combine with this ENB, or how to work on performance, as ENB's can be quite power-hungry. All that aside, it's quite easy to get started:
0. Update your DirectX. Seriously do it. Especially if you're on Windows 8 as it lacks the necessary files.
1. Download the v0.118 package for the 1.0 version of Midhrastic and the v0.249 package for the 2.0 version of Midhrastic and ONLY unzip the d3d9.dll from the wrapper directory to your main Fallout 3 directory, NOTHING MORE.
2. Get my download from the download page and simply put ALL files into your fallout 3 folder. ALL. If there's a DATA directory in the release, you can install that as well (just drop it in the Fallout directory and the Data directory will merge with yours, possibly overwriting some files you have installed already). If you don't like just dropping a Data folder in your installation, zip up the contents of the Data directory in my ENB, and add that archive to your Mod Manager as a mod, and activate it there. You can easily uninstall it then. If you manually install the Data directory be sure to enable the URWLENB-002-Interiors.esp via your Mod Manager.
3. You must have HDR enabled, Water Displacement OFF, and ANY in-game anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering set to OFF, which you can all do via the game ini's if you know how or by using the game's Launcher, and entering the advanced options, there. When done setting it up, exit the Launcher, and start up the game normally (via FOMM, NMM, FOSE, or (and I advise you check it out) the fantastically versatile Mod Organizer).
4. You can also hit SHIFT+F12 while in-game to see if there's a change. If there's not, you've done it wrong. If there is, you did right.
Now make sure you read about compatibility with other mods, especially weather and lighting mods. I can't help you if you're tweaking the ini and config files, I also have no experience with Sweet FX. This is just a solution for people using an ENB to avoid crashes. If you aren't crashing at launch but you're not seeing the ENB in game that has nothing to do with this solution. This is only for people who crash to desktop when using ENB's with Windows 10. IF you can, maybe toss up your mod list and we can see if there's a conflict.
