First off, let me start by saying that this mod is brilliant - as is obviously the creator! Thank you so much for making this!
My Specs: Alienware m9700 Notebook Processor: AMD Turion 64 Mobile ML-44 (2.41 GHz) 1 MB, L2 cache. 800MHz FSB / DDR (400 MHz) RAM: 2 Gigs. Video-Card: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS (NOTEBOOK Driver 175.32) Operating System: 32bit WinXp Home Edition (SP2). Native Screen Resolution: 1440x900 (17" widescreen) (I run FO3 at 1280x800 - 16:10 AspectRatio)
I can run Fallout3 with almost full details except everytime I run into those damn dust devils in the wasteland, my system laggs, ...same with being around my.handy/gusty and gas traps. So this is damn amazing!
Now then, SOMETHING AWESOME I WANT TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE IS THIS:
I found out through many hours of intensive experimentation that if you also have a SINGLE-CORE machine like mine, then you absolutely MUST change the "FALLOUT.INI" - AS WELL AS the "FalloutPrefs.ini" files to have the same following information i'm about to give you - because conflicts between them make the game-engine choose defaults otherwise.
By default - Fallout3 comes with it's settings made for dual-core, so you have to add the following line to the top of the .ini scripts - right under where it says; "[General]"
Add this line;
iNumHWThreads=1
Then do a search for the following lines of code and make sure they are set to "0", like the following;
That's it! It sped up my framerate like a MOFO! Seriously - you MUST see this to believe it - it's as if THIS was the way they designed to game to play! Perfect framerates well over 30FPS (I usually get 45-60).
bUseRefractionShader=1 - This setting controls the shimmery/invisibility effect sometimes used in the game. Setting it to =0 can noticeably boost FPS in areas where this effect is used, such as around invisible characters (e.g. when using the Stealth Boy), or when firing weapons which give off a heat haze (e.g. missile explosions). However obviously this can also ruin realism and prevent appropriate special effects (Fallout.ini).
the main problem i have are these refraction. setting this to 0 in fallout.ini resolves most of my problems and makes my mod useless
my specs are amd 64 X2 3800+ 1,81 GHz 2,00GB ram GeForce 8600GTS
Well i can play with high quality graphics. it runs mostly smoothy but when i m looking in the direction of a gutsy thruster even if it s behind walls or doors, it lags too much. same with gas traps, or the mrhandyjets in that awesome bunker72 mod. i prefer loosing a detail that does lag the game and play in high quality than playing with medium details and being able to admire that wonderful robot exhaust fumes, right?
@ KDStudios i ll try about the fire barrels, how about the dust/sand whirlwinds in wasteland? those things do not make my pc lag that much so i havent modded them but i ll give it a try
"should"? If a game plays and at not a half bad speed then no matter how old a computer that is good right? In time to come when computers will be too powerful for even this game we will all be happy to have that "weaker computer" just so you can play an epic game of the past (Our present for now)
@Moerser Do you have any more plans to add any more of these great mini performance helpers. Personally I recommend removing the fire from the flaming barrels. In my experience on old computers while working on them, Fallout 3 really hates playing near fire. Maybe your next project should be doing that? Should be pretty simple... either replace the mesh with a normal barrel OR edit the mesh to remove the fire =D
may i ask what your PC's Specs are? im not really sure if fallout 3 should actually be played on older or weaker computers but... thats up to you i guess.

Would you also be able to remove the similar effect from a Gauss Rifle impact? If you do, I'll love you forever!
