The reason we didn't rebel was that the kind Union general decided to keep us in line by surrounding our economic center, Baltimore City, with cannons and told us that if there were any signs of violence the city would be destroyed, killing the majority of our economy. And we weren't loyal to the Union, Pugiron, we even had a Confederate militia like thing that attacked Union soldiers as they tried to move into Virginia also, politically, the wide majority of Maryland voted Democrat (at the time was like Republican is now), which was the Southern President. Anyway, good explanation StormDrummer.
I may sound a little bias, well i'm from the town John Wilks Booth was from so yeah...
well being from the town that produced the man who killed on of the greatest presidents ever doesn't sound like a good thing. besides, the confederacy was full of racist slavers anyway, i'm glad they lost
Eh, Racism went on in the northern united states for a while afterwards. Same as it did in Britain, France, and any other country with a slave trading history.
hey man, don't take me as racist, but if you look back at history the civil war WAS NOT ABOUT SLAVERY!!!!! the southern states wanted to be FREE FROM THE U.S. and rebelled...as a matter of fact, south Carolina (which was the first state to secede)sent a message to Richmond(the cap. of the confederacy) to get RID OF SLAVERY IN THE NORTH!!!this means the SOUTH wanted to get rid of slavery, and the wealthy slave owners, didn't even fight in the war, they bought there way out of it or moved up north, all the people fighting were pour farmers who wanted freedom, also, in 1863(the 3rd year of fighting) president Abe Lincon told the confederates if they surrendered that they could KEEP THEIR SLAVES and the confederates did not... there for that proves that the confederates were fighting for freedom NOT TO FLIPPIN KEEP SLAVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you probly aint reading this, so id appreciate it if yall tell him this message is here, if you want more jut tell me
THE CIVIL WAR WAS NOT ABOUT SLAVERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Acccccctuaaaally. The North was just as racist as the South at the time, they offered slave freedom if they fought in the Civil War, but they segregated them to separate regiments because alot of the Union troops refused to fight alongside them, while the South fully accepted Black Slave-Owners and everything, American history is very misrepresented when it comes to the Civil War.
The war was not about Slavery, that was just a means to rile up the North against the South, Honest Abe, just as He said, just wanted a united america, and that included either abolishing slavery or fully integrating it across the country. All the South wanted was freedom, if they had completely oblitterated the North they wouldn't have taken any states, annexed them, united the country, or anything. All they would've done is made the North acknowledge their independence and ended the war.
The North burned farms and thus families alive to win the Civil War. The South and North both killed surrendering and wounded soldiers, often by accident or uncertainty. It was a bloody war but the Confederates are not 'BAD', the Civil War is the same as the American War of Independence, a War for Freedom! And you don't see people saying America is a racist bigot country for murdering ALOT of innocent british aswell as surrendering redcoats.
Honest Abe was a great man and president, but the Confederacy was not bad, they weren't anymore racist than the Union was, the Union just used Slavery as a means to get all the free-staters behind them while reinforcing their army.
And in my opinion Jefferson was a good president too, but we can't really see how that would turn out with the Civil Wars result, really.
You are being very very assumptious, it's not like the Confederates were going out and getting slaves, they were buying them from the Portuguese and other Slave dependent countries, it was NORMAL for the time, ask any Confederate (And thus american) patriot and they'll tell you they're against slavery, most Confederates even at that time weren't for slavery, it was just their culture, tradition! It's like saying Portugal, Spain, Britain, and every other European nation are horrible racists and slavers because at one point they had slaves. It was just the times! That's so ignorant and racist in itself, you would be discriminating against Southerners, against Dixies. They are a culture all the same, and can be discriminated against just as much as a black man could be.
I harbor no hate against the Union, as a matter of fact I love the Union and I love the South. To deny the Southern flag and Nation is to deny the Union itself. And I genuinely believe that the Confederacy would've abolished slavery on its own accord just like the Europeans did. But the big picture here is that the South was devastated after the Civil War, entire families starved to death because of the lack of a economy and the scorched farms and houses. Innocent people grieved for their families, both in the military and just innocent casualties of their nation.
The Union is NOT innocent and alot of death could've been avoided if they took different approachs.
Okay, now that's done. A funfact that I find interesting beyond belief! The Cherokee were offered land (Not just reserves, which is just land noone can make money off of and want) and full citizenship if they fought for the South, and they did. Their regiments were the last fighting Southern soldiers and the last to surrender.
Please keep an open mind-- Most people try to be 'Politically correct' which can just lead to more discrimination and racism. Watch these videos, they're of modern confederate patriotism and how closed-minded most people are to it.
And I Hate Slavery! Despise it with a passion, But I don't despise nations for having it because some nations NEED it, just like some nations need state owned factories and other freedom inhibiting laws, but I don't hate the idea of THAT. Instead of looking at it from the victors side, look at the from the losers side, look at what the North did to win. Alot of southern soldiers had to desert to go save their families from Sherman! how could they do something like that? That's what the Southerners were probably thinking, at that moment they knew they had did the right thing by rebelling, that's downright appalling!
Slavery is very much still alive to this day, July 2015. People just either refuse to admit it or are too brainwashed to realise.
Economic slavery, corporate slavery, political slavery, wage slavery: they all mean basically the same thing - you can not live on this planet without paying someone for the so-called "privilege", therefore - one is forced to find 'work' to pay for their lives.
The main difference between now and then: Old-style classical slavery: The slave-owners must feed, house and clothe the slaves. Modern political slavery: The slaves are required to feed, house and clothe themselves.
The main similarity? The "elite" people in the upper echelons of human society, the ones that own and control everything (all 6 of them - about 1% of the planets human population), come to own nearly 90% of the planets wealth. While the other 99% fight over what is left.
What a pathetic species, I sure hope a killer virus knocks us all out and humans go extinct. That's just what this planet needs.
Okay...little history lesson, people. Like all border states, Maryland was divided. When the Union first began massing troops, a Northern regiment passing through Baltimore was attacked by a mob of Southern sympathizers. I don't know how many of the population favored which side...but I do know a few facts. Maryland stayed in the Union not out of loyalty, but because Lincoln needed it as a buffer state and arrested its legislature to deny them the chance to secede. I don't think "loyal" is necessarily the right word..."occupied" might be closer to the truth, although it's true that Confederate hopes that the population might rise up to support a Rebel invasion never came to pass. Anyone know more?
During the war, there was a Union prison camp at Point Lookout. Bethesda lore centers around the many Confederate graves in the area (and note that THEY added the Confederate hats...but no Union ones. Wonder why they didn't do the flag [but a modder did]...)
To this day, there's a distinct, pro-Confederate Southern culture that has never quite got over losing the war. It would be interesting to see what the attitude of the Point Lookout area population is toward the war today.
This mod is an awesome idea! I can easily imagine that in a situation like Fallout 3, someone might get the idea to try to found a neo-Confederate government, and start amassing follo...erm, troops. Kinda like the Enclave, yanno? Maybe supported by the Swamp Folk? And then someone else might start a rival Union faction...or maybe the Rebs would be opposing the Enclave itself (yikes)...and we could fight the Civil War all over again, post-apocalyptic! Yay! But they wouldn't use 19-century weapons even if they could find any. They'd modernize as much as they were able. It'd be a mixed bag, with soldiers wearing everything from overalls and tribal garb to combat armor. It's exciting to see where this idea might go!
