An overhaul of Enderal's map markers through the magic of CoMAP.

Introduction

When I first played Enderal way back in 2016, I was astonished by pretty much everything that SureAI have done to make it feel like it's own game, rather than "just" a Skyrim mod. Still, there have always been some distinct Vanilla Skyrim remnants that undermine this impression. Additional mods like armor and creature replacers can do a lot in this regard and UI patches like the awesome Horizon UI for Enderal come really close to achieve the feeling of playing a completely different game. One thing that kept bugging me however (in Enderal as well as in many new land mods for Skyrim) are the map markers, many of which just look out of place. For me, this is especially apparent with new structures like the Pyrean Ruins, which all use the same dwemer ruin marker regardless of their architectural style.

Enter Common Marker Addon Project (CoMAP). This mod single handedly fixed my issues with Skyrim's and many large mod's marker choices by greatly expanding the range of available marker designs, making new areas feel unique and interesting.

This patch is intended as another step towards a distinct game experience for Enderal, replacing most of the map markers with new, non-vanilla desings.
It includes files for the Steam and the GOG version of Enderal, as well as a bunch of patches for additional mods like Riverville Jail SE and EAM SE - Enderal Apothecarii Monastery. These patches are entirely optional and only exist to increase the overall consistency.

Installation

1. Download and install the latest version of CoMAP with a mod manager of your choice. In the installer, select the following options:
  • Core files: Select the CoMAP config pack
  • Undiscovered marker options: Choose whatever you like. Do not forget to enable the changes in the .ini file if you choose anything.
  • Addons: Select nothing for Caravan markers and nothing for Jorrvaskr. Optional: choose outlines for ruined map markers if you like them. Do not select any other options.
  • Beyond Skyrim: Do not select any of the options

2. Download and install
Enderal Map Markers.
  • Select your version of Enderal (Steam or GOG).
  • Select patches for additional Enderal mods. They only take effect if you have the corresponding mod installed, otherwise they will not do anything. Therefore I recommend to simply install all of them.
  • Make sure that Enderal Map Markers is loaded after CoMAP and overwrites its files.

Additional Notes

  • Not happy with any of my marker choices? You can easily change them in the configuration file (MapMarkers/Skyrim.json) using a simple text editor. Please refer to Jelidity's spread sheet for the names of the new markers and the Interactive Enderal Map for the location ID's you want to change.

  • In the MapMarkerFramework.ini, you can change various aspects of CoMAP, like obscured undiscovered markers (if you chose that option in the installer) and marker sizes. I recommend setting fMarkerScale=0.9 to make the map just a little less crowded.

  • The GOG version of Enderal Map Markers will only install configuration files with the marker definitions. MO2 will not recognize this as a valid mod, since it does not touch the normal game directories. However, the patch is still correctly installed if it shows that files from CoMAP are being overwritten. Right click on the mod in MO2 and select Ignore Missing Files to get rid of the notification.

  • The Steam version additionally contains an older version of CoMAP's SKSE plugin. This is necessary because the Steam version of Enderal SE is based on Skyrim 1.5.97 (commonly just called Skyrim SE, as opposed to Skyrim AE which refers to game versions 1.6x). In my tests, I have not encountered any problems with this setup (using CoMAP 4.0 as a base), however please be aware that neither I nor the author of CoMAP can give a guarantee that all features from newer CoMAP versions will work.

  • Currently, patches for the following mods are available in the installer (all entirely optional and will not break your game whether you have them installed or not):

Jelidity
for the amazing CoMAP.
The community of the SureAI Discord server for help and inspiration whenever they are needed.
And of course SureAI for their wonderful game
