Gonna be a killjoy but it kinda sucks to use AI instead of making them yourself or waiting for a talented artist to illustrate them, like yeah this is the easy solution but it leaves a sour taste in the mouth
Oh, definitely, because all the best things in life must be the hardest to achieve, right? Thank goodness we don't use washing machines or Google Maps for that matter. Let's just keep things difficult. After all, convenience is so overrated!
@Silkdroid Lol, do you also go around forums correcting other's grammar and spelling? It's a mod, not an art competition. Nothing is being sold and those rings looks like something out of Diablo 4, not ripped off some poor struggling deviant artist.
dude, spit it out. Eat something sweet. And be happy. Or just don't use the mod.
If you want to say something, say something. But all you do is saying nothing.
If you want to critique sometihng: I have one. The rings are so equal to eachother that it's still hard to differentiate them. But it's a nice improvement. And yes. the look fits.
So here's what I say. Thanks for putting in the effort. For me it's an improvement.
The alternative is either he uses "stolen" art found from google, we get ms paint icons, or the mod doesn't exist. I understand why people dislike AI art, as it hurts many artists way of making money.. But so did computers, copy machines, etc...
"leaves a sour taste in my mouth" is such an NPC statement. AI art is simply just a way to get pictures easy and more fine tuned to specific desires. For anyone who actually cares about where the art comes from, or the artist themselves, there will ALWAYS be a market for human created art. Just like there will ALWAYS be a market for human bartenders when all service positions start getting taken over by machines.
Technology will keep changing the world, every day, for the rest of our lives. Faster now with AI here. So there's no reason to get upset over advancement. Once all the deviant art kids stop crying on twitter about AI art, it'll be accepted as a modern day tool just like every other creative tool that has been invented.
This is a modding community of volunteers and amateurs using any means freely available to dismantle and wang-jangle Capcom's software to suit our own preferences. If there ever was ANY place for AI art then this is about as harmless and appropriate as it gets. This author knew how to replace the game's art with something else and had an AI tool to help him make free assets that they couldn't.
Any actual artist is more than welcome to upload manually crafted assets to add to this mod or create their own. If you want to donate to this mod author, you would be donating to them for the labour of replacing the vanilla game assets with something else, not for their artistic creativity.
Are you an artist? Would you make the new icons for the rings?
If your answer is no, then don't talk about AI being used in modding.
I'm an artist, I can drawn and rings would be an easy feat, but the time invested to understand the concept of the ring itself (what it does, how you will approach it, there would be other better ways to represent the same ring? etc), the time invested on drawning it and making them different and don't using the same 4 templates, and the time to put the last details, would cost weeks if not more than a month because there's a lot of rings in the game.
A not for profit tiny aesthetic cleanup in a mod for a game is exactly the kind of scenario where algorithmic image generation actually makes sense. It's not putting anyone out of work, stepping on the toes of artists with original work, it just a little variety added by hitting shuffle on the original designs.
There are a lot of things to criticize so-called "AI" for, being a neat little toy is not among them. You don't care about AI or art, you specifically want to be a killjoy.
Having never used AI to do things like these, I'm surprised at their capability. Which brings me to my curiosity question, which AI software did you use?
Here I was, ready to download pavelk's set of rings, but then Owrocc drops this classy set of rings... They're both so damn good! While the other rings might have more of a unique look to them, I do enjoy how these rings bring a great "Vanilla Plus" feel to them that stick closely to the original theme. Much appreciation to both of you for this tough decision.
What's funny is I hate how that mod used Dark Souls rings and just edited their saturation and brightness. Looks extremely lazy, compared to something taht could be called just as lazy with this AI assisted mod. WIld to think about.
To be fair, these ring mods might not have been made if Dragon's Dogma 2 didn't have only 5 different ring textures. You might feel like they're lazy, and that's fair, but there's definitely more effort put into these mods than Capcom made with their rings. So, I think if anything is to be called lazy, it's Capcom, not mods made for free by people using their spare time to create options.
I use a lot of generative AI images in my work, and this might be a case where he uploaded the existing image from the game and told the AI to use it a reference, so the AI based its creation on the existing attributes from the reference image. In most AI apps you can dictate to the AI how close to the reference the outcome will be. These appear really close to the originals, which is a good call, imo, but perhaps some could be a but more.... Outlandish.
I wonder if we'll see some interesting AI generated clothing textures in the future too. I have a feeling that this won't work as well since the textures are unfolded in a way that make it hard for the AI to understand the clothing's structure and create a texture that would look good on the mesh.
Yeah I get that they gave the original icon as a canvas for the AI to work within, but I was more meaning whether the prompt used for each was just feeding it the properties/description of the ring as the prompt, or if they just decided on an appearance for each ring and prompted for that instead.

But for now, This mod is better
Bruh these rings are fine and look polished
Or just don't use the mod.
