Hi, even though this mod is very small, it has a huge impact on the game, so please let me know how it affects your performance, and if you've experienced any bugs or crashes because of it and we can look into it asap!
First of all: ESSENTIAL MOD! Thank you for fixing this problem!
I would love a version that isn't as performance heavy when using engine.ini mods that far increase draw and render distance. Heliodor fields fps drop to high 30s (9700k/3080/32gbram/4k resolution for reference).
Yes...I can scale back the draw distance but the pop-in rendering of the textures on the field annoy me if they are too close. Interestingly trying r.viewdistancescale=11 or so really fills the world completely with no pop-in. I understand that I am the problem here though. I am pushing the hardware rendering all the green - but am I the minority?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep at least 60fps and grass effects of this mod while pushing draw distance and staying at 4k?
Update: I've been playing around with .ini settings and resolutions and found I couldn't achieve 60fps anywhere with the mod in this region without dropping r.viewdistancescale to 4. I'm at the campfire house first run into.
Do you still have plans to do a lower taxing version?
This mod is awesome and looks fantastic. Unfortunately, the hit to performance is too much for me to keep the mod for the time being. I am running a 2070 Super and a Ryzen 3900x with 32gb RAM. I have the 4k texture mod installed as well. From starting a new game I had almost no issues until I reached the open Heliodor Region. With the mod, while riding on horseback towards the city the fps would drop to around 50. Otherwise, it was no lower than 70 and about 80 on average. In some locations with uncapped fps I was getting 120. This was in the cave leading up the Tor. I am looking forward to seeing this mod improve and hopefully get a Lite version.
yeah heliodor is the biggest area with grass. it has the worst performance but 99% of other places seem to be near perfect. I think the best way to fix this is to maybe lower the view distance for the grass. since you can already see it spawn far away in that location id rather FPS than being able to see the grass spawn a mile away.
otherwise I understand where you are coming from but I cant live without this mod lol. the grass looks so much better.
This will significantly lower the draw distance of the grass. You'll probably notice it "popping in" here and there that way, but it will likely improve your framerates at any one time. (You might find '4' to be a happy medium?)
yeah lowering it from 5 to 4-3 pretty much mitigates all major fps drops in the largest regions. Im using 4 and go from 60FPS to 52-55 when loading heliodor region grass. but once it all loads it stay 60 pretty much.
but even before then with 5 it would stay 60 fps in almost every spot in the game except heliodor region. so 5 really isnt all that bad in my opinion unless you plan on roaming heliodor region a lot >_>
I think with the addition of this mod (alongside others like the lighting adjustments and 4k textures), the game finally looks as good as the original dq xi. You guys really made the game beautiful again. Thank you.
As for performance, I was getting big drops in areas others have mentioned (Emerald Coast, Heliodor). Like into the 30s or worse. I looked around in the engine.ini file because i didn't wanna go back to having only three blades of grass in an entire field and I found that r.ScreenPercentage was set to 150 by default. I changed it back to 100 and I'm getting much better performance now. I get momentary drops into maybe the low 50s in the same areas that were stuck in the 30 and below range. I'm not sure what that setting is supposed to do but I didn't notice any decrease in visuals after setting it to the game default. Just thought I'd throw it out there for anyone that had big drops like I did and doesn't wanna sacrifice the glorious grass.
; Allows you to increase the render resolution, as the game doesn't seem to support DSR @ 4k (for me at least)... ; THIS CAN BE VERY PERFORMANCE-HEAVY (if you run the game at very high resolutions), feel free to increase/decrease it as you like (150 is my choice) ; !!! PLEASE READ !!! ; IF YOU RUN @ 1440p or 4K, set to 100 or 125 at the most ; IF YOU RUN @ 1080p or lower, set to 150 or higher r.ScreenPercentage=150 ; game default = 100
Sounds like you probably run the game at high resolution as it is, so the benefits of superscaling are virtually nil and the performance drawbacks are considerably large. A lot of tweaks are going to depend on your hardware configuration so it can be important to read the comments to determine what's best.
Love the mod. Only problems with it are performance drops in grassy areas. (I'm in post-game and I noticed a fair amount on the Emerald Coast) and the grass itself is far too bright. I'd have it a more dull green, similar to the color of the leaves of the trees... because as it is now, the grass stands out significantly and *looks* modded in, rather than looking natural.
To note: the green color comes from the OG grass itself. I believe it was pulled straight from OG, it's not been edited or anything. It may simply be that the larger blades (from the higher-poly OG grass model) and higher density is creating more of an overall "color imbalance".
There will likely be some drop (as it is adding a lot more polys to the grass, after all), but shouldn't be large in normal circumstances.
How big was the drop in your estimation? Also: are you in Act 2?
I've tested around there in Act 1 fairly extensively and didn't notice anything particularly eggregious myself (this will all depend on specs/config, however). Haven't tested in Act 2 but i'll give it a look there soon.
Edit: Hmm, hard for me to tell much difference in general for Act 2 (when running across the whole region a few times). I think a few spots are worse than others. This might have to do with the charred spots as it seems to happen around them (only a few fps for me, however, so i'm not too sure myself). This is also noted by ShockedHearts below.
If any specific spot is particularly bad, let us know. The more specific, the better. This way we know exactly what to look for and can narrow it down.
yeah I myself tested it in Act 2 and got decent frame drops in heliodor region and dundrasil as well. but in post game it appears to be a bit better especially after the recent patch.
Edit: further playing in Post Game I have noticed significantly better frames than in Act 2 I now get almost a perfect 60fps at all times with the mod. I think the most recent update helped with that. but im more than certain it was specifically the charred spots and other effects active in those regions that were causing the frame drops (while on top of the mod) because now when I return to those regions in post game they no longer give me frame drops at all (maybe a small 1 fps drop when first loading the grass).
this is strange because the grass appears to be even more flush and nice looking in post game in comparison to act 2 so i have no idea why you would get frame drops specifically in act 2 due to this mod.
I am currently in Act 1, and I think it was dropping below 60 fps for me. It was really bad when facing towards the Ruins of Dundrasil when standing at the campsite near there.
Im using a RTX 2060 super with 16g ram. generally a decent pc. and I get very minimal fps drop post game (-5fps max). and only in the largest grassy areas. nowhere else. in Act 2 in the same areas I was getting around 20+ fps drop in specific sections of those same areas.
Downloaded and tested~ by far a 100% necessary mod for anyone playing, grassy areas look so so so much better.
so much better in fact I'd say its equal or even better than the original. definitely endorsed
In terms of frame drops. the only spot I actually get frame drops is in the heliodor region in act 2. this is probably due to the mixture of so much grass and the immense amount of animated fire, charred spots and enemies.
most of every single other place I get a smooth flawless 60fps
I have not tested the heliodor region in act 1 or post game without the destruction so I dont know if it is better or not (running a medium quality rig)
thanks, in regards to the crashing I think this mod was causing a crash specifically at the loading screen in post game when you get the sword of light after fighting jasper
I got 4 consecutive crashes in a row and fixed it by removing my pak mods. it could have also been another mod but im only using texture mods with project rebuild so It was either this one or the DQ9 music overhaul that was causing the crashes.
just wanted to let you know just in case its related. otherwise thanks again this mod makes the game look so much better
Wow I only just started this game when you added this mod and boy am I thankful! It makes such a difference and honestly makes the game a better experience for my first time around! Thank you for your work!

no more reshade, just only this mod is enough!!!!

[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.ViewDistanceScale=3
I don't seem to get any change in the view distance. Not sure what could be wrong here.
EDIT:
Found what I did online. It needed to be as follows:
[SystemSettings]
r.ViewDistanceScale=4
With the view distance at 4, I am able to keep over 60fps in Heliodor so I think it should be good now.
Thought I should mention real quick that we just put up an INI Tuning Assistant page for exactly this kind of thing

On that topic, I highly recommend Dynamic Details Reshade or Dragon Deluxe Reshade if you're inclined towards a more subdued look in general.

Dundrasil when standing at the campsite near there.
GTX 1070 and 4790K, 16Gb Ram.
Well, half the frames with the mod... We can say it affects the perf a lot
