Does this rename Pep, and if not, would it be difficult? Else I'll do it, never modded this game before though.
I would like to rename Pep, Psyche from DQ8.
    1. Hi, if you are talking about Pep Powers, yes.  I have a list of the changes to some of the Pep Powers in the change log.  That being said, this mod will not work with the Definitive Edition.

nice work, but as someone from the uk, which didn't get any official releases until puns had started and basically got no advertising on any of the games except dragon quest ix, while some enemy names from roms of the old games + fan translations look more familiar to me, it's so mix and match what looks right that i could take it or leave it.

on a semi-related note, that i'll keep posting every time i see an impressive mod until i finally see someone make it or instruct me on how to do it myself, what would bring a bit more nostalgia for me is someone finally porting the japanese hud over.

it's weird i haven't seen it done yet, seeing as it seems like a pretty quick edit, and one that actually makes it look like the other dragon quest games, rather than something completely different, but no less generic.

(also ds-style automated character pathing, but i don't see that happening)
    1. After going through all the monsters, their localization of the monsters was quite bizarre at times. I worked on the monsters (and often talked to mike9k1) and noticed that the monsters often either had better older names or their Japanese translations were better. In the US, we had monsters named as follows for Dragon Warrior (as Dragon Quest was a copyrighted DnD series): https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/List_of_enemies_in_Dragon_Quest_I

What HUD are you referring to? The all black background? https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonquestxi/mods/27

Going off of what ametalslimedrawsnear said, most of the older names are more of a direct (literal) translation, rather than a true "localization", which is what we have today. You can find some explanation on a few of the name changes here: https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonquestxi/mods/96?tab=articles

Also, if you'd be able to provide a video/screenshot of the Japanese HUD you are talking about, we'd be happy to take a look. I haven't been able to ascertain what you're referring to, offhand.

skip to around 6:48 for a text box just before the first battle to maximise examples seen in a short period of time. obviously finding the english font might be slightly less easy, but compare 'Lv 1', 'HP', 'MP' and the numbers to screenshots of battles in the western releases (e.g. https://cdn.gamer-network.net/2018/usgamer/dragon_quest_xi_engineered_05.jpg) and i think the kind of font I'm after is pretty clear, although if you can't find one that's close and also looks right, feel free to skip that part.
the level-up boxes (10:07) and the equipment (had to use another video to find, but there are plenty of character re-texture screenshots on the nexus which use the equipment screen as the background, if that helps) are apparently unchanged in the localisation, but if you could change those too to better fit the bits that were changed (i.e. scroll background gone from level up boxes with black transparent inner box, and just change a box or two to semi-transparent black on the equipment screen, assuming that doesn't break any visuals), i'd greatly appreciate that too, but again, if you get bored after the first part, or you decide any of it is difficult after all, don't worry about it and just upload the complete parts.

sorry that there's probably a bit more extra work than you signed up for, i just kind of assumed from the bits of footage i had seen, that it was a complete hud, rather than just the text boxes and font and that's it, but again, just do however much you feel like doing, the text boxes alone should be enough to shut me up for a while.

Ah, thanks for the link! We would like to add some simpler clean-UI elements like that back into the HUD.

Right now, we are trying to integrate some of the changes in Komodo's UI mod (linked by ametalslimedrawsnear), without the dependency on Special K. This means we are having to figure out how to hex-edit / inject the .dds back into the original .uexp so it can be done with the Hook method instead (same as this mod). Ultimately, that's going to lead to better performance (much lower memory use) and more consistent behavior (not having to clear / reload texture cache in SK for the UI to show up properly).

Once we are able to figure that out, it should be very possible to do the same with the other UI elements. I'm not 100% sure on the transparency effects, but we'll find out if it can be done

Not sure if you're still checking this thread by this point but we figured out proper in-game texture replacements (without having to make any other workarounds).

The latest update to the DW11 Throwback Mod includes a separate download for a 'Retro UI' which replaces the background on most dialogue and menu boxes -- although it isn't a transparent black (it's a solid black background) -- https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonquestxi/mods/96

At last. I don't give a crap about nostalgia, but I hate the dumb stuff.
    1. I added a new update with changes to some more of the silly names and pun names.
