so after testing mod extensively I have to say I really like it for most details it looks stunning, but I dont like what it does to outside walls of the city and buildings.. caves, mountains etc... it makes walls look to rough and noisy and sharp textured. is there a way to have HD details for objects/furniture/indoors/nature etc but not big walls/facades?
yes it works great. it was easy to remove and repack. I just removed those biggest outside walls/caves textures that were too rough for my taste. so best of both worlds games looks awesome!
Hey do you know where I can download the official HD dlc? I'm playing DA2 on gamepass with EA Desktop. Don't seem to see anywhere an option to find this, I've googled it etc.
Use your search engine of choice with the query "high resolution texture pack dragon age 2 bioware" and it should be one of the first hits. (I won't post a link since it may be in violation of Nexus rules.)
THANK YOU for modified HD textures without the rough outside walls! That was the only thing bugging me! it looks great in addition to official Bioware hi res update :) kudos!
make sure you are in "ext" subfolder that is for exterior.
the textures you want to delete are usually the biggest ones in ext folders, far bigger than other textures in that folder, so you can sort them by size. and they have the word "main" in their name. So for Lowtown for example that was in kirklow\ext\ subfolder, files:
Can you identify the textures which modify the portraits? Some portraits depicting people are referenced in quests, such as All That Remains and the MotA one and this mod is unfortunately replacing them with landscape pictures, causing problems.
I think I will request that. I could probably be able to do it on my end, but people should not use the new portraits because of the discrepancies caused so if you provide a download link, it will not just be for me but for many other people.
Final edit of this mod. This version is without rough outside walls in all parts of Kirkwall and in caves, AND with restored original vanilla portraits (paintings on the wall) in quest "All that remains", Hawke's mansion and "Mark of the Assassin DLC". This way the paintings will match description and the dialogue when they are mentioned. This time I made both versions.
As usual same reminders to make game look best possible, use LAA patch from description on this page for both versions of the mod, it will make your game use more ram and run better, and solve problem of missing textures. (LAA link here)
I also read rumours here that this mod is not compatible with Bioware's official hi-res texture pack. This is totally untrue you can absolutely use them both, as I always have! You get get hi texture pack here:
And make sure in your game launcher before running the game to go to "Configure", and under Video, and make sure everything is set to best possible settings and that your renderer is set to DirectX 11 (as oppose to DirectX 9), and than SAVE the setting before exiting!! Many people overlook this and leave low vanilla settings on.
First of all, thank you @MMaya! You are awesome! Kudos sent!
Secondly, I see the perms on this mod are open. Why don't you post it as a separate mod? It will be far more visible than a comment in the Posts section. Plus you have done extensive work and the two mods are substantially different now.
Thirdly, regarding the LAA patch. Doesn't it do the same job as the 4GB Patch? I am mentioning it because it's more popular and people might be already using it since several mod pages in DAO and DA2 recommend it.
LAA patch has always been linked and recommended to use with Dragon Age Origins and DA2 so this is the one I used and know it works. Can't claim anything for the other one since I haven't tried it but it looks like it does same thing. I guess everyone can try for themselves.
As for making all new mod page I don't think it's necessary it's just small edits. I might one day, it's a lot of work you than need to make screenshots and do it properly, can't be bothered now lol :) but for now those who requested it and care enough to check back have the links here.
This game is still looking good in 2024, it's a good old game . Apart the fact that it is missing some vegetation only in some forest areas, this game is looks mostly good in 2024 too . That castle-city looks like a Castle from Prince of Persia actually . I think this HD mod looks nice in the foret areas only . How can you make this mod to change only and only the forest areas ? I don't want anything changed in that castle-city areas . How can I make it work only and only for the forest ? I want to apply this Ultra HD Textures Mod only and only for the forest reas of the game .
Because textures for outside walls and floors are not done good they are over sharpened. I edited the mod so that it removes those but keeps everything else. here are the links.
Late, but I hope you know that you're dedication to having fun and to make the game look as beautiful as possible is still very appreciated. Thanks after all these years!!!!!!
it's the rough outside walls of buildings and floors that look grainy... I removed those in my edit since OP is gone. check the very big thread with many replies comments bellow. we had discussion on it there and near the bottom I posted links for edited version that removes those rough outside walls but leave all other HD textures. This mods covers a lot including inside texture furniture lot of clutter it improved etc that look great. only those walls are a problem :) if you like it leave comment in that thread to bump it back on top :)
@LadyLiddell I am sorry I am only answering this now (for some reason I am not getting notifications properly here any more) and it's probably not relevant to you any more but no.. you don't need original mod, you only need my file. it's the same thing but with an edit.
I cant remove the grain on original mod for outside walls/floors. this is why I removed them. it's grainy because OP over-sharpened it, I can't unsharp it. But they are really not necessary. If you have official hi res pack, they already look good enough. the the edited file I posted covers everything else.
You are a live saver!! Thank you very much for the description how to use this LAA. After I read your description, I realized, that I have done it already right "XD - But I'm still a beginner with modding. Most times I have no clue ^^"
I'll sure enjoy your mod! Thank you for making this one. It's a way other game experience as on the old ps3 version. I already have seen that in my modded Origins. (But there was another LAA I used - don't know if I had to do it again "XD)
Edit: Now as I played a bit, some Textures in the houses of Hightown are missing. I hope can fix this also, as with this "glittering" walls in lowtown. Looks funny, but I was happy that this is no more.
Seems nice but there is a lot of textures missing for some reason, mainly barels, sitting furniture, tables ... in some areas that is, like Hangman or the Viscount castle or hows called. Maybe it conflicts with the official HD texture pack? Its not like those textures are not applied on certain objects, they are completely missing.
If textures are not loading for you guys you HAVE TO to use 4gb laa patch from description.
For both versions of the mod. I know author said that only 4k version needs it and HD version doesn't, but the truth is they both need it. Depending on our PC and how many other mods you have the game is just not optimized right to load all modded textures properly without the patch. works great for me no missing textures.

and keep everything else and repack it. would that work?
I just removed those biggest outside walls/caves textures that were too rough for my taste. so best of both worlds games looks awesome!
use 4BG patch just to make sure your game runs smoothly! (even if you use normal version!)
and If you still want to make exterior walls I removed to look little better install Bioware's official HiRes texture pack.
old official bioware links are dead but you can get official hi res pack here. I got I there and it works fine.

I thank you as well for the ready package, saves some work. :)

size. and they have the word "main" in their name.
So for Lowtown for example that was in kirklow\ext\ subfolder, files:
til_lowtown_main_d.dds
til_lowtown_main_drelief.dds
til_lowtown_main_n.dds
make sure you delete all those files with that same name there are always 2 or 3 of them.
Can you identify the textures which modify the portraits? Some portraits depicting people are referenced in quests, such as All That Remains and the MotA one and this mod is unfortunately replacing them with landscape pictures, causing problems.
art\levels\races\ferelden\props\_textures
files to delete are all with "portrait" in name, so:
prp_portrait_d.dds
prp_portrait_n.dds
prp_portrait_sa.dds
prp_portraitc_d.dds
prp_portraitc_n.dds
prp_portraitc_sa.dds
prp_portraits_d.dds
prp_portraits_n.dds
prp_portraits_sa.dds
prp_portraitsb_d.dds
prp_portraitsb_n.dds
prp_portraitsb_sa.dds
As for editing the mod myself for portraits as well, I don't have time now, maybe next weekend if someone asks for it.
I think I will request that. I could probably be able to do it on my end, but people should not use the new portraits because of the discrepancies caused so if you provide a download link, it will not just be for me but for many other people.
