Hey guys, I found your mods and this thread as I wanted the same thing -- a mage that can jump in the fray with melee. Great work you've done and it led me to try to work on the solution myself. What do you think of this:

Arcane Staff Warrior - DA2 by Roman Mithman

My approach consists of a new simple melee attack skill in the Arcane Spell tree which, when activated, closes in with a melee staff attack. Subsequent attacks are melee since the mage is in melee range. This permits the mage to continue using ranged attacks by default and when he wants to breach the distance, he initiates by just hitting that melee skill. You keep all spell casting animations, ranged animations and melee animations. It's also cool to see the mage hit with melee and then immediately turn around and throw a ranged attack at the foe hitting him in the back with arrows. Skills like Stun and Mighty Blow and Maker's Kick add to the fun.

Now if only we could work in cool jumping animations like Evade and the Two-handed sword Mighty Blow ... but I think that's impossible right now ...

I see a possibility for a Monk-type class with this!
    Oh, the potential!

I read most the posts, so Forgive me if this has been mentioned...

There another mod that allows the player to use the staff as a 2handed sword, and not just a melee weapons. Which basically means that they're basic attacks could hit more than one person.

There were 2 major problems with this guys mod:

One, it requires like 19 steps to install, and a console command for a specific item... which I could NEVER get to work.

and the second problem was, you lose ALL spell cast animations...

Now, obviously you've solved that first problem, amazing well... and it's AWESOME, you get the cool impact from be in melee range, and it allows the mages closer AoE skills to full animate and really shine the way they're suppose to...

My things is, it just used the animations from the Staffs own melee profile... which yes I understand why, all you essentially did was remove they ranged attacks...

But, I was just curious, is it possible to either:

A: Allow the melee staff to act as a 2-handed sword just a bit? being able to hit multiple targets with each hit, but NOT lost the badass casting effects?

or B: (and I'd actually prefer this method), still keep the melee-staff animations as they are now, but have them show the GRAPHICS from the range staff auto-attacks instead. So basically you'd have to be in melee range, but every attack would be like putting a fireball directly in the guys, rather than just whacking him in the face with a stick and the final attack in the combo would be those cool -BANG- attacks the staff has (like when you use a spirit staff from long range, and the last attack it's of an ETHEREAL FIST coming up from the ground to uppercut the mob... that's badass...

It's just the melee staff is GREAT, I LOVE melee-centered AoE mages, and that is EXACTLY what you've brought us... which is just freaking awesome and I sincerely salute you for it. but the Mages range attacks themselves had a kinda acrobatic style that ended in a big -OOMPH- effect. Is there anyway to allow the cool ranged animations while still being at melee range?

Or is that just beyond the scope of the project?

    Either way, top job

this mod is really great, and it does exactly as you say it does. I really do want to use it (and maybe I will, regardless) but I do wish it only affected Hawke, or was somehow restricted to only certain staves. it's hard for me to justify changing every other mage in the game just because I want to be a melee mage, and even then doing so sort of takes the novelty out of making a melee mage unique, but that's just me. thank you, either way, because I do really enjoy messing around with it!

If you could make this a unique item, so all other staffs acted as they did in vanilla, and only the mod created staff was melee ranged, then i could really get behind something like this. Of course you would need to make it as two separate mod packages, a two hander as well as a one handed version... If all that can be done.

also a version that kept all the lighting effects that the ranged staff had would be cool too, just for extra shiny attacks mind you.

perhaps a sword that used the staff animation, as well as the staff's mesh. To bad there is no toolset out yet, or this would be easy.
I hear that you can import weapons from Dragons Age Origins. If so then it might be easier to make this as a DAO weapon using that toolset, then import it to DA2.

Just my initial thoughts on this project, I really don't know to much about this, I'm not modder, just a dreamer.

    @Gawdzila
that is basically what i am trying to achieve here.
the problem is that the talent/spell animation is tied to the type of weapon being used, not with the class of Hawke.
the only work around i can find at the moment, like Gambit suggested, is weapon swapping (via Xatmos mod), one weapon (staff type) for spell casting and the second weapon (2H/1H type) for warrior talents.

but still i'm looking for any possibility that would eliminate the need for weapon swap.

I'm glad someone is playing around with this stuff.
I was curious... do you think that it would be possible to make it so that the staff works as normal, but is used like a 2H weapon if executing Warrior talents?

I was curious about doing some tree-swapping to make a fighter/mage hybrid, but the animations for the Warrior skills just don't look right if you do it with a staff.

i have enabled spear throwing on one of my normal attacks but it didn't do any damage.
it has different animation than the qunari too.
but at least, for now, i have proven that my idea is possible.
just have to find a spear throwing like movement somewhere at abi_base.
    will keep on testing.
the file will be uploaded when "spear-skill" is usable.
