To give the Asala some merit (because by the time you get it, you don't want it) I use this mod

which gives every companion a more useful starting item that you can carry with you for longer (there's one for origin items too, but it requires tweaking to work in a new game). The sword models are the same so this mod would still work, and you won't be have to make something up via the Winter Forge just to have a useful Asala.
